According to the article, this bug was introduced while Microsoft was trying to fix a bug they introduced with the July 2019 Patch Tuesday, where they broke the sfc (system file checker) command.
Don't let @pie_flavor hear you, lest he come here to tell us that Microsoft should just remove SFC and Defender because everything is running just fine without them anyway.
What the fuck are you talking about? You're the one who advocates for tearing out sensible default programs just because you don't have a use for them.

Two 9 inch tablets stuck together is now being called a "PC".

When I launch an app it launches on the side of the device in which i invoked it
Is there a version of Windows that doesn't do this? Is there a version of any operating system that supports multiple displays and doesn't do this?

Well, at least that explains why such a massive company as Microsoft doesn’t have the resources available to fix bugs in basic things like zip files or paint or whatever.
-
@topspin By "fix Paint" do you mean changing it back to the XP version?

I honestly just didn’t remember what other basic things besides zip files we had this discussion about “nobody uses that, they don’t have the resources to fix these bugs”. So I just wrote paint because it was something along those lines.
-
@topspin Didn't they fix notepad as well, so it finally works with files that have normal line endings?

If you don't like either program that comes with Windows 10 nowadays (Paint 3D or MSPaint with Ribbons like in Windows 7) you're probably better off getting paint.net. That's been true going back to the later days of XP, though.
-
@Parody I don't mind the ribbons, but I do miss things like being able to pick the background colour by right-clicking on the colour palette, or having a hidden third colour available to use. Paint.net is good, but is missing some other stuff I like from Paint.

Yesterday I installed a free game from Epic Store called Minit. Of course it put a shortcut on desktop. Everything was fine. But today I boot my computer, and it has changed its icon to another game, Adventures of Shuggy. But when I open properties, it shows the correct icon. I tried copying the shortcut, and changing icon to something else then back, but neither was any help. I wanted to delete desktop's thumbs.db to force icon cache refresh, but couldn't find it anywhere. So I tried reboot.
Now it pretends to be MEGA Downloader.

That only helps if it's in the folder's cache, and the issue is with thumbnails for things like pictures and videos.
You're looking for IconCache.db

That link doesn't launch the Microsoft Store, but just dumps me to a Microsoft support page, which has 2 "Microsoft Store" links which just link to that page.
So, sometime in the last week, Microsoft finally made the links on the Microsoft support page go to their store collection for potential replacement apps. I know it was only that recent, because the week before last I checked and it still didn't.
They have 11 potential replacements:
Of them:
- Madefire: Specifically talks about comic books, not regular books.
- Cover: Also specifically talks about comic books.
- Comics++: Seeing a pattern?
- Kobo Books: Well hey, this one looks promising... shows it can read books and has a not overbearing looking storefront option. Though it can also do comics.
- Nextgen Reader: 1. it has a price tag. 2. it's a RSS reader.
- Audiobooks from Audible: Remember, this is a collection from a link talking about the removal of EPUB support in Edge.
- Wattpad: This is an oddity, because it sounds like this is more a fanfiction type reader than an ebook reader, but it also says it has a free trial while also claiming to be "free" in general.
- OverDrive: This one also looks like a real reader.
- Readiy: Feedly/RSS reader.
- Book Bazaar Reader: I actually found and tried this one before this.
- Comic Seer: End as we started, with comic book readers, and this one is also not free.
So, out of 11 options, there are 2, maybe 3, for EPUB files. But...
-
Kobo Books: Immediately requires an account. I assume that's because it's an app meant for their ebook storefront. Rules that one out, which is why I can't say if it is an EPUB option or not.
-
OverDrive: Seems to push heavily that it is a library ebook reader, since the initial screen wants to add a library (like, public library). I can load my own files in it, but one at a time, and it makes copies of them. Doesn't feel that great to use, as it has to load between "chapters" or whatever boundaries the books end up having.
-
Book Bazaar Reader: It has ads on the bookshelf screen and settings popup ($5 to dismiss for a year, $10 to dismiss forever). I can load in all my books "at once" and it kinda works pretty well, though it also makes it own copies of files loaded into it. Also, it shows that it was made for Windows 8 as every time it starts up it is fullscreen and the settings area is a small corner spot in the bottom right. Also, beyond the actual reading, the UI is, well, I'll just give an example, the "book information" screen:
Would it kill Microsoft to strip out the epub reader from Edge, tweak it a bit, and dump that on their app store?

Sorry, Microsoft only has 144,000 employees and only has revenue of $125 Billion a year.
They don't have the resources to do such a thing.

The way it organizes books and lets you check stuff out from the library makes no sense to me and infuriates me whenever I have to use it. Possibly OK if you're dealing with books you own as opposed to library stuff. The reader itself is fine, in my experience.

Long ago, in the days of yore.
Microsoft did bring about the Desktop.
It was a place for the user to organize their applications,
In a manner most pleasing and efficient. And for a time it was good.
But then, developers did discover,
They could place icons on the users desktop too.
This was used as a convenience,
to place icons there the user desired. And for a time it was good.
But then, managers did discover,
They could place icons on the users desktop too.
This was used to gain a bonus,
by placing ads instead of applications the user desired. And this the Desktop was lost forever.
For once one manager fell to evil,
The others soon followed.
The battle over control of the desktop raged long,
and there were no winners, only losers. And the User Lost most of all.
Thus it is decreed.
Reject this battlefield,
Hide it from thine sight.
Do this and be thou free. And, for a time, all will be good.
-
@Vixen
Or you could simply delete unwanted icons from the desktop, without going full-on Scorched Earth Tactics.

But then the icons return. for the managers decided in their wisdom to restore "missing" icons on app update or app launch.
For it is true, that the user has lost the most.
-
@Vixen said in WTF is happening with Windows 10? And nothing else:

That's not even the best part. I don't know why, but it doesn't feel right to have real applications there. Those I always open via Start menu. My desktop is only My Computer and Recycle Bin (neither of which I actually use), half dozen New Folders where I unpack archives, some Office documents I'm working on right now, and games. Lots and lots of games, almost none of which I'm actively playing. And the only app pinned to taskbar is Explorer.
It's as unproductive as can be. And yet I don't want it any other way. It just wouldn't be right.
-
I agree with @Vixen. Messy desktops are horrible, so I tend to uncheck the "put icon on desktop" checkbox whenever I encounter it.
Although
here is that Apple has introduced features to help people who put everything on the desktop. Like sorting and stacking documents by type. You have folders that are named "Documents" and "Pictures" and "Music". FUCKING USE THEM!
But then again, Apple are proud of having their desktops be a complete mess by pinning everything to the dock making it a bajillion icons long. They have awesome shortcuts, especially if using a touchpad, to bring up all installed apps with a single swipe/click so the desktop and dock can be left free of rarely used shortcuts. But no, in every promotional picture they stick ALL THE APPS in the fucking dock in a random order so the whole thing just looks ugly. And I weep every time I see my boss' desktop because he follows the Apple standard of having it all a big mess.
-
@Atazhaia: that way, they can sell bigger screens to people who use lots of applications.
-
Just gonna jump in here and mention that Stardock Fences is a thing..

I have all of the stuff I use regularly pinned to the dock, because then the icons stay in the same place rather than whichever random order I opened them in.
It's almost the full width of the screen.
-

I pin my commonly used stuff to the taskbar in Windows for the same reason. It's rare that there's not at least one window for each, except maybe explorer which I tend to close after doing file management stuff
