Discussion of NodeBB Updates

Edited, should be working now. Including updating the count when I post this, hopefully.
edit: yep.

Dark themes.

@Yamikuronue I was talking about my script to restore the "replies" button... I didn't do anything to the "in-reply-to" thing.
It's smaller, too, which is also dumb.

Oh for f
I can't update Chrome on my Mac so I'm stuck with non-functional uploads, but that would have been a screenshot of a readable (but still smaller than normal) reply indicator on a dark theme.

I assume the Garage is a non-public forum just for anti-Google purposes -- am I ok to post links to a Garage thread in the jellypotato GitHub issue we have open, or do I need to try to build a replication case that doesn't include a Garage thread?

Garage is fine, but you might not want to subject bug fixers to that category.

Feature request: a category where everything disappear after a week and is hidden from Google. I know it won't happen, just saying I think it would be cool. Maybe it belongs in the quixotic ideas thread.

Okay, serious question: did the last update actually improve anything?
If not, can we please revert? Because I'm seeing a lot of "deprovements".
-

Apparently the flag interface is nicer.
-
The notifications were already irritating, now they are borderline unusable.
How the hell did this even happen?
Notice the URL of page 3.
The URL tooltip is behind the video controlsIt went away afterwards and I haven't reproduced the issue again yet.
Not pictured: three "pages" with only one unread notification each.

Developers who don't bother testing? Probably

Apparently the flag interface is nicer.
As in, "actually functional". Here's how flags worked before this update:
- Someone flags a post
- Every mod/admin gets a notification
- The notification takes you to the post itself
- You have to go to the flag interface to see the flag
- For EN-US, there were no translations on the entire interface
- There's an "assign to" field, but it does nothing, contains every user who ever flagged something, and you're never quite sure if it saved because there's no feedback
- There's a status field of resolved, rejected, open, in progress. But since nobody ever goes to the flag interface first, since the notification doesn't take you there, it's kind of moot.
- There's comments, but no way to tell who said what, it's just a text field
- There is, however, a history of who changed the status and assign-to field.
This update made the following changes:
- Being assigned to a flag notifies you that you have to handle it
- THAT notification takes you to the flag interface itself.
- The flag interface has links to the person who was flagged and the person who flagged them, in case you're confused about who they are
- The space allotted to the post being flagged is larger, so more of it fits without having to click through
- You can see who added notes, and they're attributed to the person who added them automatically
- Translations exist.
So they're like, halfway to a functional system :)

That new reply indicator is a little excessive, isn't it? Is the time of the last reply really necessary?

She can go on the left, and meatspin can go on the right.
But obviously only when there's enough space.

@hungrier Yes. Who though the empty whitespace beneath the reply / quote buttons was a good idea?

Btw, this is nice illustration of how the design focuses on the wrong things, IMO.
Vertically, about 15% is used by the title bar which contains little information (basically, the title). Then about 7% at the bottom is for scrolling. Then in the middle, each row of reply/quote buttons takes again around 7%, and the "X replies" about as much (but let's ignore that one for now). Finally, we have the user names, avatars etc. that take yet another 10%/post.
So we have a very nice design where 2 posts shown on screen means the actual content of the posts (and that's including the "@foo said..." bit!) have 100-(15+7+2x(7+10)) = 40% (using Random Rounding (tm)).
'cause, you know, who cares about what people actually say in a forum? That's not like it would be the main reason someone would use a forum.

Only when you first load a topic or scroll up. When reading through normally, it hides itself away

Yeah, I scrolled up to take the screenshot. Same with the browser header; that hides itself when you scroll down.
-
@Jaloopa True. Still, when it is visible it uses a lot of space for not much information (especially here since the thread title is not on the same line as the site icon/hamburger).
And I'm not a huge fan of auto-hiding since that means the page doesn't look the same depending on what you've done (e.g. I'm scrolling without paying too much attention, then something catches my eye and I scroll back up and suddenly visually the top of the page changes, this is disturbing). For me, auto-hiding is a bit of a hack for devs who don't know how to increase the available space without really thinking too much about their layout.

Bonus points if they just straight pull it, with the special handling for 10 year+ necros.

Well, it's not like it can get more broken.

Important note for infiniscroll users on potatoes!
This change will cause infiniscroll to fully respect your "Settings > Pagination > Posts Per Page" setting (subject to the server limit, which is currently 50). If you have a high post per page setting, your browser will try to keep 2x the number of posts per page in the DOM after reloading additional posts. This may result in undesired memory consumption on resource limited systems.
Reducing your posts per page setting will result in fewer posts maintained in the DOM and thus less memory consumption.
-
@ben_lubar said in NodeBB Updates:

Well that's "fun." I was able to get @ben_lubar's post to jellypotato into nothingness.
- Go to Ben's last post in the NodeBB Updates thread.
- Expand the replies indicator.
- Scroll down to see the second reply.
- Profit?

-
@RaceProUK
Meh, no bonus points, it's the same bug as we've already seen.
-
@izzion Probably, but it's the first reported instance of it entirely unloading a thread.

That bug you're encountering has existed before the breakening. It's what happens when the last post in a topic has a reply. It's been known since the popcorn button was added.

@ben_lubar And no one's bothered to fix it? If that had been fixed before, we might not have had this "breakening."
