Jeff gets it off his chest

I think Jeff was refering to some of you.

So, Jeff is becoming a Tim Burton villain?

I'll check back before I leave in about an hour.

Get blocked there too!

Maybe he's got a celebrity account...
-
Blocked, so he can't see you rather than banned (at least based on the vague understanding of twitter I have).
-
If only he were self-aware enough to realize our negativity was in response to his negativity. (a.k.a. he started it)
-
Make sure what you write is very reasonable on a surface reading. Hidden layers of meaning don't matter so much though; twitter's about as deep as a pop tart.
-
@codinghorror Don't be too aggressive with it. Everyone needs a balance of positive and negative input to keep things in check.
As seen in the screenshot immediately before the poll.

It is done.

So begins the jeffquisition.

I've started to realize that it's healthier to kick people out of the community once they've established an early pattern of negativity.
Is that why he and @sam self-banned themselves?
Jesus, I just wish I could go back in time and remove every single bug report we did on meta from existence. Let's see how far this hunk of shit will get once Atwood surrounds himself with yes-men and ass kissers.

Does Jeff not read his own blog?

LOL..Sea Lions.

Is this one of the TJL-moments I keep hearing about?

Jeff. Learning.
I see these two words and have no idea how they combine together in any meaningful sentence without a negative qualifier.
-
Jeff was responsible for us learning how to get banned from meta.d
Filed Under: There you go

I... don't see what you're alluding to. That blog post is kind of in agreement with what he did, which was "prevent any other discussion than a giant circlejerk by kicking out everybody you disagree with".
We weren't trolling there, for the most part. The whole goddamn meta was a place to express opinions on Discourse, and we did. It sucked then, and it sucks now.
I guess it's just easier to label people as villains in Jeff, Sam and Riking's mind than to actually sort out when they have a point and when they don't.
-
I've never quite understood that sea-lion comic completely. The analogy seems to break down when comparing twitter to ones own private kitchen and bedroom.
-
We weren't trolling there, for the most part.
We kind of were, at the beginning. Not really, but commenting on stuff that seemed kind of funny. Some posts got deleted. Eventually we noticed that and asked what the deal was. At which point we were told that we were outside of community standards and then we were on much better behavior.
Funny how telling people what they're doing wrong instead of just letting them keep on going can make a difference, huh?
-
It's also used by people around here who like to ignore supporting arguments that disagree with their own pro-sea lion opinions.
-
They wanted to keep the image professional, fine. I get it. No issue with that.
Except thanks to Atwood, they failed at it anyway, and the only criterion for showing the door to people became whether they're joking in agreement with Jeff, or disagreeing with him.
-

Totally agree. Which is one reason I changed the way I posted over there. Of course, my role here changed, too.
...and the only criterion for showing the door to people became whether they're joking in agreement with Jeff, or disagreeing with him.
I think in this case it was more than just what we did over there. I dunno. I guess I could see how having a group of people that fairly consistently disagreed with nearly everything you thought could get old. It's just that you never expect to find someone in Jeff's position with such poor taste and judgment.
-
I get it too, but the point is - they could have resolved it all in a much more professional way. Instead, Atwood decided to behave like a six year old, mostly to us, but to other users too.
Sam was okay to us, Riking was okay to us, so was the rest of the team even when we had our clashes. It was pretty much just Jeff that failed to keep the professional image up.
So, yeah. Even if you want somebody to fuck off, once you're pretty much the face of the software, you don't get to just kick them out without an explanation other than "I don't like their face".
-
I really don't care about this ordeal or about Discourse, but maybe this would have been better handled if they made a category under meta.d which was private to some users, sort of a lounge for bitching at it.
-
It's almost like Jeff has never heard of the Streisand Effect...
-
No Jeff, you're an idiot if you think the first action to take with a mildly annoying community is to kick them all.
A simple "hey stop doing that" warning would have been just as good, if he knew what "that" is.
-
Jeff is saying on Twitter that he's only just realised this is how you 'solve' this problem. Except his own blog post a year ago says the same thing, so how did he only just 'realise' this is the solution?
-
Because he is a narcissistic dickweed needing attention. Why do you keep forgetting that. Surely someone must have told you a year ago XD
-
Hey, just because somebody
posted something on his blogwas informed about something in the past doesn't mean he can't realize it again on this very day.... wait...Filed Under: You need to realize this (again and again)

Damn it, now I'm scrolling Jeff's twitter and my brain just keeps coming up with responses...

I don't quite understand what "Jeff Atwood (codinghorror)" wants to communicate there (namely, the "early pattern of negativity" part), but I think I can agree with the words (as soon as I know sufficiently definitely enough what they mean).
Does Jeff not read his own blog?
Probably he read his
Disclaimer: I have no idea what I'm talking about.
Jeff. Learning.
"Jeff learning" sounds like a Discopædia lemma.

Jesus, I just wish I could go back in time and remove every single bug report we did on meta from existence.
If only there was someone who, at the time, was advocating against wasting your valuable time assisting a sinking ship...

Too bad they don't give a shit about keeping their actions professional.
Sam's "automatically delete user data with no notification or consent" code makes every software developer everywhere in the world look bad. This is the exact kind of shit that makes people afraid of computers.
I mean, yeah. The parser's quirkly. Whoop-de-doo. As long as the preview is reasonably accurate, that's not a huge deal. Deleting people's shit without even telling them? No. No software developer should stand for that.
Like I said in the Discoblock or whatever it's called bug thread, the real problem isn't that Sam implemented it, the real problem is nobody on the Discourse team has the moral base to know that it's wrong.
Of course, they are all open source-y, so it's not like they give one millisecond of thought towards the user in the first place.
-
Sam was okay to us, Riking was okay to us, so was the rest of the team even when we had our clashes. It was pretty much just Jeff that failed to keep the professional image up.
No.
See my previous post.
The Discourse team implemented that shit "solution" to a non-problem. They do not deserve any software developer's respect. They deserve only disdain.
-
I'll just paste this here, from that blog entry:
As we build Discourse, I've discovered that I am deeply opposed to mute and block functions. I think that's because the whole concept of Discourse is that it is your house. And mute and ignore, while arguably unavoidable for large worldwide communities, are actively dangerous for smaller communities.
-
On the other hand, there is no way to delete a thread. Something that might be requested to be deleted for multiple legit reasons is undeletable. Tracked posts, which are effectively user's preferences, are deleted without question.
-

I think he means from the perspective of a user, not an admin moderating the community. Admins simply have the ability to kick someone out.

Huh. Just realized this was jeffed out of the status thread. Tee hee....

Positive. A chest burster grows up to be an Queen Alien-- which gets shit done, and is very fucking effective at doing it. So nothing****strong text like Jeff.
