I’m happy to announce that in our fourth year, we’ve just added two team members:
This brings the total Discourse team size up from 9 to 11 souls.Fake post! There is no way Discourse-math is accurate enough to get that calculation right.
-
@lorne-kates souls != people. They've certainly claimed some souls like some twisted reaper but the fact that they have added two people and claimed two more souls is entirely coincidental.
-
@arantor I assumed they were holding the souls hostage while the people who belong to them are forced to work on Discourse. It would explain a lot.
-
@boomzilla yes, but it doesn't reconcile discomath.
-
@arantor A cry for help from trapped souls.
-
@abarker, it seems as if you are allowed back on meta again:

Side note:
-
Side-side note: Apparently discourse's "Mobile view" is available in the hamburger menu.
-
@tsaukpaetra I wish NodeBB's hamburger menu would be a fixed feature on desktop. Since, you know, there's space for it on screen, even more than in mobile.
I've considered inspecting what's going on
{DOM,CSS}+
-wise before, but ain't nobody got time for that.
Interesting: if I narrow the browser enough for it to switch to "mobile" view and back again, it pops up the "Are you sure you wish to discard this post?" dialog. I'm guessing it knows how to transfer from "desktop composer panel" to "mobile composer panel" but not the other way around.

OMFG they're still at it!
I really want to pop in and ask if it's too much to ask for them to make their phones just a few pixels wider, but they probably wouldn't get the joke...

It is fine to assume world has moved on from iPhone 4 form factor by now on height! iPhone 5 / SE should be minimum spec on mobile screen size.
Fuck the users, why haven't they already pre ordered an iphone X like me?

Quick aside, we only support the default browser on mobile (Safari on iOS, Chrome on Android)
But what about Edge on Windows 10 Mobile?
Also, I guess using the non-default browser on a phone is . Not to talk about running SEVERAL browsers on a phone! Seriously, what kind of madman would do that? Seriously, there's zero usecases for that. Especially in webdev. Because who actually TESTS their websites on anything but the default browser?
-
@atazhaia said in How can this be so wrong??? (AKA the Discopocalypse thread):
the default browser?
Ugh. Don't remind me of the "browser" that came before Chrome was standard in Android. Barely enough to get to the store and download Chrome.... Oh wait...
-
@tsaukpaetra said in How can this be so wrong??? (AKA the Discopocalypse thread):

Though, the guy was apparently wrong about iOS 10. But it doesn't matter because Discourse is too futuristic for those phones anyways:
Single threaded perf correlates perfectly with JavaScript performance. iPhone 4s scores ~280 at the very very very bottom of the list in the Geekbench 4 results, and that iPhone 4s would be quite a bit faster than an iPhone 4!

Yeah, Android has the weird situation where the default browser on AOSP is actually just Browser, and it's a different app from Chrome. I've noticed it tends to crash on JavaScript-heavy pages considerably more.
-
@heterodox While normal Android changed the default browser to Chrome in Android 4.4 iirc, scrapping the old browser in the process. Ofc, other vendors may still run their own browsers as the defaults.
-

Define "normal Android". To me AOSP is Android, as it's the only single platform you can make a generalization about. AIUI Chrome is still licensed software for redistributors (Google trademarks etc.) so you can't assume Android 4.4+ is going to have it on all devices.
-
And then there's the likes of Samsung who ship their own browser on their phones.
-
@heterodox I should have defined it better. So, something like the Google standard Android. The OS with the default app set as defined by Google.

Would it be safe to assume that development of Browser stopped at the same time Chrome started being shipped by default on all Android default ROMs?
-

That never happened; that was my point. Chrome started being shipped by default on Google devices.
But yes, while Git history may say something different, I'd say Browser development has effectively stalled on anything non-critical.

Which is effectively the same as Android devices. The only exception I can think of is Kindle devices, and we all know how well the fire phone did.
ISTR, there's a clause in the contract that states any manufacturer who sells phones without Google services isn't allowed to sell any with them: a clause stopping e.g. Samsung from trying an experimental phone with all Samsung services and nothing Google unless they're ready to completely drop Google. That's why Kindles are from a manufacturer you've probably never heard of

I hadn't heard that and I wonder if it's speculation; I would imagine those contracts are confidential. If it's true, Google should be getting fucking roasted because that's unbelievably shitty. A manufacturer who markets iPhone clones should also be able to market phones to lower socioeconomic strata.
-
@heterodox Here's the article I found it in
Not quite as bad as I remembered.
While it might not be an official requirement, being granted a Google apps license will go a whole lot easier if you join the Open Handset Alliance. The OHA is a group of companies committed to Android—Google's Android—and members are contractually prohibited from building non-Google approved devices. That's right, joining the OHA requires a company to sign its life away and promise to not build a device that runs a competing Android fork.
TLDR: if you want to include Google services you need a license from Google. You can join the open handset alliance to make that easier, but if you do you're not allowed to sell any devices with a competing fork of Android

OTOH, then you're less likely to get a device and feel cheated when you can't access all the normal stuff you expected to find there. There used to be a lot of concern over Android fragmentation, IIRC, and I guess stuff like this keeps it all together a bit.
