@dcon Then don't pull them all down ... Unless you codebase is 20+ GB it takes minutes to pull it all down (I used to work on a 10GB+ and I could pull down the deltas in less than a minute when connected via a VPN that then connected to local version of Team Services.).

For example, the Windows codebase has over 3.5 million files and is over 270 GB in size.
Well, it is git. So that means you get every branch and change since the beginning of time.
False. You can clone just one branch if you want.

Doesn't mean I want every branch in existence.
It won't be too big a problem unless they've got lots of binary files in there. Binary files (especially ones that change quite a bit and aren't teeny weeny like the occasional icon) really suck since they typically don't compress well.

MS loves
LinuxGitWe love Git. But our repo is pretty much a poster child of what Git cannot handle. Ergo, instead of looking at different options or just inventing one ourselves since we're fucking Microsoft, we'll hack the filesystem so that we can keep using Git.
Chris'sake, Microsoft, I know you're trying to be hip and cool with the kids these days, but come on.

Or using the solution they already have (TFS)
-
@Maciejasjmj While it's certainly silly that they don't use their own TFVC, they're hardly the first to hack up an existing source control system. Facebook did it before them for Mercurial, likely because Mercurial was easier to modify and yet keep multi-platform support.

Granite makes what is essentially a database of textures. No that can't be generated (for some reason). Yes, we're checking in a multi-gigabyte files into source control.
I weep a little every time I remember that.

Yeah, if it were possible not to have to do that, I'd take it in a heartbeat.

@PJH Typical racist media promoting the view that men have penises.

On January 13, Johnny Depp sued his former business managers, charging The Management Group and two of its attorneys with mishandling funds and collecting almost $30 million in unearned fees. On January 31, the defendants fired back with a cross-complaint, saying those allegations are “absurd and untrue,” and that the only one to blame for Johnny Depp’s current financial situation is Johnny Depp. In fact, TMG alleges it did “everything possible to protect Depp from his own irresponsible and profligate spending,” and provides many examples including Depp’s decision to spend “over $3 million to blast from a specially-made cannon the ashes of author Hunter Thompson over Aspen, Colorado.”
-
@bb36e I like how the article focuses on the massively important fact that ashes were fired out of a cannon, and ignore the irrevelant story about possible massive financial corruption.

José Manuel Coelho, this highly respectable member of parliament... ⇓
...has been sentenced to one year's imprisonment for the crime of "aggravated defamation".
The sentence is to be served in 72 periods of imprisonment, between 36 to 48 hours each, possibly on weekends. He has decided to seek political asylum in the Principality of Ilhéu da Pontinha.
Never heard of Ilhéu da Pontinha? Well, neither have I before today.
Do you know the island of Madeira, where the eponymous wine comes from? It looks like this (notice the scale in the bottom right corner):
Incidently, Madeira is where José Coelho was born and lives.
That red pin on the map? Why, that's the "Principality of Pontinha"! Here's a closer zoom on the map:
(link on Maps)Here's a photo of its whole territory:
I'd link to the principality's website, but its bandwidth limit has been exceed. So here's its Wikipedia page instead.
But the bottom line is: this 174 m2 rock was sold back in 1903 by the king to a wine-making family in exchange for some money to help build the port of Madeira.Fast forward about a century to 2000 and it was bought by an art teacher, who in 2007 redeclared independence (still under analysis by the UN)
Prince Renato II "The Just", owner and ruler of Ilhéu da Pontinha. ⇑
Ilhéu is the first nation to introduce Bitcoin as its official currency, btw.
Hmm, now that José Coelho has acquired Pontinhense nationality...
...their population must have increased by 20%!

This country desperately needs to patriate a hairdresser.
-
I forgot to mention: it seems Coelho is only spending his weekends in exile.
And another bit of trivia: Prince Renato has acquired solar panels shortly after seceding, after the Madeira council threatened to cut off the electricity.

My father had a Saab estate in the 1970s that had some rear-facing seats. Hated them.

Soon, this will be common knowledge. "A tesla loads passengers through the trunk". It will be a common sight, and people will ignore it.
And then I can start kidnapping people using a Tesla. It'll be a bit of an investment, but when you're an artist, you use the best tools.
