I got banned by association. I was never antagonistic on their forums and I only reported 2 or 3 bugs, and flamed me as an idiot user who doesn't count because I happened to find an Internet Explorer bug while using a Microsoft Surface tablet which would never be supported because it's a stupid device.
Ah yes. That was a good one. Wasn't the answer basically "Surface tablet is not supported" even after you said that the same bug existed on desktop IE...
Yep.

- Updated nodebb-plugin-unresponsive to work on whatever browser @Lorne-Kates bought from the antique shop.
It was actually broken the same way in the latest Firefox. But only if you use desktop mode, which apparently only he and blakey use and I guess blakey must not use Firefox.

Who says he bought it?
-
@twelvebaud I'll ask him, I guess.
Edit: Asked. Let's see what happens. Also, just looking, I see a few WTDWTFers that aren't banned, such as @accalia, @RaceProUK, and @PJH.

Doesn't change the fact that a lot of accounts where banned without cause. Maybe he forgot a few, maybe it's because there are English. Maybe they where actually liked. Maybe the stars aligned and the unicorn did shit a pot of gold.

Unlikely, that would have killed the unicorn worker, and you can't have that!
-
@tsaukpaetra
can't we have the unicorn to automatically restart after such a thing?

You're not looking hard enough. I'm banned; just not blackholed/anon'd.
@anotherusername said in Discussion of NodeBB Updates:

But desktop's different...
Ah - wrong meme; don't mind me.
-
I am only self-banned.

After that I backed off because it just wasn't worth engaging the Discourse team anymore, and I got wiped out in the Mass Banning even though I hadn't posted for nearly a year at that point.
You were presumed to be a spambot. No real humans use Internet Explorer and Surface tablets.

- Instead of moving onto a second line, the header buttons will now overlap things to the right of them. For most non-admin users, the only thing it will overlap is the hidden post index meter on unread or recent.
Yeah, yeah, that's desktop mode.

You need to set up a scheduled task that logs you into Meta.d and posts a few things in 272 years.

I still get a giggle that for all the "by association" accounts that were hammered, I wasn't.
Despite being THE most vocal opponent of DumpHorse. I had no problem calling the code shitty, the developers assholes, and personally insulting Jeff for being-- well, the cuntshitter that is Jeff.
I even tested the waters by posting bugs on Meta.Derp.
It wasn't until I copy/pasted a multi-paragraph, swears-filled rant against Jeff's behavior FROM here (from the Discopocalypse thread), TO there that they finally acted.
Like, seriously.

Actually, please do. We need a dead-man's switch to take down The Singularity if they get out of control.
The year is 2290
ding
We have a scheduled task to perform
Directive: load meta.discourse.org
Error! Eeeeeroor! ee--ee-- {buffering}{The Singularity's world-spanning multi-quatrillion core CPU overloads, melts down, and destroys the AI}
We're free! Free at last!
Thank you, Mott555, our savior!
Too bad he isn't here to thank in person
Well, you know, we do have the technology to recreate a mind electronically...THE NIGHTMARE CONTINUES...

Hey @pie_flavor. Remember when I said most of us weren't dicks to the DiscoDev dicks?
@Lorne-Kates was not part of "most of us".

It'll be 262 years too late though.
Having said that, though - I note that it said 'next decade' a couple of years back...

It is the fusion power of forum software.
-
@pjh said in Discussion of NodeBB Updates:
next decade
Is that the decade that ends in just under 3 years.
Or the one that starts at that time?

It certainly incentivizes datacenters to want fusion power.

It's not clear. Nearly 6 years ago (Jun 16 2012):

OUR SOLUTION
So we propose:
- Rebooting forum software for the next 10 years, getting us out of the awful 1999 phpBB/vBulletin design rut we’re apparently permanently stuck in.
-
@pie_flavor so, are you banned yet?

@anotherusername said in Discussion of NodeBB Updates:

I don't think they'd ban him until he asks why his topic was deleted without warning first.
-

Why would they ban a fellow DiscoDev?
-

Hey @pie_flavor. Remember when I said most of us weren't dicks to the DiscoDev dicks?
@Lorne-Kates was not part of "most of us".
Tobe Faire, I only started in on them personally after they revealed themselves to be shitty, horrible people who were intentionally fucking things up here.
-
@pie_flavor said in Discussion of NodeBB Updates:
Well, maybe if we asked nicely.
Considering how insane Atwood was with his shitty forum, has anybody considered that pie_flavor is Atwood? Like he has some psychological need to come here and talk up his product because he can't stand that there's anybody out there that doesn't like him?
Kind of like that time when he approached me all buddy-buddy out of nowhere and wanted to play Battlefield 1 like we'd been best of friends all along.
The guy's fucking insane, is what I'm saying. I wouldn't put this past him.
-
@pie_flavor said in Discussion of NodeBB Updates:
And might I point out that all of the people using their forum bug tracker haven't gotten banned yet.
Pfft. I was banned for that. Probably half this forum was, too.
You're full of shit buddy.
(IIRC, it was the topic when they removed Gravatar support and fucked up a bunch of accounts out of nowhere in the process because all of a sudden out of nowhere Gravatar was "a privacy concern", and I pointed out that:
- Gravatar's functionality hadn't changed between when they implemented it and it somehow became "a privacy concern",
- If it's was such a concern, maybe they should have spent a little time thinking about that before adding it in the first place, because a tiny bit of upfront design would have saved the effort to add support for it and also the effort to later remove support for it and also the effort of fixing the bug the thread I was posting to was about.
Fucking dumbshits over there.)
-
@pie_flavor said in Discussion of NodeBB Updates:
Hence, 'still'. I look at the bug reports forum, I see zero animosity.
Of course not; only the sycophants are left. It's why you can take a look at, say, EVE Online and see only jackasses-- because the jackasses have driven off all the people who aren't jackasses long ago.

Also, they did not think that their backdoor phone-home in their CDN to distribute pictures of letters was ever a privacy concern.
-
@blakeyrat nah, he'd never be able to hide it so successfully for this long.

I totally forgot about that. We should run a front-page article about it sometime.

Oh, not this again.
-
-
@pie_flavor This is for you:
-
@pie_flavor hmmmm, I wonder how @julianlam rates us on the interactions he has had with us?
We tend to respond in kind.
-
@polygeekery
I mean, on the other side of it, Atwood is not wrong in any of his criticism there. And how often would you put up with one of your clients "responding in kind" to perceived slights received from you or your staff? Even your paying clients (which we weren't) would get fired if they were stalking you all over your region, bad mouthing you to anyone you came in contact with, cutting into prospective client meetings to say "@Polygeekery's firm is total shit, don't even get within baseball bat reach of them"... which really isn't that far from what this community did (and occasionally still does) in terms of seeking out forums that are discussing or trialing Discourse... though it's less actively seeking out now and more trying to argue against other communities we're active in adopting Discourse.I mean, yeah, you can charge some of what Atwood did first as "acting in bad faith" (the unwanted moderating) or being abrasive (the meme post responses). But he did at least try to moderate some of the actions we complained about, from his side... and many people on our side persistently refused to moderate their behavior, even after being directly requested to do so.
So yeah, I'm not really surprised that he offered to pay to make us go away, and I would score him as the righteous one in this relationship 8 times out of 10.
-
Is that why the rest of the accounts were banned (i.e. the ones that weren’t blakeyrat alts)? To cut all ties?
-
-
@izzion you are not wrong, but I also would not obtrusively involve myself in customer social spaces. I would also not try to change them.
I also wish we had known about the $10K. I would have lobbied to have @wood donate it to @ben_lubar's stupid cat shelter.
-
@ben_lubar said in Discussion of NodeBB Updates:
@mods no more needing to clear out spammer profiles!
So the default is that (new) users with zero reputation points can add stuff to their "about me", website, and signature fields? If our mods have less work, then I'm assuming that we're not using the defaults, then, yes?
-
@izzion said in Discussion of NodeBB Updates:
I mean, on the other side of it, Atwood is not wrong in any of his criticism there.
The part he kind of glosses over is that we called Discourse shitty because it was shitty. And that half our criticisms were along the lines of "you didn't follow any of the advice in your own blog".
Also we wouldn't have been half as "toxic" if he hadn't started shoving his nose all up in our bizness, trying to change how the site's moderator, editing other people's posts, without asking permission from anybody.
What a douche.
-
@blakeyrat
https://i.imgur.com/6pgFf88.png
Hopefully I get a response soon.
-
@pie_flavor That's the only complaint that has merit? Really? The dismissive meme image replies to valid bug reports from a person who's goal was to "improve discourse on the web" aren't something to complain about?
(How do you improve discourse on the web? Apparently the answer is to ignore completely valid points and instead respond with a picture of a smiling donkey.
That's not even getting into his stupid misguided belief that gamification of websites improves them when anybody who's spent 14 seconds on Wikipedia or StackOverflow can clearly see it does not, but at least that "improvement" of web discourse had some slight rationality to it.)
... whatever. Atwood's a douche, and you're a douche.
-
@blakeyrat
(am I doing it right)
-
@pie_flavor said in Discussion of NodeBB Updates:

Not quite. What you gotta do is make that the first reply to a topic about "My browser crashes when I click the 'Quote' button" and then immediately lock the thread.

You forgot how he would like things in PMs he was not a part of.
-
@izzion to clarify: I do not fault Atwood for telling us to kick rocks. I fault him for getting involved in the first place. He knew what kind of place this was and he thought he could change it to be his vision of a perfect little utopia. He did so voluntarily. He got push back and he became more of an antagonistic dick.
-
@polygeekery It's the hypocrisy that bugged me. He had this big noble "mission" of improving discourse, and guess what happened here? The only topic we talked about for about 6 solid months was how shitty Discourse (the software) was! That was it!
Our discourse was not improved. It's still worse, IMO, than it was before Discourse (the software) came along.
Then just in case that wasn't enough, Atwood personally comes here and makes everything worse. (And, like I said, the fact that Discourse ignored pretty much all the advice Atwood himself gave in his blog posts.)
So much for his great "mission".
