I finally got a Popeye's that I don't have to drive halfway across town to get to. I decided on one of my rare visits there in the past that their chicken is way too damn salty for my taste, but unlike Church's, they have cajun rice as one of their sides.

I searched for Peter Peter, hoping that was a hint, but all I found was this

@jaloopa I believe the reference is to the nursery rhyme "Peter, Peter pumpkin eater, Had a wife but couldn't keep her; He put her in a pumpkin shell. And there he kept her very well."

“Peter Peter Pumpkin Eater”
Never heard of it
-
Research:
It is generally believed that Peter’s beloved wife was a hooker. Since he could not keep his spouse from having sexual affairs with numerous men, he decided to kill her and hide her body in an absurdly large pumpkin.

@polygeekery can anyone explain why people put periods at the start of tweets?

NFC. I usually see it in relation to Twitter handles. If I had to hazard a guess I would assume it is some sort of escape character so that you can mention someone without pinging them? Or maybe just fat fingers?

Because if you started with
@jack
, only jack and people who follow both of you would see the conversation. It's meant to be a pseudo one-on-one. People use .@jack so they can pretend they're directing the tweet at someone but really it's an "open letter" and they want attention from everyone.

I mean, other than the obvious thing it could be a code for. I'm not saying that it is. I don't know. I just think there's an obvious thing that a "period" might represent...

¿The tweet's secretly in Spanish?

·No, that would be more like this.

Yes.
Oh you're asking for an explanation?
Because if you start a Tweet with a @username, it'll by default only be visible in your feed or theirs or to people who follow both of you. If you start it with any other character, it'll by default be visible to everybody. So if you use a period (or some other non-@ character) at the beginning of your tweet, it goes to everybody.
Note these rules don't apply if you retweet a tweet starting with a username, and also nowadays Twitter will randomly retweet things you hit the "like" button on without telling you.

Well, not when it pertains to you. You are when it pertains to other people.

Well, at least it's consistently inconsistent.

A lot of "features" of Twitter were dictated by the community.
For example, starting a tweet with @username used to push the tweet to everybody, but you "just understood" it was meant to that one specific person. They changed the functionality of Twitter to match the "understanding" of Twitter users. (And a lot of people were pissed when it changed, natch.)
Similarly, Hashtags didn't become actual search links until years after the community had mutually-agreed that they served as tags to categorize tweets. (Nobody complained about that one, AFAIK.)
Now Twitter has no idea what Twitter users want, and are broadcasting NFL games or so shit.
