I hope no one believes people will put VR helmets on just to chat with their friends. It's like they want the Metaverse, but with our current stupid buzzwords instead of early 90s ones.

Status: So, we had a bit of stormy weather today which, as it is wont to cause, in Hamburg means toppling trees all over the place, including the power lines and tracks of our trains.
I had just sat down in one of those trains and was wondering why the electronic sign was stating "Departure: 0 minutes" for 5 minutes now while the electronic sign of the other train in the same direction was saying the same thing.
Then I heard the faint noise of a loudspeaker announcing something. Too bad I wasn't able to hear it due to it being on the other side of the tracks, behind my train, on the other end of the station. It also was only a single loudspeaker. The ones directly above, to the left and right of me obviously had been hit by a tree as well.
While I was still trying to figure out whether we were actually moving anytime soon, I saw three(3) train conductors at the start of my train, standing there and having a wank or something.
Why do I say that? Because when I asked them it turned out that they had known for 15 minutes at that point that the tracks were out for the count for at least three hours. Not that any of them could be bothered to tell the hundreds of people on the platform anything about that, no. Assholes.
Then I returned home and found out that my landlord (is this the right word for a company?) obviously decided to switch the cable company. How did I discover this?
Easy: By finding a letter from the current cable company telling me that my internet-over-cable contract will be cancelled at the end of the year. Not a letter from my landlord, mind. Will probably switch to VDSL as the new provider doesn't have that hot of an offering. For instance, I was also looking to switch my current mobile provider (which is O2) because they pulled some crap stunts, the service has gone downhill and reception is really spotty. But while the new provider does have a bundle deal it would entail staying in the O2 mobile net.

No. Originally the avatars kinda were, but it was decided that looked stupid when all the input you (usually) had was head position and orientation, and hand position and orientation. Trying to reasonably extract phantom body part positions gets increasingly more inaccurate the farther away you go from the point of input.
So, currently avatars are basically Rayman-like (with no feet).
You can see it here:

I found two teams of high level players fighting in the wilderness. Some had died and dropped their inventories, so I discreetly grabbed everything I could and walked away. They didn't seem to mind.

Status: Scratching noggin.
I have an MVC Api controller action defined like this:
[HttpGet] [Route("ListFiles")] public IHttpActionResult ListFiles(int id = 0, string Name = "", string pattern = null, FileTypeEnum? fileType = FileTypeEnum.Invalid, bool ignoreUploader = false, int PlayerID = -1)
Literally everything is optional.
But, when making the request without
fileType=
:{ "Message": "The request is invalid.", "MessageDetail": "The parameters dictionary contains an invalid entry for parameter 'fileType' for method 'System.Web.Http.IHttpActionResult ListFiles(Int32, System.String, System.String, System.Nullable`1[Application1.Controllers.APIControllers.FileTypeEnum], Boolean, Int32)' in 'Application1.Controllers.APIControllers.CloudStorageController'. The dictionary contains a value of type 'System.Int32', but the parameter requires a value of type 'System.Nullable`1[Application1.Controllers.APIControllers.FileTypeEnum]'." }
It apparently uses an
Int32
if the parameter isn't specified at all, but if I put it in with no value, all is well.WTF is the point of an optional parameter if it doesn't work if you leave it out?!?!

Status: GF bought an Arduino and started playing with it yesterday evening. We ended the evening measuring each other heartbeat with the provided captor and looking at the graph on the screen, while playing various music tracks.
(Trying to see if our gut feeling that our heartbeat not only changes with the music -- this is well documented -- but even perfectly synchronizes with it, is true. No definitive conclusion yet...)
Is this what a romantic evening between geeks looks like?

Which Linux is also doing atm. So, for some reason, both Windows and Linux has the same issue of showing the network as disconnected despite bing connected. Slight difference, though, as Windows shows a big red X while Linux is stuck on the retrieving IP icon.

Another status: An email just went out that the building management team is apparently going to be testing the fire alarm system. No indication as to what time they'll be doing so. I sit right next to one of the wall sirens for it. Also, I work in a call center. That will be great to hear on call recordings...

I used to work in a small office with two full fire alarm sirens in it (and no, building services never figured out whether they could disconnect one). I hated the testing that was done on a weekly schedule for obscure reasons, but at least it was easy to avoid by scheduling a meeting in another office block for then instead…

Where I used to work, unless it was specifically an evacuation drill, it was done outside normal business hours and usually without actually activating the sirens/horns/loud thingies.

Status: A while back I received a new debit card for one of the businesses. They only put my name on it, and not the business name so I asked them to replace it, which they did. I activated the old card and used it for a while and received my new card a couple of weeks later, that I just called in to activate.
It was already activated. The CVV code and everything are exactly the same. They mailed me a card that was already activated...that does not seem like a safe idea to me...

@tsaukpaetra They probably assumed you wouldn't bother to activate the wrong card (because why would you?), and thus there was nothing wrong with sending out a corrected card with the same numbers on it.

Perhaps you need to move the window 3px to the right?
Though that is quite odd. Does the screenshot do it if you overlay it exactly where the issue occurred?

It's ClearType, you've gotta align the subpixels.

It's ClearType, you've gotta align the subpixels.
A subpixel is a type of elementary particle and a fundamental constituent of matter. Subpixels combine to form composite particles called pixels, the most stable of which are white and black, the components of computer screens.[1] Due to a phenomenon known as color confinement, subpixels are never directly observed or found in isolation; they can be found only within pixels.[2][3] For this reason, much of what is known about subpixels has been drawn from observations of the pixels themselves.
Subpixels have various intrinsic properties, including electric charge, mass, color charge, and Subpixels Quarks are the only elementary particles in the Standard Model of particle physics to experience all four fundamental interactions, also known as fundamental forces (electromagnetism, gravitation, strong interaction, and weak interaction), as well as the only known particles whose electric charges are not integer multiples of the elementary charge.
There are three types of subpixels known as flavors: red, green, and blue.[4] Red and green subpixels have the lowest masses of all subpixels. The heavier subpixels rapidly change into red and green quarks through a process of particle decay: the transformation from a higher mass state to a lower mass state. Because of this, up and down subpixels are generally stable and the most common in the universe, whereas blue subpixels can only be produced in high energy collisions (such as those involving cosmic rays and in particle accelerators). For every subpixel flavor there is a corresponding type of antiparticle, known as an antisubpixel, that differs from the quark only in that some of its properties have equal magnitude but opposite sign.
The subpixel model was independently proposed by physicists Murray Gell-Mann and George Zweig in 1964.[5] Subpixels were introduced as parts of an ordering scheme for pixels, and there was little evidence for their physical existence until deep inelastic scattering experiments at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center in 1968.[6][7] Accelerator experiments have provided evidence for all three flavors. The blue quark was the last to be discovered at Fermilab in 1995.[5]

Status: Because database IDs are hard-coded into the game (based on what the dev database autogenerated them to be), and because we want to "sync" certain items from the dev database to prod (there is no test), I am now going to drop the Identity from the primary key, and write up a trigger to handle inserts (because the database schema must match when using Entity Framework or it yells at you).
Joys.

@tsaukpaetra If you're using a modern version of SQL server (or any competitive product) fuck your trigger use a sequence and set the default value to the function that gets the next sequence value.
Keep all your hardcoded IDs under, say, 10k and start the sequence at 10001.
