I just noticed "dildo" is on the list.
Seriously? Is this a swearword list, or "Little Timmy innocence protection" list?

It turns into a "Little Timmy innocence corruption" list if he accidentally uses the word "password" or "classic".

@Sumireko said in How can this be so wrong??? (AKA the Discopocalypse thread):
7zip licences should permit it to be distributed with Discourse, as long as it's attributed or whatever (to my understanding).
After 10 seconds of searching the web I found the de facto Ruby zip library and its license, which is the same as Ruby itself.
Why depend on an external program?

Also, we should fix that message. It's very bad UX.
Yep, I agree. It's terrible UX to unexpectedly have a huge list of curse words tossed at you for no discernible reason.
At the very least, something like .split("|").sort.join(", ").
...fuck me.
I'd love to poke fun and ridicule the Discourse team about that, but... It's impossible. It's literally impossible to come up with something more outlandishly stupid than what actually happened. You can't do a "what's next" quip when they've already done the next.
Is that how it's going to work? Make it impossible to mock Discourse by preemptively committing every conceivable mockery themselves?

How did that ever get into the release branch in the first place? Don't they do code reviews, peer reviews, or even just a quick chat over the (virtual) watercooler? I can see how the feature itself came to fruition ("Hey guys... shouldn't we do X?") but this is by far the most stupid way possible to implement it.
It's a new low, even for them.
It would be amusing if someone tries this on one of their client's forums, and then files a complaint with <company> because they are offended by the forums software swearing at them.

Btw, aren't these forum-specific? And how did they miss that mistake given all the stress testing we gave that feature with Belgium/elgiu?

@Dreikin
I'm sure that in Discourse 1.9, they'll add the banned words CDN to offset performance impacts of trying to filter words without exposing the whole list to everyone who types a classic story about the bloody results of running with the bulls.

- They made any changes based on any testing
- They didn't instantly regress or break any changes they did do

Makes me wonder though.
Wasn't the word filtering thing implemented half-assedly initially because a customer wanted it but Atwood himself didn't really consider it necessary?

That's just one of the many reasons why this kind of list is absolutely stupid:
- it never catches all variations of a single word (nigger is not OK but niggers is OK, buttuming they fix the "non-whole words" thing, but you could imagine other simple ways/typos to work around any other regexp);
- it only catches the swear words and slurs that the writers thought of (nigger is not OK but spic, chink etc. are OK);
- it is always biased towards the beliefs of the coders ("God"-based swearwords are not OK but anything based on "Allah" would be OK);
- it reflects the prudish view of some parts of society (poor Timmy shouldn't know the slightest thing about anything related to reproduction systems, but talking about disembowelment or other atrocities is fine);
- and, perhaps worse, it gives the developer the false idea that the problem is handled by a technical solution when, despite all claims from , it's not been proven that a technical framework will ever succeed in making (or even helping to make) discussions more civil...

? I'm not sure you can include the|

And the typo part is hilarious also, because people that tend to swear a lot also usually don't write very well and do a lot of typos, while people that write very well usually tend to use precise words for precise reasons. So a filter like this will prevent a well-mannered person from using one banned word in a non-offensive context (e.g. "How can I determine the sex of my chickens?") while a ranting lunatic serial-offender will be able to pass all its hate without even noticing the filter because of the typos (e.g. "fuk u all niigers faggs").

Well for now at least they're not putting well-known names on the list:
Marc Rotenberg, director of the Electronic Privacy Information Center, a Washington public-interest group, pointed out a recent CompuServe dilemma.
The service restricted the use of proper names out of concern for libel or slander. That left coin traders unable to offer such things as Roosevelt dimes. The word Roosevelt was removed.
"It's impossible to please everyone," he said.
