If it's encrypted the data on the stolen server is likely safely locked away from theiving hands. The server itself isn't necessarily the only part worth protecting.

At the moment (apparently) the data isn't worth as much as the hardware...

True. I have a "list of passwords" that literally reads the same one for each and every account on the list. It's fucking ridiculous.
Edit: fuck!

I hope it's just a network issue!!!
It was. Apparently the NIC crashed at some point and never recovered. Rebooting fixed it.
I blame Edge for not doing network properly: I was trying to connect to the IPMI interface but it wouldn't for no apparent reason. Opening through Internet Explorer worked just fine. Now that I'm actually in the office, I suspect someone just bumped something, maybe. Sometime around 8:57p.

status FUCK! Trying to create a usable Ubuntu VM in Hyper-V. Could they make it any fucking harder.
Usable == able to connect using enhanced mode so I can share drives
Using the official Ubuntu ISO creates a VM, but I can't connect with enhanced mode. Tried lots of things from different google results. Yeah, fuck you too.
Using QuickCreate from MS - it works. But software updates are ... weird ... until you switch from the "Main Server" to the "US Server". And then the update process will hang in snapd. That google fix did work
#Edit /var/lib/snapd/seed/seed.yaml #Remove gnome-calculator gnome-characters gnome-logs gnome-system-monitor sudo snap abort --last=seed sudo systemctl restart snapd sudo snap tasks --last=seed #let update finish sudo snap install gnome-calculator gnome-characters gnome-logs gnome-system-monitor
Oh. Did I mention the default disk size MS creates is only 10G. Yeah, my file system ran out of space. Tried to expand the disk. But the system wouldn't come back up.
Let's see, I think I'm now installing for the 8th time today. This is finally the year of Linux - yeah, more like the day that feels like a year.

Yeah, I gave up and just used fuse to mount network shares. Funny permissions problems but it works and less frustrations than you're apparently having.

Status: This "Inateck docking station" is a piece of shit device.
Context: I got this on a whim on day, thinking if I ever had to "rapidly" back up the office computers it would be simple to use this somewhat-cheap dock.
Today has come, and I find (unsurprisingly) it's a piece of shit. Apparently, it always returns a serial number of 0s for both drives, no matter what.
This confuses FreeNAS because the "matching" serial numbers makes it believe it's a multi-path disk, and so tries to mount it as such.
After untangling that mess (and disabling multipath altogether for this session), I try again, and lo, since the drives have the "same" serial number it can't use both anyways.
Some tom-jiggery later and I've managed to schedule an import to occur on both drives, but since the import operation appears sequential there's no benefit to having multiple drives on the import queue anyways.
Not to mention that replugging a drive resets the whole interface, which would interrupt any communication/transfers going on anyways.I am assuredly going to review this unit...

Thought I was good. Turns out that editing the vdsk size before boot doesn't actually work. The disk is bigger, but the OS doesn't know that. (I guess the quick setup just pulls down a imaged disk - why the FUCK did MS think 10G was sufficient?) Google reveals black-magic with Parted Magic can extend the disk. Fuck it. I'll stick with the dual boot that's already set up. Trying to create a usable VM is beyond frustrating.

I've been able to get all my VMs to that point, but I don't think I've ever gotten shared drives to work. There might be some network component to it that I need to let through my firewall but I haven't investigated very deeply.

Today after work? Almost normal. Not ice cold, but probably about 90% function, up from what seemed to be like 40% at best. Still going to the shop on Monday for diagnosis and to see how much the (supposedly) leaking power steering boot/seal would be to fix. But I was expecting to spend the weekend with a car with no AC. Status: Apparently, the last time I booted my Windows To Go workspace was back in October of 2017, based on the position Chrome was in in the Status Thread.
Anyways, the reason I did so was to analyze a trash-picked convertible Toshiba Satellite laptop, that was apparently stuck in a Windows Update bootloop.
Well, boot it up and the first thing I notice...
There is no battery, but it is charged to 100%. I think it means "There is a battery, but it might as well not exist."
I believe the hard drive is also going bad because it took a half hour for it to try doing Windows Updates.
It has a program called "Flownet" installed in DosBox, and seems to be a student's. Last logged in June 2017. Think I should attempt to return it?
Edit: Cute bitches though/

Ah, what do you know, it can't update to 1903. Why?
Clearly, my drive is using UEFI, because that's how it was booted, but noooo, it's not actually compatible with UEFI. Or something.
I'll bet it's because I don't have an MSR partition, huh?

Or the computer actually didn't boot via UEFI (since apparently it's impossible to boot UEFI under MBR) at all, and Windows 1903 doesn't support MBR installs anymore?
Fuck the error messages are so vague and wrong I don't know why they bother sometimes...

Fuck it. I don't think I have any 64-bit computers I would want to boot the workspace on that don't boot via UEFI, and I do have the 32-bit workspace that's still on MBR. I converted it to GPT and...
Hurry up and wait, I guess.

.Interesting, I googled it to see what the
full
is about and found thatTip: FULL OUTER JOIN and FULL JOIN are the same.
which made me think exactly that: why isn't it synonymous to "outer join"? Because that's analogous to "inner join".
-
@topspin yeah, the SQL join syntax is super redundant.
JOIN ≡ INNER JOIN LEFT/RIGHT JOIN ≡ LEFT/RIGHT OUTER JOIN FULL JOIN ≡ FULL OUTER JOIN ≡ OUTER JOIN
-
@Gąska
OUTER JOIN
is so super redundant it isn't valid on Postgres, Oracle and MSSQL.

I've seen this in our own code, drop
Sleep()
's everywhere until all race conditions disappear. Is there a name for this antipattern?"The cocksucking motherfuck bullshit unpredictable machine learning antivirus is getting in the way" is usually WHY I end up directing a sleep be added.
-
@Weng I have my antivirus disabled. It likes to take exclusive locks on source files in the middle of compilation, which kills the build. And it also likes to block some of my own assemblies as "untrusted" or "unverifiable" even though they're all code-signed, some even with an expensive Extended Validation certificate.

I didn't need to do anything network. In enhanced mode connection, you have to 'Show Options', go to the Local Resources tab, click 'More' and add the drive there. It then turns up on the desktop as a 'Shared Drive' (I think that was the name - I'm not in front of that machine now).
