Another wise investment by Mozilla

I'll just leave this here.

Markdown + email = 504 OK?
-
well at least ReadTheDocs is a good choice. :-D
-
Some good stuff on that list. Too bad it's muddled by that forum software.

Time to email the people at Mozilla a well-documented overview of Jeff's behavior! Who wants to pitch in?
-
**Bro**: $200,000. Bro is network monitoring software, which is at the heart of Mozilla’s intrusion detection system for our network. Their award will be used to build the Comprehensive Bro Archive Network, a public repository of modules and plugins for Bro.
"Bro"? Are you kidding me?
How could they give almost a quarter of a million dollars to a project with such an obviously problematic name?
Calling a software product "Bro" is the equivalent of a "No Girls Allowed" sign and Mozilla supporting it is like them saying that women are nothing more than sex objects[1] for privileged white men.
[1] - I was going to use profanity here, but didn't want to exclude anyone with sensitive ears. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
-
You should watch out when you say things like that. Big Bro is always watching.
-
Does that mean that Firefox on Android might finally be supported?
-
Clearly they haven't heard of:
-
That is an entirely different matter.
Brotli is named after a Swiss pastry called "Brötli", but Google being the American idiots they are, of course got rid of the Umlaut..brö
would have been a much better extension..bro
is just wrong..br
is an acceptable compromise, because it doesn't contain Umlaut-theft.
-
-
Do you even intrude bro?
-
There's obvious problems though with a file extension half the world doesn't know how to type.

Complain all you want, Discourse only crashes in forums with users. My instance is working perfectly fine.
OTOH, it's kind of too resource-consuming when it doesn't have users
-
Why are we not talking about the first project on that list?
Buildbot: $15,000. Buildbot is a continuous build and integration system which has been immensely valuable to Mozilla over the past few years. Their award will be used to remove the term “slave” from all documentation, APIs and tests, and also to make improvements so Buildbot works better in the Amazon EC2 cloud.
to remove the term “slave” from all documentation, APIs and tests
Is that really how we spend our efforts and money?
-
Honestly, I want to invest in the company that can sell CtrlH for $15k.
-
Fuck, even after reading about Apple doing the same thing this still looks like a joke.
At least they didn't make it seem like a huge project.
-
In this day and age, the consumers care if a company uses slave work
-
Google being the American idiots they are, of course got rid of the Umlaut.
What's the alternative? To keep it and be guilty of cultural appropriation?

cultural appropriation
Go away.

to remove the term “slave” from all documentation, APIs and tests
I mean, almost everyone on the list has the stupidest focus.
Mercurial gets $75000 - an amount that would buy you at least 10 man-months of coders - just to have "better support for
blame
" and "improve the Web UI"? FFS, you could write your own VCS for that kind of money!ReadTheDocs - $48000 to move some functionality from the desktop to the web. CodeMirror - $20,000 to fix RTL languages. I mean hell, when I get this kind of requirements, ususally all I get is "a week to do it", not "20 thousand dollars".
Is that some kind of money laundering scheme? Hell, it makes sense too...
-
At least they didn't make it seem like a huge project.
I think they were really burying the lede.
...and also to make improvements so Buildbot works better in the Amazon EC2 cloud.
Which is something that seems useful and not a trivial search and replace. Honestly, the most difficult thing will be on deciding what words to use instead of master/slave, I'm sure. Or maybe they included that as an intentional bikeshed to keep the PHBs from getting the way of the useful stuff.
-
And, of course, the most pressing issue in Discourse is "make email a first-class interaction mechanism for Discourse, allowing Discourse instances to replace and improve upon mailing lists". Not, I don't know... something that actually makes sense for a fucking forum software?
-
IIRC there was some tool on fail.d asking for exactly that.
-

Do you really want Mozilla writing a VCS? You've seen the kind of shit they've done to web browsers.
-
Except for all the countries and regions that still allow slavery?
But talk about fucking overkill political correctness.
-
Isn't a mailing list just a bunch of people doing reply-all? How does adding Discourse into that help anyone with anything?
Also, what happens when you send an email to Discourse and it 504 OKs a DiscoToaster about resources you can't view because your email is too similar to the one it failed to do anything with on the first try?
-
I mean hell, when I get this kind of requirements, ususally all I get is "a week to do it", not "20 thousand dollars".
Now you know how your employer makes HIS/HER money
-
Not to mention it's a pretty stupid and unprofessional name to boot.
-
<onyx_> so, you set up Discourse and a mail server. Hook a script into the mail server to check if an account matching the email exists in Discourse already <onyx_> if not, create a new one, set its long name to the "From" field in the email, and post the body of the email as a new topic <onyx_> otherwise, find a topic started by that user and reply to it <onyx_> also, set Discourse to always notify all users through email, and set up the mailer to show your email address instead of the standard noreply one
There, solved it for them (IRC logs)
Granted that was "use Discourse as webmail", but all you do is change the last step.
-
Where does Mozilla get the kind of money to piss away on stuff like this? Spending money on Discourse is like spending money on a Land Rover. Sure, it is flashy and will do some cool things. But it will also overheat all the time and has dodgy electrics and systems. Not something a NFP should be pissing money away on.
-

Do you really think that @wood is the type to say " Yeah, we can do that" without first considering whether or not he should do it? Of course not.

Yeah, you can't accuse him of that, but his filter requires some serious re-calibration.
-
Is that really how we spend our efforts and money?
Better question: what kind of douche put it there in the first place? Unless the project was founded in 1968.
Do you want to use software written by someone that ignorant of societal norms?
-
I have no idea. I'm no business analyst but giving away one million dollars doesn't seem like a wise choice for an organization with no stable source of income.
Maybe someone up high has seen that Firefox is hopeless and is trying to make the money go to a better cause.
-
I guess I should rip out that IDE controller from my one ancient workstation that still uses an ATAPI CD drive before the Racist Inquisition finds me.
Ooh, perhaps I can get Mozilla to send me $20k to upgrade my workstation to a more politically-correct one that doesn't have those pesky racist IDE controllers with Master/Slave devices!

writes older and younger on slips of paper and tapes them whenever it says Master or Slave on the devices, then sets a password on the BIOS
Done. Where's my $20k?

older and younger
I'm sure they'll find something wrong with this terminology as well.
-
Ageism. That's why the suggested terminology is "Leader" and "Follower". But that doesn't work with ATA, so let's go with "Host", "High-Priority Parasite", "Secondary-Priority Parasite".
-
btw. Mozilla, if you hadn't figured it out yet, giving out large sums of money to other projects while at the same time begging for money is an extremely dumb idea.
This shows up if you try to go download Firefox from Mozilla's site:

Where do I sign up to get thousands of dollars for spending 30 minutes with a search-and-replace macro that anybody could write as a part of a Freshman homework assignment?
