Mathjax seems to the package of choice.
Didn't we try that on Discourse and discover it was full of holes?
The markdown-ish syntax for mathjax is
$blah$
. When we turned on the mathjax plugin, every post that had a$
in it was suddenly broken. The plugin is unsupported, and no one was going to go back and escape every dollar sign in every Discourse post, so the plugin was removed with prejudice.Yeah, I remember that which is why I asked about latex generally and specifically instead of MathJax specifically and the forum generally.

The default math delimiters are
$$...$$
and\[...\]
for displayed mathematics, and\(...\)
for in-line mathematics. Note in particular that the$...$
in-line delimiters are not used by default. That is because dollar signs appear too often in non-mathematical settings, which could cause some text to be treated as mathematics unexpectedly. For example, with single-dollar delimiters, ”... the cost is $2.50 for the first one, and $2.00 for each additional one ...” would cause the phrase “2.50 for the first one, and” to be treated as mathematics since it falls between dollar signs. For this reason, if you want to use single-dollars for in-line math mode, you must enable that explicitly in your configuration:So I guess the one was .

I realized I was going to have to clarify on this shortly after I posted it but for once I didn't post-edit it into a mess. By not sacrificing function, I don't mean that Apple had more functionality than its competition, but I mean that they did seem to make damn sure that the functionality they did have worked properly.
"You're holding it wrong."

@tsaukpaetra There is that, and it even occurred to me to say 'why not both?', but I figured I'd leave that to someone else to say.
However, I think I'll be a dick and wait to see if someone else can explain it.

With the state of education we have today, I wonder how long it took somebody to realize it was giving wrong answers?
I decided to try this out on the one iOS device I own: my iPad. And spending a few moments of swiping back and forth with a face I concluded that the iPad comes without a Calculator app. Either that and I'm tr for not finding it. But searching for apps turned up nothing installed on my device.
Seriously, who the fuck ships a general-purpose computer made for everyday use without a calculator preinstalled? That's like standard on all of them!
-
@atazhaia I thought "there's no way that's true" but apparently it really doesn't come with a calculator app pre-installed.

I had the same reaction when I found that Android apparently lacks a built-in text-entry app.

This. Nor a built-in file manager app.

@tsaukpaetra you have a browser, right? There's probably a ton of calculator webpages available!

Isn't Keep the default note taking app? Or did I install that myself?

It's not a system App on my device...

That one quite often yields a "Server 503" for me (even if you click on the "Try another server"). From what I've been able to tell, someone there was a moron and did some stupid stuff with cookies/sessions/localstorage because if you clear the cache then it magically works again.
For a while, at least.
