@Jaloopa Intriguing. Someone involved in British government who isn't an authoritarian?
I take it he was forced out.
-
@Weng said in The Official Status Thread:

Yeah. He was the science advisor on the Advisory Panel for the Misuse of Drugs and was fired when he showed that alcohol and tobacco cause more total harm than heroin and cannabis.

Tell them flat out that you will take a decision to implement anything involving Shillfarce as a de facto termination, and if you are a manager yourself, extend that to your entire team.

Introduce him to TDWTF.
Pros:
You'll never have to find him something to do again.
He'll learn to avoid bad coding practices.Cons:
He'll never become productive.
His personality will be irreparably twisted.

We had a couple of chaps at work who were usualy 'ill' on Mondays. It got to the point where people would say 'where is [name]?' and get the response 'Latvian Monday'
I'm sure that's a ridiculous generalisation but it was funny.

Doesn't work. I show him stuff that's posted here (at least the stuff that's not beyond his computer knowledge or too off-color); trouble is, it's actually funny, so it's not a deterrent.

It matches the behaviour of all male Latvians I've encountered. Everyone east of the Baltic seems to use ethanol for blood…

This sort of thing is why I don't believe that having science funded by government instead of corporations leads to greater objectivity.

@antiquarian I don't know if the study was adjusted for percentage of users by population, but if not then It's especially absurd. Given the sheer numbers, there are going to be far, far more multi-pack smokers and hard-core alcoholics than pot smokers or heroin addicts. The latter (not just heroin users but non-prescription opiate addicts in general) are probably less than half a percent of the overall population, compared to maybe 5% each for pot smokers and heavy drinkers, and 15% or more for nicotine users in all categories (though most of those are cigarette smokers I would expect), with a certain overlap on each of those.

You are correct, but it looks like even if it wasn't adjusted, that's not why he was fired:
Explaining his dismissal of Nutt, Alan Johnson wrote in a letter to The Guardian, that "He was asked to go because he cannot be both a government adviser and a campaigner against government policy. [...] As for his comments about horse riding being more dangerous than ecstasy, which you quote with such reverence, it is of course a political rather than a scientific point."[37]

@antiquarian There's also driving "drunk" and driving drunk.
The legal limit is set at a point where many people who drink regularly (not a lot - just regularly) aren't detectably impaired.
Yep, most states are now at .08%. That is too low for almost anyone I know. You could have one beer with dinner and be over the limit, but not impaired at all.
Not sure what kind of beer you guys are having over there (evidence suggests coloured dishwater), but 500 ml of 5% beer will yield a BAC of 0.033% for a male weighing 85 kg.
Also considering that you'll lose roughly 0.01% BAC per hour...

@Weng said in The Official Status Thread:

Basically, yes. He who pays the piper calls the tune, and that applies whether it's government paying or a corporation.

@Rhywden With my dinner last night I had a 16% ABV IPA.
The pisswasser drinkers aren't worth discussing (and generally aren't drinking one, but entire six packs)

Status: Found out the baby's sex yesterday (ultrasounds are awesome). Now that we already have three girls, we're finally having a boy!
We told our daughters by making colored vanilla milkshakes with lids and clear straws. Our oldest (7) is super excited because she's been wanting a baby brother since we were expecting the second. The second (4) ended up crying for about 10 minutes because she doesn't want a baby brother (she's come to terms with it now). The youngest (2) was like "I got milkshake."
All told, it went over pretty well.
-
@abarker I wonder if "I got milkshake" works on adults, too.....

That's OK; we do, too. The VP (in general, not just the current one) is pretty much the appendix of the government; you only think of it when it's sick (in the VP's case, when the President is sick), and they're not happy thoughts.

They are when it comes to drunk driving, since they're the ones most likely to do it.
For the record, the typical 'premium' light lager in the US is between 4.5% (MGD) and 5.0% ABV (Bud and Coors), while 'lite' lagers (Bud Light, Coors Light, Miller Lite) dip down to around 4.1%.
That having been said, things like Nanny State (0.5%), Pilsner Urquell (4.4%), Black Cat (3.4%), and Guinness (4.1% - dry stouts in general are what would be called session beers today) show that the relationship between potency and flavor is greatly exaggerated.

@Tsaukpaetra If they can't even send out a simple email on schedule, how should I expect them to succeed at the more complicated task of printing and mailing real bills?
Also, despite that I'm only signed up for paperless billing, they usually mail me a physical bill anyway. Come to think of it, I haven't seen one of those in a while either.
USPS decided your mail needs to go the long way round. You should see those bills in another 6 months or so... Or whenever they clean behind the sorter.
