That's just a new way to lose, so that should be fun.
Knowing enough to say that suggests a deeper knowledge of All Things Dwarf Fortress-Related than you probably wanted to give the impression of having.
-
It's still very definitely in the Alpha/Early Access mode.
I'm down on EA games at this point. I played a ton of Starbound after it became available, got bored with it, and now that they're almost ready to release, and have just dropped some major combat changes and been adding a lot of features, I just don't have enough enthusiasm to go back in.

Windows 10's update system rebooted without asking right after several days of me ignoring it.
FTFY.
-
I never got any kind of notification prior.
So..you also never went to the lock screen?
-
I thought I had turned it off and this is the first time it's happened to me. It probably turns itself back on after a while.
Assuming you have 10 Pro you can stop all that with a local GPO: Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Windows Update
I did this when I installed 10 and I haven't had any reboot issues with it refusing to follow my policy yet.

Man, you must have some crappy drivers. When I was in college I had a Geo Metro and I never had that kind of problem. Damn car felt like it was on rails even in snow and mild ice.

If you can find a spot on your timesheet's calendar for that day, sure.
That joke would work on virtually anyone else on the forum...

Said PC was turned off for several days while I was out of town. So in an odd pedantic way I guess I was ignoring it.
So..you also never went to the lock screen?
Nope. My home PC is either turned off or I'm using it. I live alone so there's no reason to lock it or even password-protect it.

Finally saw Star Wars VII. Now I can stop avoiding spoilers, and read some of the discussion threads.

Status: Milestone 2 has been achieved making a bot!
Current capabilities of Tk-TwitchChatBot:- Can connect (somewhat blindly) to an IRC server and join a channel, and send/receive chat messages in said channel (Milestone 1)
- Can take input as some sort of expression, parse it, and spit back the results, all without screwing with the prior state of the engine (Milestone 2)
Next step: Modularize it!
-
Status: You know how sometimes with really old TVs the v-sync or h-sync would get messed up? That happens when people resize the Dwarf Fortress window while it's recording.
I just spent two and a half hours writing a tool and fixing a Dwarf Fortress recording.

That change that went live last week, we're going to need it changed back.
The one you all signed off?
Yes, that's the one.
Why? Is there a problem?
No, we just don't like it.

If anyone speaks Spanish to a decent level and is willing to help me translate a couple of lines of an email please can you DM me. Google translate is letting me down on one or two sublteties. Thanks.

I had this happen once, in my first contracting job. After several months, I delivered the product, and they decided they wanted a total rewrite. Ok, guys, it's your money.

**Status:**strong text The IRS announced yesterday that the filing deadline for the 1094/1095-B and -C has been extended by 2 months. I was pretty sure they were going to do that--as the client who emailed me about it gleefully said, "looks like they're beginning to realize just how bad the timeline was.

Anybody got a hint what got moved and where it got moved to? 'Cause Dicksores is being even less helpful than usual in finding it.

I know; learn LINQ for Christ sake!
Fuck, the LINQ statements to implement those filters would be shorter than the FUNCTION NAMES you've come up with.
-
Judging by the source on his link, DF requires 32bit binaries that aren't that usual to have installed these days, it makes sense to use docker so you don't have to install them, and not have to worry about different incompatible linux-based operating systems.
Is that correct, @ben_lubar?
Also this:
Because why would I want to install a forum without Docker again.
-
learn LINQ for Christ sake!
Duh, who do you take me for, some Java 7 savage?
The functions themselves use LINQ, but do a bit more than a GroupBy (and differ a bit in logic).
-
Then why aren't they returning
IEnumerable
?Learn LINQ GUD.
-

Yeah, 64-bit support is coming soon™ and Dwarf Fortress needs like 50 different GUI libraries even though it never calls any functions in any of them in PRINT_MODE:TEXT. I thought about making a stub library that implemented all of the functions with no-ops, but :effort:.

Man, this is why stay away as much as I can from the database or anything closely related. Big data, data analysis, DBA; all of those end up doing this sort of shit.
Me? Give me an endpoint and I'll download your stupid JSON and make it pretty with three.js

Status: when will I learn? Stupid BASH and its inability to work with anything more complex than
x=1
Just imagine all the hate JavaScript would get if you had to:
if( 'string' === x )... if( 1 -eq x )...
And you think Python is stupid with its tabbing? BASH is even stupidier because of:
x = 0 # this will fail x =0 # this will fail x= 0 # this will fail x=0 # this works
I know I'm TRWTF for even trying.

Status: Got chided for not turning in my PTO data in time for payroll. Like I'm some kind of huge jerk.
So I looked back in my email. There was exactly ONE reminder, on December 9th. Not to mention the PTO shared calendar for me is perfectly up-to-date. So, you know what? Fuck them. I'm not going to feel bad about this.
-
Then why aren't they returning
IEnumerable

Ask the DevExpress devs why they only let you bind to a
List<T>
.

Status: Last night around 10PM I rebooted a client's server and then went to bed. I was planning on coming back to it today. I just signed in to the primary server that I had opened the RDP session to the box I rebooted and the RDP session was still open with the shutdown still occurring. Time to send an email.
"Yeah, the server that hosts your LOB application may reboot at some point today. I have no idea if or when...and if it doesn't I will need someone to hard reboot it at the end of the day please. I could explain why, but it is a long story and I am not even sure I can make it make sense."
Now, time to make damned certain that we have a recent backup, just in case.
-
That doesn't mean you have to RETURN a
List<T>
from your functions. That just means you have to.ToList()
your enumerables as needed.

Status: was having a bad day. Then I finished the task I scoped out 2 days for in like 2 hours. Turns out a previous dev had already done all the foundation stuff I assumed I'd need to do... huh. Most of the 2 hours was just writing the test cases.
Now I'm torn whether to put in the PR now and look like an amazingly productive person or sit on it and slack off.
BTW: if you run a business? This is why stuff like chiding people for missing the PTO submission reminder that didn't exist is a bad idea. Because then those people get spiteful and sit on work on purpose. Or maybe that's just me. But still.

Nah, it's not.
There's too many levels of seemingly pointless management between me and the people running the company for any of them to realise that stuff though - not sure if that's the case where you work.
-
Status: Realized today how I can realize my configuration pipeline simplifications and dynamically determine from within the process if the static configuration has been changed, even though the dynamic configuration manager (which would perform that detection) requires the static configuration to initialize.
The solution really should have been obvious: Split the dynamic config module in two.I'm kinda annoyed though; I'd successfully not thought about the problem during my first week off and now it probably won't leave me alone during the second.

I'm down on EA games at this point.
It depends on the game/devs. I'm on the Early Access for Grim Dawn, and that's been fun as they introduce new content and functionality. It was a bit frustrating at first, and the initial art was rather dull in many ways, but now they've got quite a lot of content and it is looking much better. Still not sure whether it is better to play in a tank-y sort of way or go full DPS-squishy…
But most games I'm content to wait for release and the first post-release reviews before spending.
-
Now I'm torn whether to put in the PR now and look like an amazingly productive person or sit on it and slack off.
I hate when I finish things early and they start giving me useless busy work, because they hate not squeezing all the 44h/week they pay me for, so they have to find me something to do.
-
Today I dreamed there were penguins in my street. There was also a lion but it only wanted to play. Then suddenly I felt really tired and I woke up. Not sure why I feel tired even in dreams.
-
I love it when that happens. "All that work we told you to do? Pointless. Undo it."
-
Well, as long as they're honest about it... better than making some excuse up about how it's totally your fault somehow.
