Shipping ships (not a kancolle thread (yet?))

portmanteau
Speaking of awful portmanteaus, my advice to anyone is don't go nosing around Sonic fandom shipping; the awfulness of the portmanteaus will give you cancer. As will the awfulness of a lot of the shippings.

I assure you there was no danger of me doing that anyway.

I would rather have my toenails ripped off with a pair of rusty pliers.
I would also rather the same occur than to use the stupid hipster phrase "shipping".

Yeah... I have no idea why it's called 'shipping'

I either assumed that was a typo for something that made more sense or ignored it, since I have no idea what it might mean
-
@Jaloopa Google to the rescue!
...and the example usage is wrong; you don't 'ship for', you just 'ship'. That's a to go with the of it being an abbreviation.
Any more and I'll be
-
@RaceProUK I wonder what potentially useful or interesting piece of information that nugget has pushed out of my brain?

Inconvenient long works that are often used get shortened, deal with it.
-
@aliceif The problem is when they shorten it to a word that has a distinct and completely different word.

I couldn't care less that they shortened a word.

"I would fuck him!"
"Fuck that guy!"nothing ever makes sense but this appears very annoying. What's wrong with inventing new words. We already have words that mean things. We don't need to make the language more complicated by having multiple meanings for words.

Shipping goods doesn't necessarily involve ships.
-
@aliceif Shipping software almost never does
-
@DogsB I don't think that it's a fair comparison. In your example the word "fuck" is used both in a literal and metaphorical sense. In the
relationship -> ship
example you're shortening a well defined noun to a completely different noun.Worse yet, you then take that noun and turn it into a verb that is identical to another one but with a completely different meaning. So, you take
ship
and turn it intoshipping
, sosending somewhere on a ship
. This became a term for any sending of stuff anywhere later on, and I'm completely fine with that, that's language evolving and it's possible to infer the intent even if, in this case, English is not your first language. But then you get
relationship
>ship
>shipping
. And my only thought is "So, you're sending characters X and Y... where? And why? And why is there a fucking discussion on whether it's appropriate for them to travel together?"
-
@Onyx And then people in forums start using the word like anybody anywhere is expected to have some knowledge of the stupid new meaning, without even an <abbr> tag to hint at WTF they're talking about
-
@Onyx said in The Official Status Thread:

What happens in a ship's cabin stays in a ship's cabin.
-
@Onyx There's plenty of words that have multiple incompatible meanings e.g. 'to turf' can mean 'to lay down grass' or 'to forcibly remove a person from a location'; 'shipping' is no different in that respect
-
@Onyx said in The Official Status Thread:
And my only thought is
"You're relationshipping characters?"
GIBBERISH!
-
@RaceProUK I'd disagree. It's the growth out of a metaphorical use of "turf" as an area you "own" in some way, which kinda makes sense, that's where you'll lay down the grass, no? Also, I can imagine such evolution happening, and I'm sure it did happen, in any language.
On the other hand, the only relationship between "relationship" and "ship" is that one is a "short form" of another. It only works in English, and is almost as confusing as the damned rhyming slang is, especially to someone who's ESL.
-
@Onyx What about 'set'? That has something like 40 different meanings, most of which have nothing to do with each other.
-
@RaceProUK I am unaware of a single one that can't be tracked back to either the verb (to put in place) or the noun (a collection of things) in a logical manner that would involve figuring out that "set" is actually short for... I don't know, I can't even think of a word that's actually unrelated to it that contains "set" at the beginning or at the end at the moment (I'm sure they exist though).
-
-
@RaceProUK Solid things don't flow like fluids, therefore they are set in place.
-
@RaceProUK A liquid that no longer moves once it sets?
There's a logical connection that doesn't involve arbitrary contractions is all I'm saying.

Never heard that. British slang strikes again? Or is this an internet thing I'm not a part of (like this newfangled "shipping")?

Not slang so much, more just informal. But yeah, it's a Britishism.

Another example of this, but one that's been around long enough to be accepted, would be
fan
, originally a short form offanatic
, and nothing to do with the things that kill Koreans if they leave them on while they sleep

@Jaloopa Welcome to BORING DICTIONARY FORUM! Where people discuss words 24/7! And readers die from the tedium of it!
Seriously. Make a thread for that boring shit. I can't ignore the thread because this forum software is shitty, but at least I could "mark as read" it.
