WTF is happening with Windows 10? And nothing else

@Gąska Some people seem to think that just because I like pointing out how their complaints are stupid, there are no real complaints to be had. Anyway, it's almost definitely specific to my setup; it started as soon as I installed Fences.

I use Fences for a long time, no problems with explorer.

No, no – what you do is be stupid about other's complaints.

@Tsaukpaetra Unsure how that screenshot relates to Windows Explorer.
I've had five Explorer windows since I booted my machine.
But...what does that have to do with the screenshot. Are you really a @ben_lubar alt?

Explorer crashes
I get them every once in a while, on both 1809 (home machine, haven't updated ) and 1903 (work machine). It usually happens completely without warning or any apparent reason.

From Earth-73
@pie_flavor said in WTF is happening with Windows 10? And nothing else:I had an issue where Explorer (all windows of it) and the stuff that used it like the start menu would just crash and restart. Sometimes it would be hung instead but it'd crash and restart as soon as I opened the start menu.

I see that, after all those years, the stability of Windows didn't really improve after all, no matter what Earth you live on

TBF, the Explorer crashes don't really affect anything beyond closing any open folder windows.
-
I can't remember the last time I had an Explorer crash that wasn't caused by an extension. Or a general system crash that wasn't caused by hardware or 3rd party software.
IIRC, Windows 7 was way more unstable for me than Windows 10 has been. No matter the build. And the only installation bugs I've seen was the 'resetting drive letters' one screwing with Google Drive Filestream...but that's Google Drive's fault for having fixed drive letters and installing itself as a virtual drive rather than mounting to a folder.

I've been practicing, since, you know, he doesn't have anything to say lately...

Here's a test anyone with a flash drive can do: based on a bug report on FreeNAS, why moderately recent ISO image (if written to a flash drive using e.g.
dd
) will bluescreen Windows 7 or 10 upon Re insertion.Challenge: make such a flash drive and plug it in, and prove once and for all which version works better!

It happens to me from time to time. Though half the times it was hardware issue, and anyway it's very rare.
Or a general system crash that wasn't caused by hardware or 3rd party software.
Had it happen a couple times on W10.
IIRC, Windows 7 was way more unstable for me than Windows 10 has been. No matter the build.
Whereas I don't remember even a single non-hardware BSOD or any other stability issue with W7. 98 - I could BSOD on demand. XP - it sometimes decided to crash randomly for no reason. W7 - never (hardware issues notwithstanding).

I can do this on any version of Windows.

Ah yes, the old crash-the-OS keyboard shortcut.
(And before those running Linux-hardware start snickering: Linux includes an equivalent feature.)

This has been my experience as well.
Comes with using Win7 a lot more than Win10.

Status: A recovered engram reminded me I was complaining that Windows now (apparently) sets ACLs on my NAS.
Well, I tried it on a different one that hasn't been updated in.... a while, and lo...
BEHOLD!!!!
Also, apparently I need to resync SIDs.
-
@Tsaukpaetra said in WTF is happening with Windows 10? And nothing else:
to resync SIDs.
Edit: That was... much simpler than I expected. Luckily the Backup server doesn't normally get new files from people so I just erased that new file and re-initialised Winbind with the correct IDMAP range, and everything worked.
Good on you, FreeNAS!

Status: Windows said it auto-installed an App for me!
Gee... thanks?
What does it do?
Yeah. Thanks. Much appreciate. Such help.

Yeah, that's what I thought.

Just updated from 1903 to 1909, it was surprisingly quick, to the point that I thought it was fail-fast giving up. But nope, in under a couple minutes I was fully upgraded. Weird,
-
@LB_
And apparently 1909 and 1903 are compatible with the same CUs. So it looks like 1909 is just a CU, rather than the OS upgrade we’ve grown to know and hate.

the eighth free update for its latest operating system.
Like that's an impressive thing or something...
It's not like a Free Update to the next Major Version (of which, there of course, will never be) a la update from XP to Vista.

Got the retarded half start menu thing again this morning.
EDIT: And now restarting is stalling.
-
Mine keeps trying and failing to update from 1803 to 1909. Reboots for updates, fails to reboot, then does a rollback after which it tries to update again.
-
Microsoft is still updating 1809. Just installed the latest updates, now up to 17763.864 .... Everything still working well (as well as you're going to get for Windows 10).
Upgrading to 1903/1909 is still optional. It will be interesting to see how long it will be till Microsoft goes back to forced upgrades to newer versions.
-
@levicki said in WTF is happening with Windows 10? And nothing else:
LTSC is a reason why you are still getting updates to 1809.
A reason but also the semi-annual updates are supported for 18 months even on Home and Pro.
1809 until May 2020, 1903 until Dec 2020 etc.

Have they fixed the "WU uses exponential time algorithm" bug by now? Because I've been told they have at least three times, and I've had it on XP, Vista, and 7. Will be interesting to wait for it to surface on 10.
Moores law is a fix, right?

Didn't read the thread. Last couple of posts make it sound like I should keep my laptop's screen shut for a while.

Alright, as far as I can tell, the features of this Windows 10 update are as follows:
- Disabled, enabled, removed names from, and set as default sound devices at random.
- Windows refuses to believe I rebooted during the 8 hours it took this update to install.
- Reinstalled and re-enabled network printer I've disabled like 300 times now.
- Computer seems to have "helpfully" moved my AppData folder to the slower drive.

I'll summarize: for about 4 years the group
bitchescomplains about Windows 10 in the way this group tends to do. We make fun of the well-known things, the random problems various folks have had are mentioned, and occasionally someone goes off on a tangent that makes no sense at all and/or spawns off a new thread.ObTopic: I went ahead and updated my machines to 1909 yesterday. No obvious problems so far. It's a pretty minor update; hopefully they'll stick to a yearly cycle of "big stuff" and "bug fixes" rather than try to find some big change(s) to inflict on us all every six months. I will laugh, though, if after one of next year's releases it decides that my two monitors are actually a folding touchscreen or something.

They've already got the idea. It's about how much it bleeds back into (desktop) Windows 10. In other words, we're doomed.
