@Tsaukpaetra $75 and you know a million people would buy it, too.

And that WinMo5 trip predates the modern smartphone. No touch, no wifi.
There were Winmo5 phones with touchscreens and wifi.

@lucas1 Nexus is the definition of "not a custom rom".

Sure it is! You're paying for the data connection.

Fi is butt terrible here.
Come to my office and try to make a call with AT&T. If you're not touching a window, you won't have signal.

Thanks for ripping that scab off--we poor Sprint G3 users didn't get Marshmallow, even though Sprint said we were going to.
TMobile G3 users got it. At least according to my wife's phone.

@abarker said in Apple's newest iPhone, 2016:

I think everyone but us poor Sprint users did. But I need to stick with Sprint, or live without a cell phone in my office (or lean against a window if I want to use the phone, or go out into the building lobby, etc.)
I like Fi so far, I just need to put YouTube Red on my son's phone so I can see if we can cut his data usage down to a reasonable amount.

moto 260 v2.
other than the bands being too expensive by half to replace i'm quite pleased with it. it actually has me wearing a watch again!
Hey I've got one too!

@accalia Fi is butt terrible here. Because Sprint and Tmo are both butt terrible.
fi uses at&t, tmibile, and uscellular (lte towers only)
and yeah if their coverage is butt then there's not much fi can do for that.... but then none of the other carriers are going to do all that well. Fi does do integrated, seamless VOIP.... so if you have no service but do have wifi it will work as if you had service.
Sprint too.

do they use sprint as well... well. good. that's anywhere but southern maine covered for me then.

@FrostCat I had one with a touchscreen (no wifi, though).
Hers was not, more on the old blackberry model of a physical keyboard and small screen.
You gotta remember - before the iPhone, all-touch was widely considered a bad idea. Because it still is a fucking bad idea.

(Really, though, do you think AT&T would do something new like work with Google? Come on now :P )

For only $50 you can charge your phone and listen to music at the same time!
-
@coldandtired Ooh, it's a dock, seen from the back. I had to check Apple's website to see WTF that was.
Wait a minute... is the phone held just by the connector?

I'm surprised they aren't using magnets as their magnetic power connectors on their laptops are actually reasonable ideas (and I can just tell everyone else is waiting for that particular patent to expireβ¦)
-
@sloosecannon Yeah, strictly bush league carriers for Fi.
I mean, if there's ever a compatible dual sim phone worth owning.

So, I've had iPhone since gen 1, and now I'm looking to jump ship.
What I'm hearing is, if I buy an Android I shouldn't buy it from my carrier (at&t) or it will never get an OS upgrade ever. Is that about right?
-
@error dunno. Up here I got my Nexus from WIND and I think it just gets the updates direct from Google.
-
@error If you give a fuck about timely updates, you'll either be applying them yourself or buying a Nexus. If you buy a Nexus, it doesn't matter where you get it from.
If you care about updates in general, any flagship phone should be fine for about 3 years.
-
@Magus Except that's not the point of the post. The post didn't mean to say, "Everything should be wireless," the post was saying "Apple is trying to reinvent bluetooth."

It depends on your carrier and what brand of phone. I have never had a problem geting upgrades for an LG through T-Mobile. HTC, on the other hand, not so lucky.
-
@abarker said in Apple's newest iPhone, 2016:

It depends firstly on the manufacturer, since they need to do a build for the hardware you've got (to get the drivers right, which is a little bit important). Where the hardware is relatively closely associated with a contract (US carriers) they may choose to do their own builds instead. I've not done phones like that for yearsβ¦

LG V20
Seems to be a pretty nice phone, I've considered V10 for quite a while.
If only it were a bit bigger, my previous phone also was 5.7'' and for a while I had to use 4.7'' iPhone which for me felt uncomfortably tiny.

Yes, it had Pong.

@error said in Apple's newest iPhone, 2016:

Bit of an exaggeration, although you're probably less likely to get one if you don't get a flagship.
I had an HTC Inspire/Desire HD, Galaxy S3, and Galaxy Note II on AT&T and all three got at least one update each.

not exactly never.
see with iphone there is only one source of updates: Apple, so when apple gives update you get it.
with android Google releases their AOSP updates, which get applied to all AOSP capable phones ()assuming they're still in service period, they eventually stop issuing updates for old phones)
then the device manufacturers take the AOSP update and apply their phone specific patches and software (if they want to.... they don't always if there's a new shiny) and gives that to the carriers. At this level fan mod firmware like cyanogen mod (which often backports AOSP changes to phones that aren't updated as part of AOSP anymore) works, to bring updates to phones that wouldn't normally get updates.
then the carriers might or might not take the manufacturer's updates, apply their own skins to them, pay to have them certified, and release the update.
so, unless you get a phone capable of AOSP, or you root and flash custom firmware (such as cyanogenmod) updates are.... not likely to be a thing for you for long in android land.
good news though, you can always unlock, root, and flash a new firmware, just be sure to back up the original firmware, so you can go back to it if you accidentally softbrick your phone. ;-)
-
@accalia said in Apple's newest iPhone, 2016:

Nope. That depends on manufacturer too. Lots of VZN (and AT&T?) phones have locked bootloaders.

yes, but then a lot of locked boot loaders these days are just software locked, and aside from blowing a diode that prevents them from being relocked and irrevokably voiding your warranty, unlocking the latest generation of phones is usually pretty damn easy, even if the carrier said you couldn't do that. (just don't expoect sympathy or help if things go wrong.)

Ehhhhhh, I think it very much depends. Usually those require root, which requires privilege escalation, which isn't easy in recent Android versions due to selinux and stuff. Then you need a way to hack your way into the bootloader itself, which usually requires some really low level work. It's probably possible, but finding that exploit is a real pain.

!E: Literally PCM, but instead of playing sound, it just shows you the actual binaries on the screen (so you have to imagine the sounds it makes in your head).
