Discussion of NodeBB Updates

@zecc I miss the search bar taking you where you wanted to go without actually going to a new page, and without it using some wacky relevance algorithm which decides that the post title which literally contains your search term verbatim should be on page 5 or so. I miss a lot of things.

If you miss them, go back to someplace that has them? Or, you know, it's open source; pretty sure pull requests are accosted.

I do. Every day. It's quite nice.

First I'd have to learn NodeJS, and I'd really prefer to never have to do that.

First I'd have to learn NodeJS, and I'd really prefer to never have to do that.I don't actually want to help, complaining about things is so much more effective because of the dopamine infusion provided by the catharsis when doing so, which is actually so much better than fixing the problems I complain aboutFTFY. You really should talk to your psychologist about your habits...
-
@tsaukpaetra Which you made up? Sure. No, it's that JavaScript is up there on my list of worst programming languages, and if I never use it in my entire life it'll still be too much. If it were written in something I actually know, everything I complain about would have been fixed within a few days after my signing up.
-
@pie_flavor said in Discussion of NodeBB Updates:

Proud words coming from someone unwilling to learn and grow.
Anecdotal rebuttal: I could easily program a human-like AI in a day if only I could use the programming language I'm used to.

@tsaukpaetra said in Discussion of NodeBB Updates:
Why would a notification about someone liking your post near the beginning of the topic take you to the latest unread?
I obviously as referring to those, but while we're at it why would following a notification of a like clear out all the notifications of unread posts in that thread?
@tsaukpaetra said in Discussion of NodeBB Updates:
This is due majorly because the damn thing is only updated after you click it open. Apparently toasting the data and automatically adding it to the notifications on the same call is too hard....
Just greying out the menu (or giving any other sort of feedback whatsoever) and temporarily becoming insensitive would be good enough for me.
@tsaukpaetra said in Discussion of NodeBB Updates:
I personally never understood suggested threads...
Neither did I, TBH. But AFAIR they didn't list completely read topics, so they were occasionally a good shortcut to other threads I would visit next anyway.

To be fair I missed that in Discourse already.
-
@zecc said in Discussion of NodeBB Updates:

Because stock NodeBB treats a visited thread as "read" even though that's preposterous.
Sadly, the improved concept mentioned in the unofficial forum improvements thread doesn't seem to be being worked on.
-
@zecc said in Discussion of NodeBB Updates:
Clicking any notification does not guarantee that you'll go to the first unread post in that thread.
I've given up on notifications. I go to
/recent/watched
instead and then after that's all clear I click remaining notifications.

Basically, when the forum wants to compute what index in a topic a post has, it would previously load all the post IDs from the topic and then do an
indexOf
in JavaScript on the server.

Never go full Discourse.

I didn't even attempt to fork it due to past experience.
Once the version with https://github.com/NodeBB/NodeBB/pull/6229 is out, I might try forking again.

My bad experiences happened after I finished selecting the posts to be forked and watchdog.bash killed NodeBB and I had to clean up the database manually because WHAT ARE TRANSACTIONS LOL

My goal for 2018 is to get WTDWTF on a database with actual transactions and foreign keys and other fun stuff like that without migrating to different forum software.

@ben_lubar Why not migrate back to Discourse for the fun of it?

Why don't you fuck right off? Discourse is the forum software everyone would be required to use if the Nazis had won the war.
-
@pie_flavor said in Discussion of NodeBB Updates:

Here's the simplest answer I can give you:
They banned us from their support forum. I'm in NodeBB's Slack channel, so I can report bugs directly to the devs and get responses immediately, but if we had a problem on Discourse, we'd have to hope that someone else had the same problem, because we're not allowed to participate in its development in any way.

@ben_lubar Well, maybe if we asked nicely.

@pie_flavor said in Discussion of NodeBB Updates:

You're not really understanding how it actually went. A lot of us were...diplomatic. Not chummy, but not overly antagonistic. Neutral.
We also never did anything on their forums, towards the end. In the early days we all had Mr. Burns avatars, but that is pretty minor.
The Discourse team just cannot handle criticism, no matter how valid. Unless you are paying them money to host your forum they do not give a fuck about you or your problems with their software.
These forums were the absolute best bug testing they ever could have asked for. Period. Do you think the idiots over at boingboing.idiots would have ever found their XSS vulnerabilities? No. But some Russian script kiddie would have and hosed a bunch of their users.
They don't even have a bug tracker. At all. They use their forum software for that. That's not dog fooding. That's just stupid.
-
@polygeekery said in Discussion of NodeBB Updates:

probably the only thing that is still true. And might I point out that all of the people using their forum bug tracker haven't gotten banned yet.

You just made a false statement based on the information you were given. The information you were given is correct. A majority of WTDWTF members were banned for hundreds of years each just for reporting bugs in the bug tracker.
-
@ben_lubar Hence, 'still'. I look at the bug reports forum, I see zero animosity.
-

Because they ban people and delete all traces those people were ever there if they so much as attempt to suggest something may be incorrect.

It is actually worse than that. I have not been on their forums for a while but the last time I was it was a few orders of magnitude worse than an echo chamber. It was comprised of people with their nose so far up Jeff's ass that they can see out of his belly button. Their forums are not an echo chamber, it is nothing but sycophants. Everyone speaks in unison like some creepy cult, afraid to contradict the cult leader.
Fuck that. I want users and customers to tell me what they think.

@polygeekery said in Discussion of NodeBB Updates:

User here. I think your head's up your ass on this one.
-
@pie_flavor Let me be clear.
I am the reason Discourse now has a "delete user" function. Me. Personally.
Because at the time, all Jeff could do was ban me for a hundred years, rename my account to "anon" followed by a string of gibberish, tombstone my password, change my e-mail address to be invalid so I couldn't recover it, disconnect me from SSO, delete all my posts (which doesn't actually delete them, since I retained all of Sam's likes) and blacklist my domain from signing up. The only reason he didn't delete my account was that he couldn't, a gap in the admin tools he has now filled in.
I'll happily show you the post that got me blackholed when I get home. I think it was a request to tweak some indexes so that locking threads didn't thrash the forums for an hour or so, per thread locked. I even said "Please".
Edit:
Notice how several Testers and Senior Testers are "anon..."? Pretty much all of those are TDWTFers, their accounts "destroyed" as mine was (though only with a 2 year ban). Only a few people racked up a 39-year or 100-year ban, and people who blanked their profile ahead of time just got banned without the accompanying destruction, but it's still clear that they don't want anything to do with us.Can you tell me what @abarker did to get blackholed? I can't.

Maybe if TDWTF used the "stable" version of the software you wouldn't find so many critical bugs. Most people get by without participating in the development of the software they use.

He was flooding meta.discourse.org with bad bug reports. These were not reports about bugs our users care about, but unimportant filler bug reports with the intention of making us look bad. We have no obligation of letting you guys slander our product on our own forum.

I got banned by association. I was never antagonistic on their forums and I only reported 2 or 3 bugs, and flamed me as an idiot user who doesn't count because I happened to find an Internet Explorer bug while using a Microsoft Surface tablet which would never be supported because it's a stupid device. After that I backed off because it just wasn't worth engaging the Discourse team anymore, and I got wiped out in the Mass Banning even though I hadn't posted for nearly a year at that point.

Ah yes. That was a good one. Wasn't the answer basically "Surface tablet is not supported" even after you said that the same bug existed on desktop IE...
