90s called. They say to make your peace because the world ending in year 2000 sounds real good if CDMA survives past it otherwise.

Oh trust me, it's still alive and well. That's still a favorite of VZN and Sprint.
-
@Magus Maybe mine, then. Or maybe it's mixing Polish (where there is a word 'i').
When they first introduced it it was wonderful, but either my fingers are getting fatter or it's stopped recognising my swyping like it used to :(

That's probably exactly what's happening
-
@coldandtired They've definitely changed the system majorly twice, and it has trouble if your words are too weird (so, frequently for me) - but in most cases it does a good job imo.

Plotting, are you?

Again, many developers are taking the position now that you only need to test on a galaxy and a nexus, and anything else that works is a bonus. Because that makes more sense than testing thousands of different phones.
And while you would never buy one of the lesser brands, they sell really well.Well, that and because it will actually work.
Unless you get a $30 phone with Gingerbread in 2016. In which case, I can't really help you.
That actually sounds like a great deal! A phone and a gingerbread for 30 bucks? Count me in!
-
@aliceif said in Apple's newest iPhone, 2016:
Wait, Z play != Z without play in such a major way?
WTF MOTOROLA!!
I thought "play" was just something like "Google Play Edition" which I remember existing in the pastAre phone manufacturers on a quest to find the most confusing naming schemes? Because that's what it seems.
Whatever happened to
[companyname] [productseries] [number or year] [plus/lite]
?
-
There's also a Moto Z Force, which sounds like a Power Ranger
-
Oh, , I just came across this:
-
-
WtfCorp Leila, who has always been an iPhone adherent (aside from disastrous forays into WinMo5 and Winphone7) is now Android shopping.
And that WinMo5 trip predates the modern smartphone. No touch, no wifi.
-
The really fucking dumb thing is they could have saved it with a charging passthrough.

Nexus, Nexus, Nexus. Welcome to the dark side.
-
@sloosecannon No.
You forget that the whole point of nexus is that is for nerds. Nobody slightly normal is going to load some custom rom or whaever.
-
@Weng It's okay. They get to argue with the EU and Switzerland next year all over again about it.
-
@lucas1 said in Apple's newest iPhone, 2016:

Not at all.
It's for people who don't want crappy interface (I'm looking at you, TouchWizz), no pre-installed 3rd party app that you can't remove (ex.: NextIssue) and get timely updates to the OS.Nobody slightly normal is going to load some custom rom or whaever.
Of course they wont. And they don't have to.
The fact that a Nexus device is perfect for nerds who want to tinker with it doesn't preclude it from being used by normal people.
-
@lucas1 Yep. Probably an S7. Maybe an S7 Active.
-
@lucas1 I haven't even rooted mine and it seems ok. My 50+ father who's used to his old S4 didn't take long to adjust either.
But switching to android from iPhone is obv going to take a little learning
-

Ergh.
But Samsung though
-
@sloosecannon It's not a bad place to start.
Slick, shiny, well supported in the accessory market. If that new LG has a water resistance rating, it's also in the comparison.

Eh, I mean, kinda, but Samsung software is terrible. The LG (V20?) does look pretty good though.

LG G- series then. Or, if you prefer something a little bigger, the V- series.
-
@Bulb I think Apple's SoC processor W1 is a customized ARM processor, so they do have custom chip.
just not be used on your iPhone
-
@sloosecannon said in Apple's newest iPhone, 2016:

It looks great, but I really don't want their (I assume) crappy proprietary shit. I want plain Android.
The hardware with an officially supported plain ROM would be nice.

these days it may be easier to find a cheap smart phone than a flip phone
Even without 3rd-party apps, the cheapo smartphones with ancient Android still do have web browser for when you need to look up when the next train goes and maps for when you find yourself somewhere you might not know it twice a year. Which is about how much "apps" most people have use for.

too much equipment on the old bat belt weighing him down.
either that or those aren't actual muscles on that suit, just a armor layer that looks like muscles and disguises the flab below.

@accalia
Plus the drag of 2 meter long cape. Too much even for Batman.

They tried to push one on me when I got a new phone. (No, I don't wear watches. Ok, how about a free tablet with a monthly connect charge. Um, that's not free.)

other than the bands being too expensive by half to replace i'm quite pleased with it. it actually has me wearing a watch again!

I think even Verizon, the most evil of all, can activate unlocked phones.
Kinda. If they support vzn's LTE and CDMA bands. And if you have an already-activated SIM. And if the IMEI is on the whitelist.
In other words, as far as I'm concerned, it's not worth the hassle.

yeah. these days..... just go with Project Fi if it's available for you, which if you're in the US and not in one midwestern state that has some weird laws or something..... you will be.
nexus phone, no contract (other than pay off the phone if you don't pay outright) 20$ for call and text, $10/GB data, refunds at a penny a meg for everything you don't use in a month.....
-
@accalia Where did you lose over a quarter of your watch?
Or was that some kind of special Pac-Man edition?
-
@aliceif said in Apple's newest iPhone, 2016:
@accalia Where did you lose over a quarter of your watch?
i only had enough to buy 260 degrees fo the watch. so they cut that chunk out of it.
-
@accalia Fi is butt terrible here. Because Sprint and Tmo are both butt terrible.
-
@Weng said in Apple's newest iPhone, 2016:

fi uses at&t, tmibile, and uscellular (lte towers only)
and yeah if their coverage is butt then there's not much fi can do for that.... but then none of the other carriers are going to do all that well. Fi does do integrated, seamless VOIP.... so if you have no service but do have wifi it will work as if you had service.

Thanks for ripping that scab off--we poor Sprint G3 users didn't get Marshmallow, even though Sprint said we were going to.
