And since we're talking about a car accumulator...
And lead acid accs specifically.

@PleegWat said in Driving Anti-Patterns - Necro Edition:
@hungrier Isn't a fully charged lead-acid something like 13.6V?
That seems about right. I know my truck won't even start at 12V, and when the alternator's running, the electrical system's usually at about 14V (unless it's cold and the fuel filter heater's still running, then it's all the way down at 11V and I have lots of flashing warning lights until the heater kicks off).

That's a big voltage drop, which implies a lot of current.
TIL. I didn't even know a fuel filter heater is a thing.

They aren't typical. I have an aftermarket FASS lift pump which is an auxiliary fuel pump with an auxiliary fuel filter and water separator, and it has a heater to reduce the chances of fuel gelling up in the filters. Mostly, to increase fuel injector lifetime because I have a Duramax LB7 which is notorious for injector failure which I've been through twice already and costs an arm and a leg to repair.
I don't know how much current the heater draws, but consider that this truck has two 800 CCA batteries and a 130 amp alternator and still drops the system to 11V...

Okay, I know it snowed last night, and I understand driving slow when the roads are bad. But why, oh why, would anyone go 15 mph in a 45 zone when the street's already been cleared of snow and there's nobody in front of you! And I couldn't pass because of all the 50 mph traffic in the left lane.

@mott555 solution: slow down enough to properly distance yourself for a gun-merge, await a gap, and BLAST OFF TO VICTORY!!!

The problem with that is my vehicle weighs 7,000 pounds and has around 2 seconds worth of turbo lag before it builds up any reasonable torque...

@mott555 said in Driving Anti-Patterns - Necro Edition:
lag before it builds up
Ah, so you'll need about 960 feet then?

@boomzilla That just raises more questions...

@TimeBandit Doesn't look like that's it - that looks like the plane is literally on a cross street...

@dcon Gibraltar was the first place I thought of too (since it's the only place I know of with a level crossing of road and runway) but this clip doesn't match streetview.

@boomzilla I just read the twitter comments one that - (but still no clue where it is)

Gibraltar also uses Euro-style registration plates on cars.

Earlier today I drove behind a car that, presumably due to some fascinating electrical fault, turned off the rear lights when braking. The central brake light would come on and every other light in the rear turned off. Great thing to see when it's dark and raining, it took me a sec to figure out what's going on.
Check your fucking brake lights once in a while, kids - or I'll come to your house and shove a bunch of lightbulbs up your colon.
-
@blek said in Driving Anti-Patterns - Necro Edition:

Here, that car is considered unfit for the road and would get towed.
The central brake light is actually not required by law, so if it's the only one working, it's the same as if none of them are working. And you need at least one working brake light.
And no, I never got my car towed because of that, but I know someone who did
-
@TimeBandit I think it's the same, here but noone really cares. This isn't that easy to spot unless you end up right behind a car like that by chance - and cops routinely ignore cars with one or both front lights off so there's no chance they'd bother with brake lights.
-
@blek Unless the cop car (or some VIP's car) is right behind and ends up ramming them because of the fucked brake lights. At that point, they're going to take action because they're going to be proper riled.

The more dangerous variant I saw some time ago on our Autobahn - the brake lights were always on.
I was really tempted to call the police on that one, considering that this idiot was also doing 130.

I got rightfully horned at when I my head lights stopped working. In my defense it was still daylight when I began the trip, it was 5 minutes past sunset, and I was already arriving at my destination.

@Rhywden Oh yeah, I've seen that too once or twice. Also reversing lights stuck on in a 80 km/h zone, that one almost gave me a heart attack.
Also I think Ford Focus mk2 has clear tailvloghts and you have to use red bulbs or something like that, and idiots don't understand that and use clear ones. I've seen more than one with white taillights, and it's always the same model.

When I was still doing youth work I regularly had to drive a really old Mercedes Sprinter where the gearbox wasn't that great anymore. Quite often I had to use the third gear to start off at a traffic light because finding 1st and 2nd gear was ... time consuming (at least from neutral - once you had found the gear, down and up shifting worked fine).
Until I found the solution: Simply put the gear into reverse (that was one easily found!) and then ram the gear stick backwards - worked every time!
Might not have been such a great thing for the people behind me, though.
-
@Rhywden Why not just fix the gearbox? I thought you were German
-
@hungrier
Maybe he found it more humorous to flash his reverse lights at the schmucks behind him.

IIRC, that fault is caused by bad grounding, due to corrosion or poor electrical contacts. It's not that rare ; I've seen more than one car with this symptom (usually a less severe form, where the lights dim instead of turning off completely).

@boomzilla honestly, how the fuck do you crash like that by braking? I just don't get it.
-
@Carnage said in Driving Anti-Patterns - Necro Edition:

By overreacting
-
@Carnage
(1) Brake and veer a little left because you're concerned the space in front of you is about to be subject to a violation of the laws of physics
(2) Your left side tires veer onto the rumble strip or the stone shoulder and your car's handling gets funkier. Especially with a stone shoulder, a lot of those will effectively "grab" your car and cause it to at least feel like it's steering even more heavily into the ditch
(3) React reflexively and whip the steering wheel back to the right
(4) Repeat oversteering reactions until you lose enough control that the car starts sliding toward its inexorable doom
(5) ???
(6) Your insurance company will PROFIT! for many many upcoming premium payments
-
You forgot:
(0) Be a bad driver who thinks tailgating is fine
-
@Zerosquare Let's have another "which is worse, tailgating or driving slowly in the left lane" debate. That would be fun.

I think the fine for tailgating is higher than the left lane turdmunchery fine, so tailgating is considered worse by the law. The fine for passing on the right side is also higher than turdmunchery in the left lanes. Around these parts, most people just deal with it by passing on the right.
