MySpace lost 12 years of user content
In the early 2000s, MySpace introduced us all to the world of social networking. Within a few years it became huge platform for music, where bands could share their songs and users could customize their profiles with their favorite tracks. Even as its popularity faded in the shadows of Facebook,...
A site based 100% entirely on user generated content somehow managed to lose 50 million+ pieces of user generated content. During a server migration. How? Did they migrate it by going to \newserver\filez and doing a CUT+paste, but the paste somehow failed and all the source files were gone?
Backups? Backups of backups? Offsite backups?
Was nobody checking the backups?
"Hmm, I just backed up the entire user upload folder, and it's only 500kb now. Wow, that's some good compression."

suggests that the number must be at least around four or five. I'd say five is the absolute minimum, yeah.
One user = one of Myspace's loyal users
Two/three users = some of Myspace's loyal users
Four users = most of Myspace's loyal users
Five users = (all of) Myspace's loyal users.With only four users, it being an even number and all, "some" doesn't work that well for "half".

Fun fact. A "friend" of mine had some (mildly terrible) songs on there, songs he really wanted to remove because "they didn't represent his current image" (the guy takes himself very seriously) but for some reason couldn't. I think it had to do with the fact that he had to accept the new terms to access his files, and/or he couldn't remember his password and he feared something implausible or trivial even if plausible. This is a guy who has a "stash", a couple of dozens CDs really, of pirated content which he wants to throw away but he fears that a neighbor could see him throw the small box, spot a few Verbatim brand CD-Rs in it and call the local tax police to have him sent to jail. (So he gives them away, with more secrecy than a hard drug dealer, so that it's not him who gets caught). This is a guy who asks other people to buy stuff on eBay for him because he doesn't want to risk his financial information online (which is... understandable, yet
considering that he must go through the hassle of asking somebody to do him a favour every time he wants to buy some shit off eBay, but still not batshit insane, until you realise that the guy has no job, no money in the bank, at most one of those pre-paid debit cards which holds never more than the exact amount of money he needs for a precise transaction which means that there is never money there for more than a few hours; that, and the fact that he really wants to leverage the fact that you're OK with "having all your money stolen by Russian hackers"). This is a guy who fears his old "vintage" ('70s/'80s stuff) cameras' "radioactive" lenses (they almost certainly are mildly radioactive, they used certain metals back in the day to increase sharpness, but I suppose I shouldn't tell him about bananas). We used to spend entire evenings taking the piss of him as he is a joke that keeps on giving (it really starts as trying to make him come to his senses, everybody who knows him at first feels a bit of pity for his chronic neurotic narcissism, but he's an arrogant prick who doesn't listen and speaks for hours on end without even listening to what you're saying, so it rapidly morphs into mockery), and going on his Myspace profile to play his songs for banter was a personal favourite, knowing that he would never take the trouble to take them off. But a few months ago, the thing stopped working. The songs wouldn't load. I was mildly annoyed, but I supposed it was some glitch, Myspace after all must be looked after some bored admin who couldn't give two shits about it. Now I discover that the songs have actually been lost, that my "friend" has finally won, and I'm now sad. :(

I was going to suggest you tell him his tin-foil hat is radioactive, too, but it turns out all naturally occurring isotopes of tin are stable. If, however, it's aluminum foil rather than tin, one of the two naturally occurring isotopes is (slightly) radioactive.

This thread reminded me of my very first experience with social media on something called Live Journal, circa 2000. The term "social media" had not been created yet, and its a good thing because Live Journal was more like anti-social media.
I was browsing randomly for a few days and when I came across someone who seemed interesting I would add them as a friend so I could find them again later. I guess people weren't used to that sort of thing because I soon started getting angry messages.
Who are you?
I don't know you. Why did you add me as a friend?
I'm reporting you to management.
Oh well, things worked out for the best. Ever since then I've ignored all that crap and my life has been better for it.

Last time I saw him, he wouldn't touch any phone or computer and was rambling about holograms from the future and evil nanobots that were infecting people and devices.
