Overheard by my wife-- at a meeting-- about analyzing student results-- said by a brown-nose climber reading off a powerpoint:
"when you're doing your data analysis stop worrying about being so quantitative"

My snickering was covered by the outright sarcastic laughter of the person reading out the email.

I am not able rightly to apprehend the kind of confusion of ideas that could provoke such a question.

This is my most favourite quote and I use it regularly. Unfortunately I am regularly subjected to situations where it is appropriate.

I've always like this quote, too, though I've never been certain if the was on the speakers' parts or on Charles'. Were I asked something like that today, I would be inclined to think the person was being sarcastic, but there's always the possibility that it was asked in earnest. Because humans.
My guess is, the one who asked it the first time meant it seriously, but that when Babbage dismissed the question as idiotic, some wag overheard it and figured it was good heckling material.

Between my wife and her father . Her father sometimes gets kinda funny about things, especially anything even remotely adjacent to "those damn Liberals".
(talking about her pregnancy, and some of the medical complications and regular testing)
(Constantly sidetracking about every little thing wrong with him, including an extremely non-serious cancer that's been in remission for over a year and will likely never come back)
(trying to get back on topic). So this Saturday I have to go for that annoying hour long test for Gestational Diabetes.
What's that?
A test for-- gestational diabetes. They have you fast, give you a sugary drink, then test for diabetes afterwards. It's something they do for pregnant women.
What? I was never offered that test during my treatment. The damn Liberal government is always unfairly prioritizing women's health because of activists.
(literally makes the face) ......... gestational diabetes ONLY effects pregnant women. You're neither.

Are you saying that gestational diabetes can make women get pregnant, or that it could potentially make anyone into a pregnant woman?
I was under the impression that fucking was the former and the latter was literally un-possible.

I don't think it's quite as bad as that. The former was due to not having a clear understanding of how the Promotion Tracker works. (URL's with a marker, etc.) The questioner may have wondered if it was just a data analysis tool.
The Babbage one seemed to have no understanding of the most fundamental grasp of how a computer works. What makes it most amusing is that the questioner thought it was a gotcha. The modern equivalent would be, "Then why are apes still around?"
