Meanwhile, back in April:

@masonwheeler I will keep that in mind. Need to find a job at one of the poles.
Well, I could use someone to clean my house...

To clarify (at least how it was reported on the local radio this morning) it was a half-eaten sausage roll.
To the point where I thought "would there be all this fuss if it was a full one?"
Followed by "FFS, get a life you lot," after they got some radom twat on wittering on about "right to not be offended" as if it was a thing. Who then somehow () managed to drag Charlie Hebdo into the conversation/interview.
I gave up listening to him at that point.
Wait...you can listen to live broadcast of Twitter? This sounds like Twitter.

"What happened might be considered one of the most stereotypical Canadian political squabbles of all time: a party uses a hockey fight to attack their opponent and ends up apologizing for it."
Detroit stands back and says: "Hold my beer, let me show you how we do it on our side of the lake."

Hook her up to Twitter. Please.

@pjh They make the air slightly warmer but they make your body a lot colder. That's probably what they meant.

@laoc Isn't the fan death thing normally about sleeping in a room with a running fan, and no windows open?
-
@magus Yes. And it's even bigger nonsense that way.
-
@bulb Let there be no mistake: I fully agree.

Good on him!

Thomas Merton died when a fan fell in his bathtub, but that's probably not what they meant.

Selena, Rebecca Schaeffer and John Lennon all died because of fans.

At times? I found most of them highly formulaic myself. Database-driven topic smashers likely using some form of natural language processing. I didn't perceive any real intelligence at all....

I didn't mean that kind of scripted -- I meant they sounded word-for-word scripted.

Two road gritters have been named Gritsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Anti-Slip Machiney and David Plowie in a council-run online poll that saw a flurry of witty suggestions.

@pjh I'm pleasantly surprised that they didn't go with Plowie McPlowface.

@hungrier They did state that suggestions had to be original. That particular meme has now been succesfully tried a few times so it's no longer original.
Meanwhile I'm surprised at the variety they already had:
The council currently has five named gritter vehicles: Brad Grit, Gritney Spears, The Subzero Hero, Mr Plow and Usain Salt.

@polygeekery It's not unwarranted though:
Peanuts are actually a legume - in the same family as peas and lentils - and has different properties to tree nuts, like cashews. This means that someone can be okay to eat peanuts but suffer if they come into contact with other tree nuts.
I know a guy who is sensitive to tree nuts, so the difference between a plain peanut or e.g. a walnut is a big deal in a not-dying-by-anaphylactic-shock kind of way.

We call them gritters, not ploughs (possibly because we don't often get deep enough snow, in most of the UK, that the function of clearing it is more important than spreading grit.) I'm pretty sure Gritty McGritface came up last year, though I can't remember if it was actually used or not.

Indeed. My wife can eat peanuts just fine but tree nuts means a trip to the hospital.

That really depends on where you are. Sheffield may well have enough high settlements in the district boundaries to justify ploughs; the high Pennines (along with some of the more elevated parts of Scotland) definitely have a different winter climate to most of the rest of the country.

They're ballsy - stealing AT&T's deathstar and just changing the color...

@boomzilla Some varieties of hibiscus do have leaves that look somewhat similar to pot. I'm going to take a wild guess and say that the plant might've been Hibiscus sabdariffa, aka Roselle or Flor de Jamaica...

In Portuguese we use the word "folha" for both leaves and paper sheets.

Similarly, in Spanish, the word "hoja" means "leaf" and "page." And "blade," for that matter.
-
@dkf They are ploughs, AFAIK, certainly where I grew up they had ploughs on the front. But we always called them gritters. I was just speculating about a possible reason for the difference in naming convention. Or maybe it's just one more term that differs from one side of the Atlantic to another for no particular reason.
