Status: Something in my home network is doing weird things. There's a cable from my router to a switch (connected to a NAS, my PC and other stuff in that room) from which another cable goes to another switch in the living room.
On Tuesday I turned on the PC and there was no internet. WLAN worked, though. The router is not the culprit. Replaced the cable from router to 1st switch - no dice. Replaced the switch? Same problems. Also, when I return to my original configuration it will work for a while. Only to crap out again. Not sure where that's coming from.

Wireshark? I've been using it today for an asymetrical routing issue that's kicking my arse. I have ACKs that vanish...somewhere, can't quite figure it out.

Well we haven’t had an “episode” in a while so what are you complaining about...

I still hate cardio day but now that I've started reading while on the elliptical, I at least look forward to a couple more chapters of story unfolding, and I'm also crossing off books from my reading list.

@error might I recommend the Thaddeus Marcell Chronicles by @mott555?

The opposite! It's stopping downloading porn!

@Tsaukpaetra
Yeah I first was going to make a joke about it automatically downloading weird German porn only to realize that if it was doing that it probably was intended

When I'm handwriting I don't make that mistake. I also make less spelling errors. It's when I use a keyboard I'm more retarded than usual.
*Fake edit I actually spotted the then/than this time.

Is the TDWTF unread page loading real slow for anyone else? Navigation within the forum is fine...but getting to the topics page is glacial.

I've seen this in our own code, drop
Sleep()
's everywhere until all race conditions disappear. Is there a name for this antipattern?

sleep

My favorite is when they makes lots of threads, and then put everything in a mutex, declare everything Synchronized, etc.

I wonder if I'm the only one who usually uses Microsoft Message Analyzer for this. I guess I'm just used to using it in environments where it's easier to "sell" "I used a tool from Microsoft" rather than "I used that well-known 'hacker's tool' Wireshark". It also installs less in the way of dependencies (doesn't need Winpcap and the like).

@heterodox said in The Official Status Thread:
"I used that well-known 'hacker's tool' Wireshark"
Corporate antivirus actively deletes "hacker's tools" like nmap and netcat.
(doesn't need Winpcap and the like)
I do see a semi-paranoid concern about installing a packet-capture driver; it could be (ab)used by other malware. (Yes, if you have malware you've already got problems, but it couldn't usually install a driver without privilege escalation.)

Microsoft Message Analyzer
TIL. It ties into application traces and the event log too, that looks very neat for doing things on Windows hosts.

No, I can get into other subsystems just fine, just not the main server...

@Tsaukpaetra This is why you use full-disk encryption.

TIL about

won't give me the to the database, even for Runescape gold.
