Life Hack: How to clean the lining and surface of Ugg boots and slippers
Whether you're tackling boots or slippers, here are some useful tips to keep your Uggs in top shape

Does anyone here know gRPC / protobuf?
I'm passing large-ish chunks of data between my own client and server and have implemented streaming because the overall dataset to pass is larger than the max message size (default is 4 MB, I know I could increase that but probably not to the point where it would cover all my use cases, so streaming it is in any case).
The issue I have is how to find out what size of messages to send in my streaming implementation?
Searching the interwebz I can find tons of discussions on how to set the maximum message size when starting the server, but this is not what I want. What I want is querying an existing server to find out what is that maximum size. Either my google-fu is weak, or nobody ever discusses that?
Currently I need this in two places and in one I've hard-coded a 4 MB (minus a small margin for headers etc.) limit. In the other one I've been smarter and implemented a horrible hack where I parse the string from the error message (!!!) to read the maximum size.

Me pranking a streamer who was playing viewer levels. The best part is how long it takes him to catch on:

(Ignore the weird voice-overs. That was other people in Chat messing around with a TTS addon.)
You watch DGR too?
I didn't realize the "Mason" was you.
Yes I do. And if you watch him on Twitch, it shouldn't be particularly difficult to guess who I am there...

Yeah, noticed it too. That's because I am back in the English
translation of this forum. [:)] Now I have to type it in manually,
which I can still do if it humors you... [:P]
Oh, no, it's unlikely you'll be able to communicate through usb from
J2ME; it's very much tied down. It's allowed access Bluetooth on some
phones, tho.
I've given up on Thunderbird as a usable rss agregator. If you're on
windows look for sharpreader, which does a decent job, and as an added
bonus, carries the burden of the .NET framework with it. :)

So, first, they don't allow you to put the database elsewhere. Then
they don't let you tell IIS not to allow it to be downloaded (I assume
IIS has a .htaccess equivalent).
I must say I was slighly amazed (not to say nauseated) when I first
discovered there was such a thing as an Access-based website. I'm more
used to MySQL, PostGres and, occasionally, Oracle(yuk).
Hmm, They should at least have a separate area for data, using a
symlink, or possibly splitting your home directory up into 2 sides:
/data and /www ... Probably the latter, since it's windows, But then
configuring IIS would be more difficult on their side, they would have
to add a web for each user, instead of adding a user/password to the
ftp server, and dumping a directory in some /users folder.. Either that
or <gasp> setting up SQL Server and creating the user's own
personal database. Its simple to do, and could be automated.
Any website I've done that requires a database has been MySQL or SQL Server.

And your site is...? Or are you shy? :)
@sas said:In the upper-right corner of Firefox, there is a circle of gray dots

Seems to only report updates for plugins, though - I'm running 1.0.2.
and I see no mention of the firefox update, just a couple of extension.

Really, if the intro won't put visitors off, the navigation will... if you can find it...
There's navigation?!!

The problem with a CVS conversion tool compared with an XML convertion
tool is in general the various interpretations of the CVS format. Some
people don't use comma's but semi-colons or perhaps even tab
characters. Then of course there's the use of single quotes, double
quotes and in some cases no quotes at all. And of course supporting
different record types in a single CVS file does make it look pretty
complicated.
Just assume you need to export a list of today's orders from one
application and import it in another. You'll have customers with
master-detail links to the articles they have ordered. So one customer
could have ordered a dozen or so articles. Doing this in CVS means that
whatever convertion tool is going to convert it, it needs to know how
to see the difference between an customer or an article or else you
have a cheese sandwich that ordered an 'Alex Papadimoulis' or something silly like that. :-)
With XML you have at least these master-detail layers in your exported data.
Of course, the whole import/export thing also depends on the mapping
tool that you use to transform the export file from application A to an
import format for application B. In general, those convertions aren't
too difficult either. Often just a matter of changing field names,
maybe concatenating fields or providing default values for missing
fields. This process is called mapping and is one of the things my dad
earns his cash with. [:)] He creates custom mapping tools for specific
customers who are using those file formats like CVS and EDI, and quite
a few other custom formats too. But for XML there's some very easy
mapping tool where you just create a mapping algorithm by drawing lines
between the fields of both import and output format, and in-between you
can also define some special actions that need to be done in the
convertion. Once you've set this up correctly, the system can even
create C++ sourcecode so you can compile the mapper to an executable
for your favorite platform and use it. Haven't seen such a tool yet for
CVS files.
Which is a good thing, though. My dad earns quite well with these
custom mapping tools he writes. For him, they're often very simple to
create yet he can charge quite a bit for writing those tools for his
customers. [;)] And they'll happily pay him too.
So, now I think about it... Yeah, darned XML! Everyone, go back to
using CVS or EDI or whatever other format you like! My dad needs a new
car again. [:D]

Not Katja, the person I quoted. Sheesh, whats with you and the Katja hangup anyway?
That's true, I didn't mention which one I was referring to, did I? Oops...
I was referring to the format where each topic's first post in this forum is a blog entry on the main page.
It depends on how MSSQL interprets this statement but NOT IN can be slow. Look into not exists for another option.
NOT EXISTS (SELECT iuserid FROM ftdb_groupusers WHERE igroupid = #form.group# AND iuserid = a.iforumid)
Anothe approach (one that is less readable IMO) is to do an outer join on the 'not' table and add a and field is null on a column from the table you don't want.
What is better depends on the DB and the relative size of the tables and whether fields are indexed. You should consult your DBA if you really need help.
Also, be careful building SQL as you have below. I'm not sure about the syntax, but if somone can get form.fourm to evaluate to something like:
1 AND 1 = 1
They can change the structure of your SQL and get it to return things you did not want. Generally it's best to use prepared statements.
Java, of course. Should have known that. Why people still use that crappy language is still a miracle for me... [:P]
And revoking programmers licenses?... If they keep this up like this,
soon they will have lost all the above-average customers and all who
are left are users who are to dumb to understand what kind of c**p this
is...
Could be a unicode issue. As you don tknow what the fuck is going on inside VB it could very well be using unicode strings?
Anyway afaik unicode \0 is twice as wide as a char \0.
If you read the thread, you can see exactly how this happened:
from:
midi files on web pages and how it indicates porn sites (which I
disagree with - to me it says "I'm looking at a site hosted on
GeoCities written by a 10 year old!")
to:
midi files compared to other ways of storing/presenting music
to:
how crappy midi sounds in general
to:
when midi doesn't sound crappy by using soft synths (but uses lots of CPU)
I apologize that noone went in the "porn" direction you were hoping for. Better luck next time.
Hope this helps clear things up. [:D]
RE: "Unless of course you're looking for the record named " '; EXEC 'DROP DATABASE ' + @@CURRENT; --".
Fair enough, but that would only work on specific DBs. Not all define @@CURRENT, or have the same meaning for it.
Not to mention the error you get when you run this script in IE 5+.
<FONT face="Courier New"><HTML> <HEAD> <TITLE>Error</TITLE> </HEAD> <BODY> <TABLE id="tblError"></TABLE> <SCRIPT language="javascript"> document.getElementById("tblError").innerHTML = "This will cause an error."; </SCRIPT> </BODY></HTML></FONT>
Very helpful.

I've used straight dial-up from 1996-2004. And I've had DSL since 2005.
You could say that I've used dial-up since 1992, but that was a different era, which I do not want to confuse with the today's modern ISP age.
Is "Tuicken" a typo, or some joke I just don't get? If it's a
typo, it's a damned good one, since the Q and T have three keys between
them (unless the poster uses a Dvorak keyboard, which I'm not familiar
with.)
That's a good question, and I see no reason why anyone would tell you to piss off for asking it...
My emotions usually range between amusement and amazement, sometimes
accompanied by gratefulness that I don't have to work with such code
(usually - since joining this forum I haven't come across any, despite
intensive efforts to dig one up to submit.)
I suppose some part of me is angry that people who write such code actually get hired, taking jobs away from the "rest of us".
While I'm confident in my abilities, and feel that I'm a fairly
advanced programmer, I know there are many who would blow me right out
of the water. My self-image is decent enough that I don't feel
superior most of the time. There is often little context
regarding the submissions, so it's hard to gauge the circumstances
under which the WTFs occurred. To rightfully feel superior,
you would need to have a complete understanding of the context, IMHO.
And sure, a small part is depressed about the rampant idiocy in the
world (both job-related and not), but usually only for very brief
periods of time.

Found this in an retail till system programmed in VB, controlling whether or not the

outsourcing:

On Error Resume Next
If UCase$(pblnH5000) = "FALSE" Or UCase$(pblnH5000) = "TRUE" Then

End If
