Time to go visit the local Best Buy and see if there are any modern mid-range graphics cards I can buy without going broke.
Depending on what "going broke" means, you probably want to look at a 950 or 960.

I forgot you can't tell my gender. Thankfully, neither can I, but the typical default is male, no?

Don't wager with people who can stack the deck. ;)

Status****strong text: Decided to test my new fiber internet connection since I don't trust the modem's report that I'm getting 1Gbps down and up. The results are in:

Well, down is basically what I'm paying for, but up is more than double what my plan says I should be getting. How dare they!
I wonder what it would take to convince my wife to upgrade to 100Mb or 1Gb ...

This summer Time Warner upgraded me from 20Mb to 100 for free.
Well, nominally. You know how it is, it seems like every 6 months the bill goes up $5 without them bothering to tell you.
-
6 months the bill goes up $5
I thought it was $6 immediately for the first 6 months, then the rest of the $45 after that?
-
I thought it was $6 every 12 seconds for the first 11 seconds, followed by a duck, a cat, and a lizard for the next month, and then $45 if they ever catch you using it.

Like Virgin Media here who announced 2 months ago that they're increasing everyone's broadband speeds for free and just announced a price rise.
-
Wow you Lunix people need to catch up to journaling filesystems.
The NTFS implementation on Linux suck, and I don't expect Microsoft is gonna make one for us. But they have been breaking some traditions with opensource, who knows.
TRWTF with filesystems is my Android phone not supporting ext3 on sd cards. Google?
Windows should support at least one good opensource filesystem, so we can interoperate better. But they need to milk that FAT patents.

STATUS i'VE BROKEN THE CAPS LOCK ON MY KEYBOARD! i'LL HAVE TO USE ONE OF IGGY DELL KEYBOARDS NOW!
*edit just IT fucking with me after leaving my computer unattended.
-
Why would you have a different up and download rate on fiber. Here all up and download rates are equal except for cable.

In the UK, any price rise during a contract can be used as grounds to terminate your contract with no early cancellation fees.

Yes, I doubt most people care enough to cancel, it's just stupid to tell customers they're getting something for free and then charge them more for it. 4 months after the last time when every XL customer got "free BT Sports Europe" and charged £3 extra. Even the ones who didn't want BT Sport Europe.

I really want to plug a UPS in to itself, to see what will happen. They can't have that many warning labels about it unless something spectacular would occur.
The tiny desk one I tried was really boring, it just shut-down beeping showing overload until reset.
Need to try it on something with some serious grunt like work's Symmetra. Although anything that can stand the start-up surge will probably just cycle on and off which is boring too.

STATUS: MURDER ALL THE THINGS!!!
... is this week nearly over now?

Will we be still able to change topic titles with nodebb? Can we has it?
-
I don't know... Why are you asking me? WHAT IS HAPPENING?
-
Or that one episode of ALF where they bring back the cast of Gilligan's Island.
There's also an episode of Baywatch where they bring back some of the cast. And do a crossover. Complete with laugh track.
-
Come over to the dark side, Jarry. We have ZFS, Dtrace, Clang and LLDB in the default install and huge unix beards.

I don't know... Why are you asking me? WHAT IS HAPPENING?
I think I triggered something here

I thought it was $6 immediately for the first 6 months, then the rest of the $45 after that?
Snort. No, if they did that, a lot more people would cut the cord.
I had my modem replaced a while back and they noticed I was paying for a plan where they were supposed to charge me, so they started charging rent. Then they also started charging extra for the wifi that comes with the modem/router. I'm just too lazy/busy to go out and buy one to replace it.
Other than that my bill's only gone up a few bucks in the last couple of years.
-
. is this week nearly over now?
For various definitions of the words "nearly" and 'week', yes.
-
I really want to plug a UPS in to itself, to see what will happen. They can't have that many warning labels about it unless something spectacular would occur.
I'm not sure I'd fancy trying it on the big motherfuckers we have in the room next to where I sit. Each one's 3/4 the size of a full rack, with a full rack-sized auxiliary battery each.
-
Yes mistress Anthony Tsaukpaetra of Unimatrix 08, I shall appear as summoned.
Hmmm... If I change my display name to @sockbot, will I cause an infinite loop and crash Discourse?

Weren't those the ones that were always beeping?

Correct. Thankfully, that's been fixed.

Lady, you I like. Maybe I should see if that show is any good.
It is one of the best shows ever. The final seasons weaken a bit when they forced out the original writer/creator, but are still worth watching.
They just announced a deal with (I think) Netflix to do a few reunion movies, with the original writer/creator, and cast. Yay!
-
Why would you have a different up and download rate on fiber. Here all up and download rates are equal except for cable.
Because my ISP said so. It's a home connection, they're probably doing it to discourage self hosting.
-
FTTN and similar GPON services are, by technical design, asymmetric services. The typical GPON transceiver is set up to allow for 2x download compared to upload.
I suspect it's a holdover from the technical setup of Cable internet, and the realization that home users don't really care to upload much traffic, as long as their cat videos and Netflix just work when they press the button, so designers are intentionally focusing on maximizing download on a physical line, even at the potential expense of wildly asymmetric links.
-
the realization that home users don't really care to upload much traffic
That's even true, in aggregate. Most home users really do download far more than they upload. There are exceptions, but as long as they're just that, the assumption still works.

Enjoy your badger, you SOB. I snortlaughed reading that and sprayed my monitor.

You've never accidentally typed "shitdown" before?
I do it all the time...

I almost never type shutdown.

You've never typed "shitdown" accidentally?
Probably not, but I'm also not in the habit of shutting down computers that way.
