Next step: pay off mortgage.

Also, I remember when I was so excited that technology had advanced to the point where you didn't have to get big freaking frames that took up more space on your face than the lenses themselves. It saddens my soul to think that those are now "hipster"
My parents always insisted that I could only have the free NHS frames, this definitely helped my school popularity.
Somehow even as you grew the frames were always too big.

I think I'm down to two remaining loans, assuming nothing changes. In the past, whenever a certain President publicly used the words "student debt forgiveness" my loan providers would freak out, split my loans into a million smaller loans, and sell them off to a billion other banks. I managed to re-consolidate most of them last year after it became too difficult to track them all.
-
@mott555 I was not aware things like these could happen. TIL. I assumed loans were only sold to other parties under extreme conditions and not fuckery like this.
-
@stillwater
I mean, I think reasonable expectations that Big Daddy Government was going to come in with a truncheon and mandate that you bend over to receive the truncheon while they determined how many cents each dollar of loan were worth qualifies as "extreme conditions".Also, I've had a mortgage for 6 years, and it's been owned by 4 different banks. Only once was that ownership change the result of my action (refinancing to a lower rate).
-
@mzh Yeah, I ended up realizing that while I was working on it. It turned out great! I'll probably post a screenshot in the space engineers thread.

I was gonna do thin frame but the ladies in my life banded together to talk me out of it.

You do you, I suppose. You can pry my thin frames from my cold, dead hands.

Do glasses designed to help people who stare at computers all day to reduce eye-strain really work? If they do what I am supposed to look for?

AFAIK the colour-tint ones have not been proved to do anything. Anti-reflection coatings have been found to reduce eye-strain though.
I get an AR coating on my glasses and wear them all day even though I don't really need them for computer use. More comfortable for me anyway.

How do I get rid of the DESKTOP NOTIFICATIONS dialog without activating it. There is no X button either and It is being a PITA.
I think the X is somewhat invisible, try hovering where you'd expect an X to be. Alternatively, activate it and dismiss the second dialog that asks about notifications.

If you're breaking the manual, that's a sign you've definitely read it too much...
I do like reading, but usually not manuals, so those tend to break for.... Other reasons...

Having worked for a loan servicer, I can say this is definitely not the case.

My mortgage was sold basically instantly after closing. Just like they said it would be. So yeah.

@mott555 I just did a deploy and nothing broke.
At least nothing I've been able to detect yet.

In the US it's standard practice to sell-off loans. The 2008 real estate thing happened because banks were bundling "good" mortgages (aka ones likely to be paid off) with "bad" mortgages and selling them as one big batch as a way of tricking the rating system. It worked to trick the rating system but a lot of banks and traders ended up with loan packages that were a whole lot worse than they'd expected and the whole thing came crashing down.

The optometrist who tried to convince me to buy a pair was so insistent that I'm sure they're complete bullshit.
... not very scientific there's my opinion.
-
@stillwater
Having an appropriate prescription helps reduce eye strain a lot. The yellow tinted blue light filtering lenses don’t seem to help me with eye strain appreciably (beyond actually having the proper correction), but they do help with contrast in my case.
-
My vision is 20/20 so never needed prescription glasses. I've tried using the bluelight filter thingy that comes with windows, I've tried wearing glasses(not color tinted) that were supposed to help but did not. I assumed I must be wearing the wrong ones. If that is not the case then I guess I gotta figure out a way to stare at computer screens for lesser periods of time which is not easy for obvious reasons. Guess I'm fucked then. Only other alternative would be working wearing sunglasses which would be TRWTF.
-
@stillwater
My optometrist suggests following a 20/20/20 rule.Every 20 minutes
Take a break for 20 seconds
And focus on something 20 feet awayI kind of suck at remembering this, until my right eye is so bloodshot that it’s physically paining me.
-
@stillwater The optometrist who recommended them to be said they were a pair of glasses that changed the focal length so your "eye-focusing-muscles" got a work-out while using a computer and weren't just slack the whole time, which over years would cause them to weaken. AFAIK the glasses he were pitching weren't just a color filter but actually had some kind of focal correction to them.
But I didn't buy them.

What's interesting about this chart is that the Microsoft version STARTED as a toy gun, turned into a real gun, then turned back into a toy gun.
-
@blakeyrat
I think it’s even weirder that they went to an entirely new toy gun.
-
@izzion Thought these were all changed to walkie-talkies.

I assumed loans were only sold to other parties under extreme conditions
When my ex-wife and I purchased or refinanced our house, one of the pieces of information we were given was the percentage of loans the lender typically sold. I don't remember all of them, but one time we refinanced, it was with a lender who sold 100% of their loans (because they gave us the best terms), which sold it to a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad bank (THNGVB Bank) that I would never, ever willingly consider doing business with. A few years later, we refinanced through our own bank (which a lot of people think is terrible, but I've never had a bad experience with them, except maybe this...). They didn't generally sell many of their loans, but they did sell ours, to the lender who sold 100% of their loans, who turned around and sold it to the very same THNGVB Bank, which, when I lost my job at the beginning of the recession in 2008, wouldn't even talk about any kind of payment reduction until we were already delinquent, then insisted we didn't qualify for any of the homeowner assistance programs, and eventually started foreclosure, as it turned out, just before I got a job and could have resumed making payments. In short, yes, selling loans is common, and a bit of a touchy subject with me.

@tsaukpaetra Be happy in the knowledge that you're changing it to the less-right variant - all the best naming conventions smash acronym casing.

Well, I'm the DB guy, and since the (inherited) table uses the not-quite-right version, I'm making it consistent with the DB.
It's easier to rename shit in the code than it is in the database (not going to explain why, y'all foreheads might explode).

status I think I migrated off my HomeServer in the knick of time... Just realized I forgot some files, booted it up (it's been turned off for at least a month) - 30 minutes later, it's still flashing lights and inaccessible. Being headless makes it a little problematic to see the issue... I may have lost those video files... I'll let it "work" overnight and see.

Are you storing variables in strings? Is your code 100% reflection-based?
