Yeah. It helps if the person you are fishing knows you are talking about. ;)
Although, I have to be amused that you bring this up in the middle of a conversation about stupid names for things in fanfic and how people have no clue what they mean without consulting Urban Dictionary.

-
This whole conversation brings a new meaning to the Dropkick Murphys track I'm Shipping Up to Boston.
-
@loopback0 And now of course I have to listen to it.

That was sort of the point. Slash fiction == Relationship Fanfics.
Which is an entirely different genre than slasher fiction

No it makes perfect sense. You'll slash your wrists open rather than read it.

That is true of all fanfic for me.

Actually, slash fiction is a subset of relationship fanfics
-
@Polygeekery But how else are you supposed to express your Bill Murray / Catwoman fantasy?
-
@RaceProUK Had no idea it was supposed to be same sex, I just thought it was representing the slash between the character names that always appears.
Because, you know, that makes sense.

Because, you know, that makes sense.Just imagine the slash as the penis going from one character into another.
That's how I keep it straight. Well.. sort of.
-

It's more common to use an
x
to separate the names from what I've seen, although that might be fanart as opposed to fanfics
-
@RaceProUK said in The Official Status Thread:
Yeah... I have no idea why it's called 'shipping'
Isn't shipping, you know, when you put two characters together in a relation_ship_?
Yay, MarkDerp. Again.

@FrostCat You really need to start reading to the ends of threads before replying :P

-shudder-
But my imagination is good enough that I could always think of Anne Hathaway as I fire off some knuckle children.

I looked it up and assumed you did that intentionally because I am the founder of the feast on the Guacamole thread.

Nothing in fanfic makes sense. Nothing.

I never knew I wanted this until I read this post.

Why not both?

Since the writers are all (heterosexual) teen girls, it's always boys on boys. I don't remember ever seeing a lesbian FF.

Status: the status thread is full of complete shit this morning.
And you just helped prove the point.
Does anyone want to write a fanfic about @blakeyrat living in a world with only Linux for a desktop OS?
-
@Polygeekery I would volunteer, but I don't write horror stories
-
@RaceProUK said in The Official Status Thread:

Damn. You might be the perfect candidate to write such a thing. Your frustrations could add depth to the end of the story where he smashes his computer and then commits Seppuku with a jagged shard of plastic.
-
@RaceProUK said in The Official Status Thread:

Fuck. Ok, I'm officially old now. That's just stupid.
-
@RaceProUK You should link that song about it. I assume you know the one. I once saw quite a good AMV of it, using Haruhi characters.

Oh they're out there. I don't make a point of seeking them out - more the opposite, in fact. But just off the top of my head when I used to read a lot of Discworld fanfic there was quite a lot of it with various pairings from Monstrous Regiment.
Also lesbian slash is referred to as 'femslash'. And straight pairings are 'het' (not hetslash, just het). In some communities slash &c makes up such a proportion of the fanon that it's considered the default, and non-pairing fics are specified as 'gen' (general, paradoxically).
-
Let me guess...more blakeycrying to get threads split?

I am going to blame him anyway.

If you're bored you can waste a whole afternoon looking up ship names in the Harry Potter fandom. For a long time people were deadset on naming them as if they were naval ships, like SS Guns and Handcuffs.

@RaceProUK I am unaware of a single one that can't be tracked back to either the verb (to put in place) or the noun (a collection of things) in a logical manner that would involve figuring out that "set" is actually short for... I don't know, I can't even think of a word that's actually unrelated to it that contains "set" at the beginning or at the end at the moment (I'm sure they exist though).
-
@Onyx said in Shipping ships (not a kancolle thread (yet?)):
But then you get relationship > ship > shipping. And my only thought is "So, you're sending characters X and Y... where? And why? And why is there a fucking discussion on whether it's appropriate for them to travel together?"
Can we track them? Is Customs duty payable? Will they be held up in quarantine, or seized as dangerous goods?
-

And then people in forums start using the word like anybody anywhere is expected to have some knowledge of the stupid new meaning, without even an tag to hint at WTF they're talking about

@JazzyJosh posted an affirmative post, @Tsaukpaetra made a jeffing request in a post, and I suffered while scrolling down the status thread because on-topic posts were hidden between ship posts.
And nobody on IRC protested when I mentioned that I was going to Jeff this.
Now stop being unreasonable.

@aliceif I am not disagreeing with the jeffing. Also, thanks for letting me know that a post that says 'Agreed' is just as acceptable as a post that's petulant screaming.

Is it really surprising? I mean, how many possible pairings are there between major characters in that book that aren't two females?
I also may be imagining it and I'm not going to go and look but I could swear I've come across some Sally/Angua.

@RaceProUK said in Shipping ships (not a kancolle thread (yet?)):

You do know a lot about those.
-
@CarrieVS It's more that they feel the need to do this with Diskworld more than which characters they choose. But I guess not really. It's part of the Rules, after all.
-
@Magus It's a surprise to you that fanfic writers feel the need to write romantic and/or erotic fics in any fanon? YMBNH
Don't get me wrong, Discworld has quite a good fanon in my experience, a decent sprinkling of talented writers who put a lot of effort in (and some of whom write quite good romantic fics, actually). But every pairing in every fictional universe plus most of the crossover pairings you could imagine has been written by someone.
-
@CarrieVS Like I said, it's a well known Rule.
