It's also impossible to program an uninstaller that would check if user has alternate browser installed and prevent uninstallation if they don't
Ever heard of the shared component registry? It was actually made for this exact situation (that being, uninstalling an application checks the shared component dependency list and, if it finds that such a dependency to longer has any, prompts to uninstall that shared component as well. It's not widely used anymore, but it's still fully functional in Windows 10!)

@El_Heffe The only magic incantation you need is microsoft-edge:, which is registered in the app manifest, same as every other Metro-style application. But kudos for finding a more circuitous way to invoke the launch contract.

the one that comes with a license for the office applications?

@Luhmann Shit, Bill Gates ain't even in charge anymore!

Also did you know that DOCX, XSLX, etc. are open standards?
BWAHAHAHA. Yeah, sure.
That would be really funny if it wasn’t so sad.

And the average user will find that fact documented . . . where exactly? Which is why if you search for "How do I create a shortcut to Edge", the method I posted is the one you are most likely to find.
While your method does work, not being able to launch Edge simply by clicking on
edge.exe
is First Degree Retarded Fuckery.Especially stupid considering that when I launch Edge, my firewall tells me that it is
edge.exe
which is trying to connect to the internet.Microsoft must have a lot of old ex-IBM people working for them because they seem to like doing things in the most non-obvious way possible.

Remember, 640K is enough for anyone!
-
@dcon Well since "there is a world market for maybe five computers" and "there is no reason anyone would want a computer in their home", it's easy to ask those 5 big businesses about their actual needs.
(attributed to an IBM chief and to DEC's founder, respectively)

"there is no reason anyone would want a computer in their home"
And in 2019 we've gone too far in the other direction. "There is no reason anyone wouldn't want a computer and Internet connection in their toothbrushes, paper cups, light bulbs, and kitchen faucets!"

I did used to remove or disable the Caps Lock key, because there is no legitimate reason for that key to exist at all.
I still disable it. Easy to do under KDE with a nice GUI.
Windows has a GUI for it too, it's called registry editor

The entire point of the TOS is that it's a legal document that you agree to. I'm pretty sure no court in the world would uphold a TOS whose content you never had access to.
Where I live, you have to show me and make me accept the contract BEFORE you sell me the product.
That TOS has no leg to stand on

all laptops and workstations we buy must have Win 10 Pro base license even if we are going to install Linux on them
Why?

Microsoft said so when we signed software assurance agreement

@mott555 The Internet is a weird place. While searching for that image, I discovered that the Star Wars wiki has an article on breasts...

I am not a Lunix user and I agree. The capslock key has no reason to exist.

@TimeBandit Microsoft is a global corporation, the company I work for is small in comparison. They get to dictate the terms of agreement because they have way more "fuck you" money for lawyers than we do. In an ideal world they couldn't do that, but here they can and they do.
Not that I don't believe you... but I worked for some companies which used MS stuff heavily, had all kinds of agreements with MS, and I never heard of such requirement.

@levicki I'm sure Europe, the continent that got such a bug up its ass about Microsoft that they forced them to present users with a browser choice dialog box, would totally look the other way if Microsoft forced companies to buy their OS when they had no intention of using it.

So this Microsoft you are talking about is not the same entity which practiced underhanded business tactics to eliminate competition? Should we forget about it because it was "years ago"? Why don't we also forget about Hitler, colonialism and slavery when we are at forgetting things that are not done anymore?
I'm explicitly arguing with the "and they still do [vendor lock in]". Arguing stuff they haven't done in 20 years weakens your case and makes you sound like a conspiracy theorist
By the way, I'm the only one here who's allowed to make over-the-top comparisons to Hitler!
Seriously, though, MS at their worst wasn't that bad.

Random fluff, because I saw something suggestive and decided to search for a much more lewd version of it.

Keep telling yourself that.

Anyone using Firefox Lockwise? Is it a complete password manager or not yet? Is it good?
-
@marczellm On mobile devices, it registers as a password manager, so you can use passwords from your Firefox profile in apps that request them. It's pretty okay; I have so many passwords saved in Firefox that it's quite a help despite its limitations.
It's still not a standalone password management system. It only operates out of your Firefox profile, and I didn't see a way to add passwords except via Firefox itself (either with normal browsing or with a button in the Lockwise extension for Firefox Desktop, which won't run on Firefox Metro, Firefox for Android, Firefox for iOS, or Fennec).
-
@TwelveBaud What are Firefox Metro and Fennec?
-
@marczellm Special builds of Firefox for the app store on Windows 10 S/Windows Phone and Windows Mobile, respectively.
-
@TwelveBaud are those still available/supported?
-
@marczellm They're no longer supported or maintained, but old copies are still floating around, and the patch that removes them from the source can be rolled back pretty cleanly.
-
@TwelveBaud so bringing them up in the context of the discussion about Lockwise (released May 2019) was totally irrelevant.
-
Status: having a @Lorne-Kates moment, as I've just updated Firefox and the icon has changed.
Also I'm pretty sure something about the font or text rendering has changed, because everything seems... off.
-
@Zecc Yes, because Mozilla has too many graphic designers, the icon got changed again. I liked the previous one better tbh.
-
@Atazhaia Which one?
EDIT: Do mind that this image is mirrored, the one on the top-right is the oldest one and the one in the left-bottom corner is the newest.
-
@JBert The second newest one. So right bottom.

@JBert said in DEAR FIREFOX:
It's a good example of how a logo evolves from an initial rough sketch to a detailed, finished result. The only problem is that it's backwards.

Readability is now greatly improved on under- or overlined texts, including links. The lines will now be interrupted instead of crossing over a glyph.

I just got the newest preview of the next Firefox update
