I didn't need to do anything network. In enhanced mode connection, you have to 'Show Options', go to the Local Resources tab, click 'More' and add the drive there. It then turns up on the desktop as a 'Shared Drive' (I think that was the name - I'm not in front of that machine now).
Did that and still get:
Fundamentally it seems like it should work, since I see a .clipboard folder in ~/shared-drives which is presumably doing the clipboard redirection.
Dunno. I'll figure it out sometime later. (Probably not.)

Not running a console cable to the install point for back door configuration:I did try the serial console, but the serial->USB adaptor wanted drivers from the web when plugged into the only machine still on the network it could reach
My original plan was to have a dedicated management port on a VRF, but this router only has one L3 port, all the other ones turned out to be L2 as they're on the internal switch.

It was actually easier the second time, I think half the problem is getting those stupid cage-nuts in the right place...while juggling heavy hardware.

Status: Started up a Windows VM. Everything normal. 5 minutes later a message box: “optional updates are not being delivered”, or something like that. Another 3 minutes and the background turns black, telling me that “This copy of Windows is not genuine” and another pop up with “the activation period has expired.” Well, the former is an obvious lie since it knows it is genuine.
Oh FFS Windows, fuck off.

Irritated that Slashdot silently turned off anonymous posting.
I get that they were fwightened by the El Paso shooting and wanted to distance themselves from scawy unapproved opinions. But with a 2016 poll showing the user base overwhelmingly in favor of anonymous posting, the least they could've done was come out with an announcement. Then again, this is the "tech" site that just couldn't figure out how to block the same ASCII swastika posted every week. I hope whatever jerk was doing that registers hundreds of throwaway accounts and keeps doing it.

@error give it a month.

@Zenith Stock trading fees are just stupid sometimes. It's actually cheaper to sell and rebuy than pay the "reorganization fee" for a reverse split. So here I am, thinking I'd like to hold because they might recover, but being pushed to join the folks selling and driving down share prices. Last two times this happened, I ragequit and sold off the shares I wound up with and the companies are now scraping the bottom of the Marianas Trench.

I'll believe it when there's a Kotlin shim for it. Or a Rust one. But anything JS is automatically garbage.

Yeah, I'm pondering what world it would make sense in to refinance for a double interest rate with a higher balance....

My car's been having AC issues, and I took it in. Looks like the compressor kit I had replaced about 2 years ago has failed. Again. And needs total replacement, which will cost $1.3-1.5k and a few days with a rental car (meaning paying that cost as well). This is now the 3rd year in a row it's had AC issues. I can pay the bill, but...
Best I can figure, the car's worth ~3k max as a trade-in. Pushing it up to "Perfect" quality would only increase the value by ~1k. Do I:
a) trade it in for a new(er) car, paying the monthly bite and the bigger insurance cost but getting something more reliable.
b) replace the compressor kit...and hope nothing else goes wrong for the next 120k miles. My home AC is also not working--still waiting for a tech to figure out how much that's gonna cost.

I'm not in , but in NL in most of the year you need car AC to combat humidity, and only a month or two per year against the heat.

House has a freon leak. If it's under warranty, that's $500 minimum (just for the freon + dye injection). If it's not....ouch.
How does that change the calculus? Not sure.

-
@Benjamin-Hall that’s a funny definition of under warranty.
-
@topspin said in The Official Status Thread:
@Benjamin-Hall that’s a funny definition of under warranty.
Parts warranty, not labor warranty. The freon's a consumable (theoretically). The part that might be under warranty is the condenser. Which runs ~$1500. And was just replaced about 2 years ago.

Car is basically worst-case (compared to my expectations, not globally. It's still safe).
- AC compressor. Estimates range from $900 - $1.3k and a full day+ of downtime (meaning a rental, which my insurance does not cover). This would have to be done relatively soon, because life without AC in Florida is...painful.
- Power steering leak, meaning that eventually the rack and pinion will need replacement. Another $1k, plus another day of downtime. This one can wait (as it's only a slow leak), but will get worse and if I tried to keep it for its full lifetime would need replacement within a few years.
- Marginal engine mounts, leading to roughness. Roughly another $800 and a few hours of downtime. This one isn't crucial.
Total cost to fix everything: ~3k. And if I'm planning to drive it across the country next year when I move, I'm not sure how I feel about doing it without fixing at least the power steering and the AC (although that later one would have to be ASAP).

This is true. However, while there's financial stability in the mortgage there's instability in the cost should things fail and the intangible increase in responsibility as opposed to just being able to log a service request and have someone else take care of it.
(I suppose that intangible isn't too important, you'd still make the service request, just of your contractor and you'd have to be home to coordinate. So it's mainly just the financial uncertainty.)
