I want to play through some old games. Like the Syphon Filter series, Metal Gear Solid, Mega Man, etc.

@RaceProUK I think at the time of
PocketPCWin CE 5.0, that handhold was using a low powered x86 variant. Just that because of hardware limitation (the strange computation model where the storage and the memory are the same thing), you can't just run any x86 programs on it. (It can run .NET v1.x GUI program without problem because the hardware difference have been catered, though)

Well, unless you're trying to emulate a 64-bit x86_64-based system. Then

status: Thinking about elegance and terseness, and how they intersect but are not equivalent. Came up with the new word obterse to mean things that are terse but instead of being elegant are instead obtuse or obscure.

The really big problems were twofold:
- Mobile devices needed to be enormously more power-efficient. (It's improved a lot now, but we're talking many years ago.)
- The interaction metaphors for a handheld device are totally different to those for a desktop/laptop. The latter work really well with keyboard and mouse, but primarily-touch-based systems have different natural use patterns; Apple effectively did the world a favour here by saying “no, we aren't going to be like what went before” (and a lot of developers at that point went “D'oh!” for not having spotted that obvious thing before).
MS were amazingly slow to realise the second point — the first wasn't nearly so important, given that hardly any users actually write machine code and apps really need to be reconsidered when ported because of the second point — and so got quite thoroughly thrashed by Android.
Also, playing catch-up isn't all that easy for MS because it's been noted for a while that the mobile device market is really only large enough to support two major platforms (currently iOS and Android) because of the network effects. MS can't break in because the users and devs mostly aren't there; the devs aren't interested because the income isn't there because the users aren't there, and the users aren't there because the apps aren't there because the devs aren't there. Vicious circle.

Status: Needed to do a re-release of a very old tag that had one minor update applied. This old tag is structured in ways that isn't compatible with the way my Jenkins server is currently configured, and it takes many hours to run through the build scripts. So I checked it all out on my workstation and set things to run overnight.
Only to come in this morning and find that Windows Updates rebooted my PC sometime during the middle of the build.

oh. seen on Slack this morning:
You know, I always wondered why santa had 8 reindeer and one fox pulling his sleigh.... I mean I could make sense of it if the fox was in the lead, but she isn't That's where Rudolph is. Instead she's right column 2nd from the front, which makes no sense whatsoever. that arrangement would cause the sleigh to pull rather hard to the right, and would be bloody dangerous for the fox.

Why are you wearing shorts in -18°F temps ?
More seriously, it's currently only -11°C (12.2°F) in Montreal, -16°C (3.2°F) with the wind chill.
See, is not that cold

You had that. It was called the global air currents. Then America invented cars.

Status: Drove through a blizzard to get to work only to find that while I was in the car everyone was urged to stay home and the meeting I was trying to make got cancelled. So I'm in the middle of trying to figure out how to configure istanbul with babel because everything has to be transpiled these days, that's the new keyword, the code you write should bear as little resemblance to the code that executes as possible, when I find out I've accidentally missed another credit card payment (it was due two days ago, because months are hard).

I was told (by multiple people) that Windows Update auto-reboot was not an issue, it was a god-sent feature.
I was skeptical. Maybe I was right.

Status: Just overheard someone spell an email address while (loudly) talking on the phone. Out of curiosity, because I thought that it had to be misspelled, I googled the domain part of the address as I heard it. It's apparently spelled correctly, and it's the website of a local bankruptcy lawyer's office.
Okay then, I guess I didn't want to know after all...

Status: Got my new VanMoof bicycle today. Due to the high number of bike thefts in my city, the idea of having a GPS receiver / locator fixed inside the frame was kind of the deal maker - which enables them to make you the following offer:
If your bike gets stolen you can tell them to track down the bike (entails a fee, though). The company then cooperates with the police to find your bike (they strongly advise you not to go off on your own). And if they don't find the bike within 2 weeks you get a new one.
You can also unlock / lock the bike either through a key fob or a mobile app. While the key fob works very reliably, the app still needs some work. But considering how fast their turnaround time is when answering questions (and providing working solutions), I'm optimistic.
They also have a 30-days-no-questions-asked return policy in case things don't work out.
