@Maciejasjmj The PiS are fucking amateurs. Both Orban and Erdogan managed to take control over their countries within the boundaries of their constitutions. Breaking the constitution to gain control (which is basically a coup from a legal POV) is an amateur move.
Meh, it's kind of a dodgy situation, and IANAL. Honestly I think they're shooting themselves in the foot, since absolute power means absolute responsibility, and when things inevitably to to shit they'll have no one to pin the blame on for preventing them from realizing their plans. And since painting themselves as tormented underdogs with their hands tied by some evil forces has been their major strategy for the last 10 years at least...
I say, let them take the court over. If they insist on blowing off their feet, the best the opposing parties could do is hand them a bigger gun.
I actually think this has been a problem of every ruling party since the very beginning, the fact that at some point people get angry and believe things have turned to shut and when they do it's time for a change. Let's face it, only two parties were able to go through two terms and when they did fall, they fell hard.
Nevertheless, pis has major advantage because there's no one strong enough on the right side who could leverage the anti-EU (or anti-European-integration) moods and the fear of Islam, that's going to be pretty fucking high if there's even one terrorist attack in Poland.
This all being said, we've lived through SLD and PO, so rodents and thieves, I don't think pis is more of a threat to our democracy than they were.

Nah! Can't be! Poland has a nationalistic government and is on the brink of destruction of the democratic system! God help us, I say! God help us!I am not saying that they are the root oft all evil, but what they are doing is pretty obviously breaking the law (in this case: constitution). Claiming that the highest court has to follow a law they just declared unconstitutional is just ridiculous.

Apples have SUGAR!!!!! Paper is approved by all diets. Except maybe Atkins, because it might have CARBS, but so does the Apple, so... that's a wash?

@all_users The point is, I thought one of the big conservative talking points was about local control, so why would a conservative be upset about Seattle exercising its right to local control?
So anything is good so long as it's local? That's what you take away from that sort of thing?
But actually, it is better if it's done by a city and not a state or the whole country, since it's easier for people to get away from it that way. Which falls under the idea of less bad is better than more bad.
-
@dkf said in Is Your Brain a Democrat or Republican?:
The problem with the Republicans currently is that they've got the some of the loonier factions in charge, particularly at the levels that select candidates to state legislatures (and by extension, to Congress).
Of course, I see the problem in exactly the opposite light. The only sane ones are the ones getting elected as Republicans to legislatures (well, there are some good governors, too).
@dkf said in Is Your Brain a Democrat or Republican?:
That's very dangerous because it encourages a demagogue to say that they'll get rid of all of that and do the things that are necessary because Congress won't and for them to be somewhat right, leaving someone in charge without a good way to remove them (as they're already not operating according to the current Constitution).
Dude, you're like 8 years late (give or take)! Obama has made almost exactly that argument. And who can forget Tom Friedman's waxing poetic over China's One Party Rule.

I think that's giving them too much credit.
-
Hmm... maybe.
I just find it often that someone associates less social laws as progressive, when it's really liberal. The progressive parts are the social engineering, like instead of no-gender bathrooms, simply letting people pick their bathroom to push normalizing abnormal things. Pressing that certain religions are peaceful, and other ones are threats because of social engineering opposition.
-
@xaade Fine, but this is just a bullshit internet survey based on some questionable correlations with fMRI results.

So it says I'm like 80% dem.
Because I don't get disgusted as easily.
Thing is, the questions are a bit off if that's what they're going for. Most of the questions were about mundane crap like stepping on worms, or touching dead bodies of cats/people/cremated ash/accident victims.
Thing is... it's my conservative leaning upbringing that makes me unaffected by such things. Living on a farm dead & gross things are a daily fact of life. And that hillbilly, backwoods, folksy stoicism is stereotypically conservative. When you imagine a gun toting, camo wearing, chew spittin' hillbilly... you don't think progressive liberal dem. And I sure as hell can assure you that neck ain't too bother by a dead body.
Of course... for republican conservatives, my fam is some progressive mother fuckers in their own right as well. I mean hell, I was raised atheist by these people. My father said stupid shit like "booga chil' ", but taught me it ain't right to judge no one you don't know just because of what you think based on their creed/race/sexuality. Rather you judge them on their actions.

There's more to politics than being liberal or conservative.

I'm on the fence about 'social sciences'... their studies seem to primarily be a bunch of polls and than applying those numbers to preconceived biases.
@lordofduct said in Is Your Brain a Democrat or Republican?:
My father said stupid shit like "booga chil'

phonetically 'buh-guh chie-el'
It's a racial slur. The idea being people from Africa lived in jungles, and went "ooga booga". A booga child being the offspring or descendants of said people.
It's a bit neck... probably not said by more civilized people.
Though my father didn't particularly use it about black people. But instead it was more like the contemporary use of 'fag'. Like 'fag' no longer means 'homosexual' in some groups (see southpark), to my dad 'booga chil' was just a lazy person. If he found us sitting in front of the boob tube, he'd call us a bunch of booga chil's, and kick us out of the house. It was rooted in racism (like fag is in gay bashing), but remained purely as a functional term.
-
@lordofduct said in Is Your Brain a Democrat or Republican?:
I'm on the fence about 'social sciences'...
Sometimes they have a point, but they're rarely capable of doing anything even vaguely predictive (in part because it was ferociously difficult to capture enough data of reasonable quality) and most habits over the past century in the general area have tended to focus on looking at very small scale stuff anyway, where one-off things confound everything horribly anyway. You're starting to see some larger studies that actually say grounded things now, but they're still mostly working close to the “well duh!” level (because of the low-hanging fruit effect) and most of the field is dismissive of the approach because it's so utterly different to what was previous practice.
I guess that there'll have to be changes by creating new disciplines that are little more than “Social Sciences on Social Media on teh Interwebzzzz!” to break past the old guard and then there'll be a long change-over time.
-
Sometimes I'm taken back when I have to explain the slang that is part of my upbringing that I think everyone just knows.
Another that took me off guard was the word "packey". Where I'm from in western mass and norther connecticut, we say "package store" instead of "liquor store", and "packey" for short.
I no longer live up there thoug, and down here in Florida I still say it all the time.
I'm out with a friend of mine, and I say "Oh, I gotta just stop in at duh packey real quick" and turn into the liquor store. I run in, grab a bottle of vodka, come back and continue on down the road.
She responds as I pull out of the plaza, "I thought you were stopping at the convenience store..."
"Huh? No, I said I was going to the packey, the liquor store."
"OHHHH, the packey is the liquor store!? All these years I thought you meant the convenience store."
"What?"
"Yeah, I thought you meant Paki... like Pakistani. For convenience store. I just assumed you were racist."
"WHAT? No... you're racist!"
-
@lordofduct Paki shop was a relatively common insulting term for a corner shop owned by peopel with brown skin in the UK for a long time. Your use of packey would be like offy here (for off license)
-
@Jaloopa said in Is Your Brain a Democrat or Republican?:
offy
bottle-o in Australia apparently ... because you know ... it's a shop and it sells ... bottles!
-
@Jaloopa - yeah, I guess that's what my friend thought I was saying. She's a bit of an anglophile, which would explain it.
I've heard similar off color names for it as well. Here in the states they usually are Indian references, rather than Pakistani references... probably because most Americans don't really care to differentiate between the two.
But yeah, I've heard dotties, dot heads, or just saying 'quik-e-mart' or 'one-stop' in a fake Indian accent.
-
@Luhmann - I can see that. We also say "bottle shop" in New England... Packey is just more popular, probably for brevity.
-
-
@lordofduct said in Is Your Brain a Democrat or Republican?:
"OHHHH, the packey is the liquor store!? All these years I thought you meant the convenience store."
Heh...where I grew up (SoCal) a liquor store was a convenience store.
-
@boomzilla - yeah, y'all just sell your booze in the grocery store and all.
Blew my fucking mind the first time I shopped in LA... just an aisle of liquor.
I come from Connecticut where you can't buy on the weekends, you had to go to special stores to buy it, only beer was in the grocery store, and it was usually covered by big tarps because it was only allowed to be sold at stupid hours like 2 to 6 pm monday through thursday or if someone slaughtered a goat to the booze gods of yore.
I thought Florida was crazy with it's booze sold until 4AM... but no 40's (dafuq florida???).
Then again... LA's night scene, totally weird. 2AM cutoff, and every bar sets their clocks like a half hour off, so really it's 130AM.
Thank god I don't live in Utah though... poor Utah.

Boomzilla's so far right that compared to him everybody's an extreme leftist. He gets angry is a city (exercising its generally-considered-conservative right of local control) decides to raise minimum wage for its citizens. Something that, until we had that discussion, I didn't even conceive of how anybody could object to that.
The truly crazy (and dangerous) far-right types--you're from Seattle, so think of Tim Eyman and you'll have a good idea--have an exceptionally narrow view of government. They reject the basic concept of "We the People ... do ordain and establish this Constitution", preferring an "Us vs. Them" worldview in which government is inherently a Them even though the Constitution defines it as Us.
Under this view, there is only one thing that government (Them) can do that private individuals (Us) can't do even better: the use of force, as embodied in policing powers and the military. (Exactly why this particular area is the one thing government can excel at is never really explained AFAIK.) Therefore, it's the job of government to use the coercive power that flows from the barrel of those guns to keep the peace, defend the citizens, suppress violent crime, and nothing else, since everything else can be handled better by Us.
Imposing onerous regulations (such as minimum wages) on honest businessmen just trying to make a living falls under the heading of "something else", therefore doing so is an abomination and raising the minimum wage even higher is just making things worse. If the employees want more money, they should work harder or find some way to get a better job without Them poking their noses into it!
