@raceprouk It'll be reviewed by his peers. It's just that his peers don't include
many scientists…No, I don't. There are some really weird people out there who nevertheless manage to do some science. They're the ones who really shouldn't be trusted on anything outside their exact subject area. (For example, you probably don't want to listen too much to atomic physicists on the subject of brain biology.)
It's even more narrow than that - I've seen an astrophysicist proclaim very dubious stuff about frozen water (which is the area of solid state physics).
-
@rhywden heck, it worries me when a collision theory specialist (what I got my degree in) starts declaiming on density functional theory (a relatively close field). Most science these days is super siloed and specialized.
As they say, a BS degree means you know a little about a lot, an MS that you know more about less and less, and a PhD means you know everything about nothing. Sad, but pretty true.

United Airlines wouldn't let this shit happen. They would drag the turtles from the runway and go about their business.

@boomzilla Man, what is up with nudity posts today? Is the NSFW topic leaking?
-
@tsaukpaetra Um, based on the mugshot there, pretty sure that came from the NSFL topic.
-
@boomzilla said in In other news today...:
NSFL topic.
The one by @cregox ?
I haven't seen it there.

-
@polygeekery They'd at most have called attention to something he did. Since calling attention to things he does is apparently their hobby.

I have pretty much the same interpretation.

That's a terrible headline. It implies the police admitted to being immature jerks, when in fact, two other people were jerks to the guy and the police were reporting what this guy told them.

That's hilarious. It appears that you can fold it up and hang it anywhere you like, and it's considered "returned" and ready for the next person to come along and rent it? ...except that they apparently neglected to consider that a significant number of people would hang it up inside their house, where nobody else would be able to rent it.
I was going to say that they could just do like Redbox and continue charging rental fees (up to the cost of replacement), but if the umbrellas are technically already considered to be returned at that point, then their whole system of rental/return is broken and needs an overhaul... they need some way to ensure that it's not considered "returned" until it's left on public property where someone else can rent it.
edit: that makes me wonder, wouldn't folding it up while it's wet result in it getting all nasty? Do they have some way of drying it while it's folded up, or must you keep it rented until it's dry (but then, if it's still raining, why would the next person care if the outside is still wet)?

I can learn a fictional language from a show about dragons, but if I want to learn Tagalog, a real language that people speak in the world, I'm out of luck.

While we're talking about duolingo: it says I'm 20% fluent in Spanish. I don't feel fluent at all and can't understand more than a word here and there. On the bright side, I can now say "I want a beer", so I have that going for me, which is nice.

We have a (Flemish) song for that ...

Uh it's actually more of a joke ... the TV presenter accepted a challenge to make a popular Schlager-kind of song and perform it at a Dutch Schlager show.

You'd be understood with that in Britain but if you really want to convey the depth of feeling in British, you need an index finger as well.

During World War 2 we had a shortage of copper wiring, as such it was cheaper to have the house on one giant circuit and put a fuse in each plug
Oh, so that's why we have that then! TIL :D
-
@raceprouk during and after as I heard it, since a lot of houses had to be built immediately after the war.
-
@raceprouk See, it's not related to security after all
