and Discourse goes out of its way to put as little on the screen as possible
Yes Jeff, often it put nothing on the screen except the white background.

Also King Jeff™ linked this...
The first time it loads a blank page. Yeah, definitely goes out of its way to put as little on the screen as possible.

Watch a 5 minute usability test of meta.discourse.org conducted by a real person looking at the app for the first time.
I was thinking of doing that back in the "let's convince Alex not to use Discourse" days by sitting Heather down in front of wtdtw, telling her "create an account, log in, make a post" then filming her while she did. Maybe also ask questions like "what does that number mean? What would you expect it to mean?"
But then I realized I didn't want to get divorced / dissolved in lye in the tub in the back yard.

Also, why does that button have ellipsis? All human interface guidelines documents that I've read (Windows, Apple and Android) state that ellipsis should only be used on controls that have a follow-up action.
For example, clicking "Browse..." in a file upload control opens a picker, "Print..." opens the print settings dialog (before sending the document to a printer) while "Close" does not have ellipsis appended to it because it's an immediate action.
The button on the previous screenshot immediately loads the post (although it does a roundtrip to the server) and there is no second action which has to be taken. However, the new way of dismissing unread posts and topics should have ellipsis, but doesn't.

How difficult can it be to support a non-standard port?
-
-
@AlexMedia
Also, yay for software design that makes it very easy for your users to inadvertently expose major credentials while they're asking for help on support forums (NOT that Discourse is alone in that regard - it's a pretty common anti-pattern in OSS)!
-
@AlexMedia said in How can this be so wrong??? (AKA the Discopocalypse thread):
How difficult can it be to support a non-standard port?
It's UNPOSSIBLE.
It's a special type of broken that you only get with Discourse too. The forum works, some images work, and the avatar CDN works, but non-default avatars do not.
-
Maybe ASP.NET has spoiled me, I'm used to
Server.MapPath
andUrl.Action
to do all the heavy lifting for me whenever I need to generate a URL.Things can get a bit more finicky when you need to generate a URL from outside of the web application (e.g. a scheduled task) but it shouldn't be impossible to support custom ports or folders.
-
@AlexMedia said in How can this be so wrong??? (AKA the Discopocalypse thread):
but it shouldn't be impossible to support custom ports or folders.
It's not unless you're a Discodev.
The thing is, they seem to actually think this is OK. It's not like "oops we didn't think about that, leave it with us and we'll sort it" - they think "oh we don't support that sorry NOT SORRY" is acceptable.

For almost a year now, we’ve been doing something that’s considered quite risky for an open source project: Paying contributors.
Le gasp! You mean, you'd consider sharing some of the money you get from selling a product with the people who contribute to it? How revolutionary! Next you'll be offering them paid vacation days!

@Yamikuronue Civilised employment.

It is quality that Discourse distinguishes from other systems, and it is quality that attracts attention.
This guy got it right! Everything else has more quality.
-
@AlexMedia
Vis-a-vis the custom folder/port... they barely even support changing the DNS name of a deployed Discourse site. It's a 4 step process in Discourse (plus the DNS changes), and it requires a mix of GUI and CLI commands and a FULL REBAKE of the entire site.And it's only 4 steps because one of the steps is "Go read all these other how-to guides for the changes you have to make for each Social Media SSO provider settings, independently". And, of course, His High Holiness gave you such a specific pointer to where you can find those guides:
Fix social logins
Your Twitter, Facebook, Google, Yahoo, GitHub social logins will all need to be edited to reflect the new domain name too. Refer to the respective guides in the howto category here.
Depending on how you logged in, you may need to do this first or you won't be able to log in once the name is changed.
(Yes, that's an exact quote. I did not alter it in any way. Also, note the little "gotcha" -- depending on how you log in, you might need to do this step first -- buried at the end of this step, step 3, so about 3/4 of the way through the post, right in the blind spot / dead zone.)

Most SSO really requires you to change it in your account settings, there is no getting away with this.

What's really funny is that this isn't even what they're doing. They got an OSS funding grant, which gave them extra cashflow, which they then chose to spend on freelance work. That they chose to target people already working on Discourse only makes sense, but they're not awarding bounties for PRs or anything like that — they find a piece of work they don't/can't do, pick someone from their contributor pool that they think can do it, and offer them a (negotiable) contract.

Do you like Discourse? Do you like mandatory tutorials? Now you can have a mandatory tutorial in your Discourse, complete with locking you out of features by a modal overlay apparently.
https://meta.discourse.org/t/discourse-narrative-bot/52132
Plenty of gems here.
Second, it is in fact a primary goal of Discourse to teach people some simple formatting.
I thought it was to let them communicate with each other?
Hey, here's me trying to make something bold using the toolbar as you helpfully suggested. Beyond accurately selecting text on a touch device, which is already a difficult task in and of itself, plus the fact that I had to manually expand the toolbar to see it at all, I can't even see the damn toolbar because the act of selecting text near the top of the editor automatically obscures whatever is above that selection thanks to the native OS selection menus on both Android and iPhone!
This looks like a user complaining about Discourse's retarded and obviously untested button placement, but it's actually @codinghorror justifying why they don't teach people to use the toolbar. It's useless because we made sure it is!
-

I guess they have to do something so people can actually use MarkUpUpDownDownLeftRightLeftRightABStart properly.

Except that it was a form of bribery, which doesn't look so pleasing in an end-of-year report for that OSS funding.

And so WTDWTF's tenure on the "Please Visit Our Discourse Forum" list ends. Or at least gets shunted into a hidden list of deprecated links, it's still crawlable there as of this point...

Just not the way they are intended to be used, but she seems to have fun.

I love how the default explanation on that list is "no longer works", which gives the impression that Discurse no longer works on those forums, as opposed the link being what no longer works.
