Was it in notarized contract?
I recently had a conversation with a family member that went like this:
: "Hey, are you allowed to notarize stuff for family?"
: "Yeah [as long as it's not my spouse], what do you need?"
: "Well, I had to update some of the language in my power of attorney and was wondering if you could swing by and notarize it."
: "Uh, I used to have your power of attorney. Did you change it to Dad or something?"
: "No, just some healthcare stuff."
: "So you're asking me if I can notarize a document that grants me control of your legal and financial matters?"
: "Well, when you put it that way, it sounds like a stupid question."
: "Yes."

Don't worry, this is just the second pass, on the fourth pass It should at least compile again, and then I can start checking th UASSET files!

I think my screen is a bit too dusty, because I read that as "hot manuals" and got an entirely different meaning out of that sentence.

Just realized I forgot some files, booted it up (it's been turned off for at least a month) - 30 minutes later, it's still flashing lights and inaccessible. Being headless makes it a little problematic to see the issue... I may have lost those video files... I'll let it "work" overnight and see.
Nope. It's dead Jim!

@hardwaregeek When WaMu went down the tubes, Chase bought up my old mortgage. Wasn't that big a deal except, oh wait, they stopped paying my insurance premiums from the escrow account and also failed to tell me they'd stopped doing that until I got a nastygram from them saying my home was uninsured and they'd penalize me if I didn't get insurance post-haste.
Of course it was only ever uninsured in the first place because of their own fuckup. But naturally that was my fault. Somehow.
In any case, I don't do business with Chase. Fuck 'em.

It worked to trick the rating system
Yep, because the rating systems in use assumed that risks were not correlated. That's true when the economy is good, but when things take a downturn then the bad loans are more likely to fold together, and that fatally damages the bundle. Which triggers the more complex parts of the bundle relating to insurance against something going wrong, and the whole shitshow of badness snowballs straight into the laps of the banks and insurance companies.

Status: Fell off the patio. Based off what I can see and feel I will get several bruises. I did apparently not break any arms or ribs despite how I fell, with my arm hitting a grill and my back landing on a sharp rock. It did however knock the air out of me, which is something with a surprisingly long recovery time. Also, the onset full pain was delayed, took maybe 5-10 minutes before I felt any stronger feelings of ow. The body is weird like that.
Also, my phone did not get any visible damages (except for maybe a slight scratch on the corner) despite also getting a flying tour.

@atazhaia said in The Official Status Thread:

That's good. Any ligament damage? That can also take a very long time to go right. (Muscular bruising is much easier to recover from.)
-
@dkf Doesn't feel like any ligament damage. I am a bit sore and slight pain on touch, but that's as expected. I still got full mobility in my arm too. I'll see how I feel tomorrow. I had one time when I fell and took severe ligament damage, which is the one time I thought I had broken my arm because of the massive pain that caused. And yeah, I remember it was a long recovery time for that.
-
...
-
@luke-robbins I could not move the arm a millimeter, or touch it, without causing sharp pains. So I could really not tell, although never having broken any bones would make such a feeling unfamiliar to me too, I suppose. Also, they did need to get me an x-ray to make sure, as the doctor couldn't tell for sure either.

Citi is the one I've had bad experience with. I had a very negative experience even before the mortgage problems. Unfortunately, when bank A sells my mortgage to bank B, they don't ask my opinion.

Status: Things are starting to shape up after a challenging past few weeks.
First, there was the ER visit. But I made it out of there the same night, and had a vacation to look forward to.
Then, on the way to the airport to begin said vacation, my car picked up a screw in one of its tires, and when I pulled off the highway to look for a service station to add some air, someone rear-ended me at a red light. So I ended up having to arrange the logistics of getting my car fixed during vacation. While I had a decent time that week, this whole debacle cast a shadow over everything.
The silver lining of this was that I had wanted to get some parts of the car repainted, and having the bumper off would save me good money. I dropped by the body shop when I got back and we worked out the details (which my insurance was okay with, as they had a separate invoice for repairs due to the incident). It would probably take the shop a week or two to get things done, but I had a rental paid for by insurance, so all is good.
Then, I get an email from a rental car manager on the other side of the country complaining about damage to the rental I took for my vacation. As the damage wasn't very clear in the photos he sent and I had no memory of the damage he spoke of, after a couple days of back and forth, I reluctantly sicced my insurance on the issue (even though now I'm quite glad I did). Now, before you guys jump on me about taking photos and walking around before leaving with the vehicle, I used to do that until recently, when an employee told me, "Oh, you don't need to worry about that. We're in the 21st century here and have cameras on entry and exit so it's all documented." Guess not anymore, or only when it's convenient for them. The damage they were complaining about appeared to be some scratches which would probably not even meet my deductible. I'm also going to open a claim with my credit card to get them to cover the deductible and any loss of use charges if they try to pull that. We'll see how it turns out.
Today, I got my car back, nearly three weeks after the original incident. Body shop did a fantastic job and breathed a fair amount of life into a car that's survived seven winters and countless abuses in parking lots. It was now time to drive down to the tire shop I use to find out if that screw (and the source of most of these woes) would be a $15 plug or $250 for a new tire. After waiting a couple hours, the guy hands me the keys and wishes me a nice day (If you buy tires from them, they fix that stuff free of charge. What a nice surprise.).

I can't figure out what I opened the IDE for.
I ended up making a SHA-256 verifier the easy way the hard way - that is, using the Java API from Scala. I had planned to do it the slightly harder way, but turned out this was an area where Scala does not have a native API for
area
and comes crawling back to Java pretending it hadn't said all those things about it.This was, to verify the signature, of the IDE update download...

Guys, no need to argue, there's enough denseness for everyone to go around here!

There are times when I absolutely hate our code. There are bits of it which are just so excessively twisted because they're juggling lots of bits and pieces of asynchronous processing with lots of custom buffer management too. (I can't use someone else's code such as Protocol Buffers for this as I've got to maintain exact binary compatibility at the wire level; the other end is very constrained.) Ugh.
OTOH, a paper we published recently is making a bit of a stir, which is nice. It's a good feeling when one of your students comes complaining at you about the popular press in his home country over-selling a wildly-hyped mis-reading of the paper, and thus he's getting idiocy piped at him by his otherwise non-technical relatives. ;)

Status: Noticing that something somewhere in the stack of Linux Mint, Wine, and Mono was recently seriously optimizated. The only .NET application I use on Linux is KeePass. It used to take ~30 seconds to unlock the password database. Now it's only 1 - 2 seconds, in line with its performance on Windows. Cool.

-
@tsaukpaetra They implemented Spectre/Meltdown attacks to unlock the db, which turned out to be faster than the normal way.
-
@hungrier unfausible
-
@gribnit Pendantry that can't make a deal with the devil?
-
@hungrier No, I mean, I would never suggest that you can't do that. But, it is just going to be slower. Those attacks only get you bits on a probabilistic basis. The locking system may be constrained or otherwise retarded, but having to statistics-attack the problem is another level of slow.
