https://www.emojidex.com/emoji/Shiva
definitely does look like that Shiva. Perhaps it also looks like the Shiva in whatever “Final Fantasy” is, but that would just mean that that one looks more or less like the original.
(And no, I have never even heard of any “Final Fantasy”, not to mention playing it.)
-
@Bulb There looks to be a large number of user-contributed stuff there...
Or what else to think of this?
-

Well, all emoji are sort of user-contributed. But this indeed looks almost like anybody can upload anything there.
-
@JBert
seems like @Polygeekery had a bit too much idle time
-
And strangely they have Shiva and Vishnu, but no Brahma.
I don't remember the exact details of the story, but somewhere in the Vedas it says that Brahma was punished by having only a small number of devotees.

whatever “Final Fantasy” is
...seriously? How can you possibly be completely ignorant of one of the tallest towers of modern-day geek culture?

Happily?
It always takes me a minute to context switch when someone refers to this thing as FF. I'm like...this doesn't sound like they're talking about a web browser at all?!
Your comment is also an amusing demonstration of how fragmented our culture is. It's easy to assume most people have heard about something that seemingly everyone you know is aware of when it's actually a niche thing. Granted...I know about it but pretty much only from reading this forum.

For starters, it's not really modern day. More like nostalgia tower perpetuated by the NES generation.

FFVII and FFX are the highest selling PS2 games ever. And the remake of FFVII looks to break records as well. And FFXIV is enduringly popular. So it's a bit more than that.
In this particular case, I'm pretty sure that the person responsible for our recent growth/changes in emoji plays FFXIV, where Shiva plays a major (and a bit sad) role in the plot of one of the expansions. Which would explain why that particular emoji is there. IIRC. I may be totally wrong.

PS2
so ... nostalgia, got it
That's rather past the NES generation. It's been consistently high. Basically each generation since then has had one or more major FF titles that have become "mainstream" (in that sub-culture).
-
@Benjamin-Hall
PS2 just isn't modern by any standard. It's nostalgia.
-
@Benjamin-Hall
PS2 just isn't modern by any standard. It's nostalgia.But FFXIV is current-gen. And the remake will be current-gen++ (and is really a brand new game, with the amount that they're expanding it).

So disappointing! 7 was where the series went off the rails.

I mostly agree. Of the older ones, VI was my favorite. I do play XIV, and X is also good IMO (although X-2 wasn't).
-
@Benjamin-Hall X was OK, if you look past Drownball and the abysmal voice acting. Fun story. I prefer XII, though. I know a lot of people are annoyed that the main player character was a bystander who got swept up in it rather than the most important character, but I actually kind of liked that.
But the highest point in the series, the one they've never managed to top yet, is 9. I wish they'd remake that in modern full-HD glory instead of wasting time and resources on sellout trash like 7.

Mainstream, maybe. They haven't been good since going 3D

Status: Apparently Roblox (a "free to play" game) requires an XBox Live subscription to work.
How I know? Little brother wanted to play on the big TV instead of his tablet.
Fucking Microsoft....

I tried to play VII once upon a time, but just couldn't stick with it. Maybe I'll give it another try one of these days.
My favorite Final Fantasy games aren't; they're Final Fantasy Adventure and the three Final Fantasy Legend games. (I'd rank them FFA, FFL2, FFL1, FFL3.)

@kazitor Great help.

you still have to validate the result
If this is a transformation on output, no, you don't have to validate it; you should know exactly what the range of the function is anyway. Validation is only required for inputs, and then technically only if you can't hand the responsibility to provide the right inputs to the caller (which reduces the burden for internal functions).
-
@levicki said in WTF Bites:
return (Result == SQLITE_OK) ? true : false;
Any particular reason for not doing this?
return Result == SQLITE_OK;

@levicki assumed there was a reason to use a character class instead of
.
because somehow accepting all characters was bad. That only makes a bit of sense if you have to deal with invalid inputs in the first place. Otherwise,.
is the only sensible choice.

I don't claim that the original was sensible. (Validation tends to use RE matching and not replacement.)

Their app not working with their service seems very pro competitive. Here's the page I was trying to get to in Chrome
Bloody Microsoft and their anti competitive behaviour forcing me to use a browser from another company

"There has been a problem with your application settings and PDF (or anything else you use) has been reset to Microsoft Edge". Also huge-ass "KEEP USING MICROSOFT EDGE" Button, and tiny LinkLabel "switch anyway" when you try to set new default browser on fresh Windows install.
And that's relevant to an android app how?
-
I just fired up a laptop that I haven't used since 2015, to get it ready to give to someone in need. Windows updates won't work. A tiny bit of digging and it seems that over the years MS may have changed the servers used in Windows updates and there is no automatic way to correct the issues caused because they aren't offering any backwards compatibility. The only way to update is via the media creation tool.
That's retarded. XP machines will still update. Vista and 7 machines will still update. What are people who aren't as tech savvy supposed to do if they come across this?
-
@levicki said in WTF Bites:
@boomzilla @Jaloopa By anti-competitive I mean "There has been a problem with your application settings and PDF (or anything else you use) has been reset to Microsoft Edge".
You mean, something that didn't happen here.

Vulkan debug output:
Loader is running with elevated permissions. Environment variable XDG_DATA_HOME will be ignored.
Elevated permissions? Huh? Why would the loader/the application have elevated permissions?
Ah. What you meant to say was that XDG_DATA_HOME wasn't set.
-
@levicki said in WTF Bites:
You didn't specify which windows version? If it's Windows 7, you must have SHA256 support installed or it won't update at all because it can't verify any new packages and server HTTPS certificates.
I thought I sort of did?
Anyway, Windows 10, build 10240 IIRC.

pushing Edge so indiscriminately everywhere that they even suggest it on a platform where it doesn't exist.
What platform is that? Certainly not android
-
@levicki said in WTF Bites:
but saying "Your browser does not meet minimum security requirements" is totally misleading
Same language Google uses for refusing to let you OAuth in the Android built-in WebView and all apps that use it. And Windows Phone if you're not spoofing the UA. And the Windows Shell Document Viewer. And iOS' built-in WebView.

Hey, it's not like Windows 10 has a vastly better GUI than Windows 8.1.
Start still sucks donkey dicks and so does the PC Settings.
Well, it took a while, but you and I violently agree on this one point.

@Tsaukpaetra broken clocks, blind squirrels, etc.

@levicki said in WTF Bites:
I didn't need to know that. Now I hate them even more.
So.
Microsoft are anti competitive because they fucked something up in their app so that their site doesn't work on it but it does on other companies' browsers. This is because they suggest using their browser which may or may not be available on some other hypothetical platform but is on the platform in question. The fact that their cross platform browser is available on this incredibly popular platform is even worse because... No, I can't actually work this one out.
Jesus man, learn to drop an argument. Microsoft had a funny fuck up, a WTF bite if you will. There's no need to bring up completely unrelated criticism and then attempt to defend your non sequitur to the death
