Why would I do something retarded like that?

If you are, then navigate to Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features > Installed updates > KB4517389 > Uninstall
Hey, genious, I don't have a "Program" entry on my control panel. I do have Programs and Features, though. But that update isn't installed. Not that I could do anything about it on my work machine.
Hey genious, that's because you changed your control panel layout.

It's not unfeasible that @boomzilla's work computer had the other view as the default as there's a group policy for it.
Why does Windows 10 need so many views of the control panel anyway?

Nobody has said they don't work. They say that random other "hacks" they've found don't work, or that shockingly enough group policy overrides the registry. Reading the documentation is just so hard.

I did. Repeatedly. Because I tried them all.

So is writing, apparently, considering how much wrong information regarding Windows Update there is in MSDN.
Edit: and no, my laptop isn't connected to domain.

Huh. I suppose it is possible that I did such a thing at some point. I guess I just underestimated MS's ability to fuck up a UI like that. I'm sure I'll make the same mistake again soon.

Seriously? They've had this since Windows 7. Have you really never noticed for all these years? Especially since category view is and has always been the default.

@TimeBandit The page explaining how to configure auto update behavior? It's the same link every time I post it.

Seriously? I barely used Windows 7, just like I barely use Windows 10. Less, actually. It's like you don't know me at all.
-
@Gąska editions other than Home have group policy locally is all.
-
@pie_flavor Home does too, except it's unmodifiable and unbrowsable. Anyway, the point is that whenever you say that Microsoft has a documented official way to disable updates forever, you're wrong and have always been wrong, and "random other hacks people have found" work 1000x better than everything you've ever posted (tested empirically).

Not just at Microsoft; other developers make Control Panels too and those would need to be migrated to Settings panels. I'm sure they'll get that done any day now.

Windows 10 has been out for 4 years. They could easily have said "Oh BTW this old control panel dies in 2 years" at the start and killed everything that doesn't update by now.

Is there a way for third-party apps to integrate into Settings? Haven't looked into it, but my initial impulse is "Fuck no!"

There's one mentioned in the driver development docs. I haven't gone looking for non-driver advice but my guess is that they'd want you to move it to a regular application.

Small correction - I just remembered the new, "hidden behind several layers of random categories"-style Control Panel has been since Windows XP. And it was much worse than in W7.

It sucks, but it's still better than "you can no longer change this setting, because MS is too lazy to add it to the new control panel". You didn't really think removing the old control panel would entice them to improve the new one, right?

Well part of my whole "get rid of the old one" scheme involved putting it in the new one. Maybe at the cost of less pointless fiddling or fewer unnecessary 3D versions of Paint.

Oh, yes, it's always been garbage. And perhaps the thing that looks like the normal "change how this directory looks...details or previews" has always been this perverse, by adding a, "no, actually change what's actually displayed." It's all fucked up.

Fuckin' magic!
Also, Windows has trouble restarting itself if the Unexpected Shutdown Tracker thing is enabled (which apparently it is by default on Windows Server).
-
@Tsaukpaetra no, I mean I had an issue where Explorer (all windows of it) and the stuff that used it like the start menu would just crash and restart. Sometimes it would be hung instead but it'd crash and restart as soon as I opened the start menu. Sometimes it'd steal the focus of games. But now it's gone!

@pie_flavor it's good to know "problems with Windows 10 that don't happen on the other Earth" is a two-way street.
