How To Demoralize Employees: A DIY Guide for Terrible Companies
-
Worked until 8PM on Wednesdays, and no one noticed.Left at 3PM on Friday, and everybody loses their minds.
Realized that they were more concerned on the image, than the accomplishments.
Shoulda worked late on a Friday once in a while. "Xaade's leaving eaaaaaarly", they whine. "It's 5:30 and he's still here. What are you talking about?" Tends to shut them up.
Of course I take a more jaundiced view these days, after hearing that
bill collectorsAR types were jealous that I had two monitors. Fuck you, I actually use them both.
-
Yeah - if all work's getting done then I can turn up when I want and go home when I want (and the boss wouldn't really know anyway).
Ugh. Where I work now, the boss is one of these 80 year old types who's still moving as fast as his frame will allow him, and doesn't believe in new-fangled stuff like that. If you're not in a desk at the office from 8-5, you must not be working.
-
I wouldn't be surprised if, if you asked, you found out he was planning on leaving.
+1
Oh, and FRIST THOUSANDTH POST!!!

Coworker #1: Working from home to avoid the distractions (namely, our account managers and Coworker #2).
Coworker #2: Working from home "because of the snow". (It's all of a single inch you pussy!)
Coworker #3: Out sick.
Coworker #4: No-call, no-show.
Coworker #5: Taking the 4-midnight shift today.
Coworker #6: Working off-site.Room: ALL TO MYSELF. 😂
I don't think that I took a single day off because of snow in the 4.5 years that I worked in Rhode Island.

wondering if it is feasible to sell a million dollar view of the pacific coastline.
not the building or anything mind you, just the view.
You saw the webcam.

Most of us (the Win-devs)* are in-office. I like the easy in-person communication and the commute's not bad (compared to my old one). We can WFH.
* except the 2 in Boston. They only make the commute 1-2 times a year. CA is a little far...
oh hai, Boston to Cali. I know nothing about this.

My last place told me to stop skipping lunch because people didn't like that I was coming in at 8:30 and leaving at 4:45
The EU says I can't skip lunch. I have to record at least half an hour's break in addition to the hours I'm actually expected to work. In theory, employers can't demand anyone goes without a lunch break, which is all well and good.
In practice, you have to have half an hour 'off the clock', but the EU doesn't know or care whether you're actually getting a break in that time. If you need to work through your lunch break you'll be expected by your employer to work through your lunch break, but you can't count it towards your required hours, and if you're paid by the hour or get paid for overtime it'll be unpaid.
[I posted this already, definitely, I remember seeing it on the bottom of the thread, but Discourse appears to have eaten it]

I dealt with chronic pain for a long while
Did you get it sorted with chiropractic?
-
Aye, but that want what I meant. :-P
-
Wow, this thread went to TDWTF: After Hours
-
Massive reconfiguration of the continuous delivery system?Oh, that'll be no big deal. Just do it. In addition to your 40 hours of meetings and sysadmin duties. Why don't you write more code? You don't do much of that for an alleged senior developer.
Fuck this place. So fucking hard.
-
Union fixed unfair work practices by creating unfair work practices.
-
Hey, how about you coordinate a training opportunity for me to mentor the junior developers.
Surely you can fit that in between your meetings.
Maybe a training session for the managers to learn to correctly estimate work?
No time? And you haven't even gotten to do your project risk forecasts. No wonder we are always behind budget. What do you managers do all day
-
What do you managers do all day
I have no idea what mine does all day. Nothing that we need him to.
-
They kiss ass professionally.
-
Yes. Another of the more major annoyances with him.
Bullshitting stakeholders and grown ups just delays them seeing problems. Except it makes him, and by extension us, look like incompetent pricks.
-
What do you managers do all day
Previous team leader was promoted into that position - from me and my peers' group - with the expectation that the team leader part of his rôle would not be a substantial proportion of his work week, and he would continue to contribute to the pool of work we were responsible for.
That did not turn out to be the case - and with hindsight I'm sorta glad I didn't get the job.
-
I'm a bit surprised that no other pedant has yet pointed out that that image is flipped.
-
I don't think that I took a single day off because of snow in the 4.5 years that I worked in Rhode Island.
Isn't everything in that State walking distance?
-
Rhode Island. It's bigger than Luxembourg, but only just!
-
Rhode Island. It isn't even an island, fer cryin' out loud.
-
-
Aye, but that want what I meant. :-P
The temp didn't quite hit 70F today, but we didn't have any accumulation. My brother in MA did get over 30 inches of snow, though.
-
Isn't everything in that State walking distance?
Almost. The joke about Rhode Island is that you can't get lost. You drive for 45 minutes, and you either hit another state or water. I've driven from eastern CT to MA on the other side of RI in that time.
-
I hadn't even noticed that.
-
depends on where you measure it here, thanks to the wind and drifting. parts of the yard got 0 inches and one very unlucky part of the back appears to be about 70 inches.
very fluffy snow...
-
The temp didn't quite hit 70F today
That's OK, it crossed the line yesterday and probably will again today in the next hour--in fact, the forecast calls for the temp to hit 80.

62F here right now, on the coast. A few clouds on the horizon, which for me, is the Pacific. A bit cool, but I'm wearing long sleeves. Much better than 80F, though.

My brother's car was buried on one side and clear on the other three.
-
reverse the burried and unburried and you got my car this morning.

It's a Prius, I have no sympathy for it.
-
If less people drove Priuses then global warming would be worse and it would snow less.
Ergo - it's all the fault of people who drive Priuses.
-

since the back was the side that was clear i just cleared the drivers door, got in, turned it on and backed out of the drift. once the car was clear it was but the work of a minute to clear the rest of the snow from the car before i could drive to work.
i fail to see a problem with my choice of car. i know some SUVs that couldn't have done what i did this morning!

How to Demoralize Employees: let them know about @chubertdev's new job.
Congrats.
EDIT: also, here the temp has gone up.... to 30F.

Congrats.
I sent @accalia a pic from our balcony, I'm pretty sure that she's plotting a special kinda of revenge for me right now.

not revenge per say.... i just want to steal that view for myself and leave you with a view of.... oh i don't know the Gobi desert
-

Can't see why.
30" of fluffy snow would be excellent.
Taking the chance on 30" turning into ice, or 4' of snow or worse... not so much.
I like Winter...
-

Much better than we ever get here then. Round here snow rarely, if ever reaches 5 cm, but if it's freezing you'll be de-icing your car for 15 minutes before you can leave.
-

Got me beat. We're only getting up to 75. But then, we're supposed to have the beginnings of a storm system moving in: rain the next three days!
-
-
Oooooh!
Where?
-
San Diego. On clear days in the winter, you can see the mountains to the
westeast and to thenorthwestnortheast, often with snow on them.
-
TIL.
Discourse: not descriptive enough? Take a hike.

Which way, now?
-
Which way, now?
Away from the coast, as well as north and away from the coast. I always think of that as west, growing up on the east coast.

I do exactly the opposite, having done the opposite. Which is why I was so amused.

So when you travel somewhere do you just hold the compass upside-down?
Sorry but this idiot can't be dismissed with a mere smiley.

What will it take to dismiss you, then?
-
Two mere smileys.

No, I don't travel with a compass.
