@Carnage
(1) Brake and veer a little left because you're concerned the space in front of you is about to be subject to a violation of the laws of physics
(2) Your left side tires veer onto the rumble strip or the stone shoulder and your car's handling gets funkier. Especially with a stone shoulder, a lot of those will effectively "grab" your car and cause it to at least feel like it's steering even more heavily into the ditch
(3) React reflexively and whip the steering wheel back to the right
(4) Repeat oversteering reactions until you lose enough control that the car starts sliding toward its inexorable doom
(5) ???
(6) Your insurance company will PROFIT! for many many upcoming premium paymentsYes, the actual physics is pretty clear to me, but the lack of driver skill is harder to fathom, for me. Though I have been driving 4 wheel vehicles since I was 6 so I may be a tad different perhaps...

Idiots gotta idiot. At least in this case the consequences of the idiocy were actually visited on the idiot, which makes it mainly funny.

I'm pretty sure the person being tailgated can get in serious legal trouble over something like that too.

I saw a cat cross the road.
I brake for all animals, even humans

Seen today:
- Average speed of traffic? 70+ mph
- Speed limit? 65 mph
- Random dude in a pickup truck's speed? between 50 and 55 mph. Why? No clue.

Cell phone. It's always a cell phone.

@dcon Must be a pretty big one if to slow down the truck that much

With the battery fully charged

I was just driving down a 100 km/h section where everybody goes at least 105. Suddenly some idiot in front notices a mobile speed camera (which have to be signposted here) and jumps on the brakes so hard, he's down to 40, nearly causing a massive pile up...
-
@Deadfast Common response. People will slam the brakes when noticing a traffic camera, even if they are close enough they would have been snapped by now if they weren't going below the speed limit in the first place.

Especially when they were already going below the speed limit. Retards.

@loopback0 That's what I said.

It's like they're trying to make up for all the speeding they've ever done!
I imagine that for the same reason it must suck to be a cop. I'm sure driving behind people doing at least 10 under all day must be quite frustrating.

I wonder whether the two could be in any way related...

Tssss. Some guys will break hard when they see the non-mobile toll enforcement cameras on German roads (though toll is for trucks only). Be careful near such places!

Would that be in a zone with speed limit? Or without?

Or Iowegians.
Around here, the interstate speed limit is 75 MPH, but you always get a cluster of folks with Iowa license plates in every lane going 40 and there's no route past them...

But what if he doesn't have acorncow pusher on the front?
-
@izzion Just install a proper horn then

@Tsaukpaetra "If you ever feel stressed out, remember that china has a highway 50 lanes wide that merges into 4"
That looks like a toll plaza, where it's common to have more lanes than in the main highway. Which isn't to say the statement is incorrect. Just that it doesn't obviously apply to the picture.

@PleegWat said in Driving Anti-Patterns - Necro Edition:

Sometimes, but need not be. Anyway, when the limit is 100 km/h and that guy is doing 90 km/h, breaking strongly is very useful...
Some people seem to think that when they were caught doing 50 km/h less than the maximum limit, they'll get a bonus when overspeeding next time.

Today I was driving behind an older VW Passat (B6 I think). It started signalling to change lanes, and then the turn signals... basically they started alternating. Instead of only the left turn signal blinking, it started alternating between the left and right side turn signal, like hazard lights except retarded - left-right-left-right. I actually laughed out loud, I've never seen that before.
-
@blek said in Driving Anti-Patterns - Necro Edition:

WARNINGWARNING!!! I have no clue where I'm going so you better get out of the way when I decide 10 feet before the exit to change my mind!
-
@blek said in Driving Anti-Patterns - Necro Edition:

This happens because the driver manually flipped the turn signal off and overshot it, hitting the other side and triggering the mandatory-three-blinks on the other side. But it usually doesn't trigger both sides continuously like that...
-
@Tsaukpaetra No, if that was what happened the car would signal one way and then the other - but the signal switched direction a bunch of times. If it was the driver's fault and not an electrical problem, the only explanation I can think of is the most epic case of Parkinson's ever.

@JBert speaking of idjits ramming overhangs with heavy vehicles:
https://youtu.be/ZcFrCnsfTZQ
This is a bus trying to enter a tunnel in Stockholm, the tunnel is too low for the buses, and they are not supposed to go that way at all. Despite this an idiot bus driver rams a bus in there every few years causing traffic deadlocks so they put a massive bar the height of the tunnel in front of it.
And the buses are using gas as fuel, the gas sits in a hump on the roof of the bus. Ramming gas canisters with flammable gas into a metal bar is apparently not a good idea.
The bus was empty apart from the driver, and the driver was not seriously injured.
-
@Carnage Not sure that this counts as an explosion, though. Looks to me like the pressure container ruptured and then the gas "merely" caught fire - I mean, the fireball was impressive but an explosion should have definitely caused more damage.
-
@Rhywden It's a Hollywood-esque fireball, that's good enough for non- discussion to call an explosion.
-
@Rhywden It's a 'Hollywood' explosion. Lots of fire, little damage.

@Carnage It's apparently a big problem here with highway tunnels, particularly older ones which aren't quite at the modern height. They tend to use a series of alerts, in some cases including video screens showing an actual image of the overheight truck, culminating in a moving bar:
I've read incident frequencies to the tune of 100 closures per month for some tunnels.
