That's handlebars "helper". Basically a function that vomits out some html (not exactly html, but close enough). topic.like_count is argument. It probably does the heatmap coloring or something.
I know that bit. I use Mustache for my project, and I have studied Handlebars, but gave up on it since I needed a serverside implementation as well. Because, you know, I care about graceful degradation.
And, to be a pedantic dickweed, I seem to remember Sam mentioning HTMLBars.
What I can't figure out is where it gets rendered. On further thinking, it might be the likes column, but that got killed, no?

But you could use the number of likes in a bug topic to see how severe or high of a priority a bug is for the users and devs and work the list sorting by li— oh.
Somewhere on meta.d I pointed out how they fucked themselves over. I don't think they ever responded, which is just another example of how they could not apply any sort of management discipline to the project even if they wanted to.

Though anyone familiar with "/top" knows that it's not really any better at judging priority of a bug than likes in the bug's topic. So...I guess I'll give the point to Jeff for coming up with multiple ways to be dysfunctional.

In node.js, I'm compiling all my templates server-side in a grunt step and serving them as javascript functions. Not sure if you can do that in PHP or Rails.
HTMLBars is a new implementation of handlebars that's expected to speed things up. Should be coming in a few months. In short:
Handlebars:
template --(handlebars)--> html string --(browser)--> DOM
HTMLBars:template --(HTMLBars)--> DOM

Indeed they are.Here's my take on it, which comes from being one of the first people to put a site live using RoR which wasn't out of 37signals (went live when rails was v0.12 or so, and is still running).
Firstly, DHH is a total cockend. You think <a @codingwhore is bad, DHH makes him look like Jesus. A total wanker who managed, by accident, to have one good idea that was (at least originally) picked up by people far more technologically capable than he.
Secondly, Ruby is a great language, but crippled by a poor runtime. I wrote a Rails-based system dealing with SMS-based micropayments, which was capable of handling thousands of transactions per second on what Jeff would consider "minimal" hardware; it was only possible by implementing a heavily hacked ruby interpreter (and removing certain little used features of Rails itself).
Thridly, Rails itself is great. As long as you stay away from anyone involved in it or any of the hipster wanker culture it seems to engender.
Rails is almost the right way of developing a web platform, developed by almost the right people in a language that comes close to being the right one.

I liked rails enough to stick with it, let's put it that way. It really is pretty good. On the other hand, I am (or was) regarded with about as much appreciation by the "rails community" (with a few exceptions) as we here are by those at meta.d.

Yes he is. I have had the displeasure of meeting him in person, and he is even more self-promoting and egotistical in person than he is on the internets.

There is the one good thing about him. He is a total bellend, but he is a good businessman. He and his team have written several good books that should almost be required reading for those in forward-facing tech roles. There is a LOT of good information in them.
Secondly, Ruby is a great language, but crippled by a poor runtime.
The interpreter is getting better due to the efforts of some of the big dogs that are still using it. The front end of Twitter (I hate that name so much that even typing that nonsense irks me) was still RoR last I heard, but the backend where the heavy lifting takes place had to be replaced by Scala.
Ruby made some big steps when they went from 1.8 to 1.9, but the performance is still pretty shit.

Admittedly, that is ~4 years old, but for certain functions it takes over an hour to do what PHP can do in 20 minutes, or C languages can do in a touch over 30 seconds. That is an edgecase, but still.

I apologize. I made a mistake. That $20m investment was in 2021 not 2020. It's actually kinda annoying how often I get emails from VCs wanting to invest in Discourse, even this week. Regardless, it's a compliment to be noticed, and I always respond to these inquiries in a kind, respectful way because that's how people should always communicate with each other.

The thing is, people should communicate respectfully. Then again, people shouldn't go around parading themselves like peacocks asserting that they know best in front of a crowd of people who know themselves better than an outsider knows them...
Respect is very much a two way street. Some initial is offered, the rest is earned and if you treat a group disrespectfully, expect it visited upon you a thousandfold.

If actual Jeff, it’s a weird humblebrag/flex that just proves this audience has not been understood because it’s not the sort of thing that would impress us, nor does it fit the nuance of this community, which was this community’s original basic complaint: Jeff did (does?) not understand WTDWTF and yet tried to shape it in his own image. WTDWTF are exactly the wrong crowd to be shaped without consent, and boy did they refuse consent.
If troll impersonator, it’s still a weird humblebrag but in the form of something real Jeff might actually say, in the exact form of applied misunderstanding, and thus successful trolling.
