:fa_bullhorn: The sound of AN ANNOUNCEMENT BEING MADE (or: Request for Comments: Comments)

Users that existed when the first import happened will not be re-imported during the second import.
What if the user has their name changed in between? What will that break?
-
Unless you changed your user ID AND your email address, it's going to be able to find your account.
-
Anyway, it's not my fault JBert is a lying liar who lies.
I prefer the term "got fooled by", and I have made a fool of myself when I spoke with too much certainty.
@NedFodder said:Not a liar, just bringing up an issue from two years ago.
I also linked to a forum post which described the situation 10 months ago. I could not find anything about a change to the unread system in the release logs. I guess some testing could help figure it out.At any rate, having the topic link go immediately to the last unread post is still up for debate at the NodeBB forums. There was some talk that an admin might be able to change the behavior but they didn't post clear instructions (instead it was some waffling about changing settings or changing theme files).
-
What do tags do?
They're additional meta information you can throw on a topic. From the tags UI, you should be able to see which topics have a given tag.
-
Ah, it looks like there's a .topic .post-signature rule taking precedence.
CSS really is a dark art...
Here's a good source on CSS specificity and inheritance:
-
Do we need to create a "Discourse did it better, believe it or not" thread on TDWTNodeBB?
Maybe we should.
So the NodeBB people can implement those features (better and faster) in about 30 seconds.
-
Seriously!?
How did it take this long for someone to point out this WTF. So if I go grab my Fire and start surfing, it's forgotten every thread was ever read and starts at the top!? Then when I go back to my desktop, I have to re-read stuff read in my Fire because now my desktop's out of date?
Currently, when you enter a topic it does start at the top, but it will give you this handy popup:
Which does just what it says and seems to carry over just fine between devices.
Is it a little inconvenient? Yes. But I'm sure we can either find something out there now as a work around, or one of our more enterprising members can submit a PR to fix it.
-
No repro. I just did that here: https://community.nodebb.org/topic/5582/change-composer-to-redactor
I opened the thread read the first 14 posts. Navigated to home, went back into the thread. Toaster pops up asking if I want to skip to my last unread post, clicking on it takes me to post 15.
This is not the issue. Try going there on a different device and watch while it does not remember where you left off on the other device.
Optimised for Redis; keeping the server's memory footprint in check.

They're additional meta information you can throw on a topic.
Can you filter/follow/watch them? Can you change tags after creating the topic? I don't recall having seen a button for it.
-

Also, as reported by @sloosecannon on the NodeBB test instance:
@sloosecannon said:
Clicking the "about 8 hours ago" is a direct link to the (first) new post. So NodeBB functions more like a "standard" forum that way - the topic link always takes you to post #1 and the reply link takes you to the other one... It should be very possible to copy the href from the "8 hours ago" and put it on the main one
-
No, they fixed the bug 1 minute after I reported it.
So we're going from the land of Discourse where you get banned 1 minute after reporting a bug, to the land of NodeBB where the bug gets fixed 1 minute after reporting. Nice!
-
Can you filter/follow/watch them?
Not that I've found so far.
Can you change tags after creating the topic?
Yes, by editing the OP. Same way you edit the topic title.
-
So... that's a no?
Why are you bugging Ben L about something you can fix yourself in like 20 seconds?
Worry about the data that's difficult to preserve, not the avatar your lazy ass can change at any time.
-
This is not the issue. Try going there on a different device and watch while it does not remember where you left off on the other device.
@cpradio specifically called out the case I described: the same session on the same device. Earlier up thread, I specifically said that NodeBB remembers your unread posts across different devices.
Lemme repeat that:
#NodeBB remembers your unread posts across different devices.
(I don't mean to pick on you specifically, @Mikael_Svahnberg, but I'm tired of having to say this).
-
Or maybe I was just asking for a simple answer instead of a short essay, much like you yourself are wont to do
-
Lemme repeat that:
NodeBB remembers your unread posts across different devices.
Unless you have a time machine set to 2014, in which case all bets are off.
-
But what about mobile? Mobile is different.
:fa_troll_face:
-
If the question wasn't worth asking in the first place, it's CERTAINLY not worth clarifying.
-
Unfortunately, that joke no longer works on NodeBB.
-
So they're close to being useless? COOL!
-
What? Of course you can filter them: https://discourse.local.lubar.me/tags/likes
-
NodeBB remembers your unread posts across different devices.
(I don't mean to pick on you specifically, @Mikael_Svahnberg, but I'm tired of having to say this).
I whole-heartedly endorse this statement (so long as you enter the topic at the beginning).
-
so long as you enter the topic at the beginning
And don't accidentally hit an arrow key or move the mouse wheel, both of which will make the popup disappear before you can click on it. There are lots of annoying things about this unread post stuff.
-
I think it might also remove a topic from the unread list if you visit it, irregardless of how many posts you read.
-
Yikes, that's bad. It remembers my last unread post, but the whole topic is missing from the unread list. And when I go back to the topic list, the link to the topic isn't blue anymore either. I'd consider that a bug.
-
Can you filter/follow/watch them?
Why? We've never used them for anything useful, anyway.
-
I can't access the "." tag.
-
Watching based on tag would be potentially useful to some people ...
-
That shouldn't be possible to create anymore with the new minimum length of 3.
-
Why does the forum silently not tag a topic with "..." even though it is not visibly rejected when submitting the post?
-
Until others find out what tags get watched and you get tag bombed.
-
Watching based on tag would be potentially useful to some people
Yes, if we used tags for anything sensible. However, historically we've tended to abuse tags for random, quasi-humorous gibberish.
-
#NodeBB remembers your unread posts across different devices.
Ok, ok, you're right, I could reproduce that the unread counter is replicated to different devices when taking care to enter the topic at the start and hitting the toaster before it disappears due to scrolling.
My apologies to @Yamikuronue, @blakeyrat and @e4tmyl33t for rustling their jimmies.
Still seems odd that they said it wasn't in there 10 months ago, but at least they did fix it.
-
Ok everyone, I found out the problem. What Discourse and NodeBB call bookmarks are not supported by the importer. What Discourse and NodeBB call "last unread post" are called "bookmarks" by the importer.
I've fixed this and will take the testing forum down for a bit so I can make sure it works.
-
I think it might also remove a topic from the unread list if you visit it, irregardless of how many posts you read.
Is it possible that this is just on @ben_lubar's install or a badly adjusted setting?
BTW: if a topic gets a new post, does it get added to the "Unread" list again, and if so, is there a way to do something similar to Discourse's "Normal" or "Muted" thread status?
-
Is it possible that this is just on @ben_lubar's install or a badly adjusted setting?
I don't think so, but I'm not 100% on that.
BTW: if a topic gets a new post, does it get added to the "Unread" list again, and if so, is there a way to do something similar to Discourse's "Normal" or "Muted" thread status?
Yes, it does get re-added to the list when a new post shows up. I think the current ignore capability is by category, not thread. There's a watch / unwatch, but that toggles whether you get actual notifications for new posts.
-
Is it possible that this is just on @ben_lubar's install or a badly adjusted setting?
No, I tested this on the meta.nodebb site. Seems broken to me.
-
I'm shocked and amazed
What, still? One would've thought your heart would've given out from the strain by now.
-
I want a Twilight Sparkle avatar.

Hello bookhorse!
called "bookmarks" by the importer.
Is that why there's a little blue flag that ghosts for a second whenever I click the "go to this post" links?
-
-
Can we keep this thread strictly business-related, at least until the 19th? Please take your colorful ponies elsewhere.
-
Thy wish is my command, o master of migration.
-
What's a gration?
-
Ok, testing forum is back up. Just noticed that the importer base plugin moves the authors discussion forum back to where it was, but none of the permissions are changed on anything so that's just one click and drag thing to fix it. Anyway, you should now have access to your bookmarks.
-
What Discourse and NodeBB call "last unread post" are called "bookmarks" by the importer.
That sounds like a documentation bug.
-
Thy wish is my command, o master of migration.
Wow, that was rare for this forum. The request to GTFO from the thread was handled grazefully!
... fuck you, that was funny!
Aaaanyway, back on topic, we're testing the tracking on the test instance a bit. Seems to be mostly working with some weirdness happening near / at the end of the thread: seems like what NodeBB considers to be your eyeline is somewhere mid-screen, meaning you can't "read" the last post or two if they are short. Still investigating, but this seems like something that needs improvement.
-
@Lorne_Kates said:

We put a lot of effort developing Discourse, I assure you that that will take more than 30s to implement all of our features in another software.
I'm glad you'll have something else to complain, other than my work now.
-
Sorry, no longer wlcome here.

Does any of the styling look weird on any of the pages?
