@Jaloopa They never only harm yourself unless you live in a social vacuum. I have literally never seen it not at some point harming your surroundings in some way, be it the rich or the poor side of the family, be it alcohol, smoking, weed, precription drug addiciton or heroin, be it friends, even the loners.

I have no qualms about killing him off. The way it was handled was, however, utter shit.

Well, it's so bad a movie you should never watch it, anyway.

@antiquarian Never did I state that I think we should do that because I think it is morally wrong, those two just happen to coincide and both be properly unpopular oppinions. We should do it because it would help humanity as a whole without any grave downsides beside "muh culture" and boring people not being """""fun""""" at parties anymore.

Did you know Al Capone was an alcohol dealer?
-
@Quwertzuiopp Then you should have done a better job of wording your post. Not that doing it because "you know what's best" for everyone is such a big improvement.

@Karla Tell me about them. You know, any that do not actually stem from being an unstable country in the first place. And I said nothing about actually implementing it, which would be batshit insane without decades of preperation and a lot of community work and the little not so little need to have a stable legal system and police force.
But if your argument really involves "we shouldn't try because criminals will abuse this to make money", then, shock, awe, how does this NOT apply to any other criminal activity undermining society that makes money. If all you have got to say is "people are going to be angry they can't teach their children how cool systematic drug abuse is anymore" then don't bother.
And hey, this is the unpopular oppinion thread and not the "asshole oppinions we circlejerk each other for"-thread

And on the topic of drugs, I think this fad of legalizing Marijuana is a terrible mistake. I think it is morally wrong to take any kind of drugs of any kind and that includes any and all kind of alcohol and nicotine. If anything, we shouldn't talk about legalizing new stuff, we should be talking about forbidding all drugs that are still legal, including alcohol. Prohibition was a great idea, but the criminalization of drug use is a bad one. We should enforce total prohibition on all drugs but coffein (since it has no serious side effects, no malicious effect and a "caffein addiction" is literally easier to beat than uncrontrollably chewing you nails)
Imma stop you right there. First, it's spelled "caffeine". Second, it's actually more addictive than weed; third, caffeine causes physical dependence and the withdrawal includes some very unpleasant symptoms (unlike weed), and fourth and finally, you're a fucking hypocrite. Hope this helps.

Insomnia is a thing. Costs and benefits of weed versus sleeping pills could probably be debated.
-
@asdf taking something medicinally to treat insomnia != addiction.
I could probably claim to know a few people who claim they're unable to wake up without caffeine, but that isn't why it's an addiction, either.

I like php just fine. There are a lot of awful paradigms and garbage that one can do in PHP, but that doesn't mean one must do them. So it is not necessary that PHP code be shitty. A shitty PHP dev will make a mess of code out of any other language too.

You're assuming the insomnia, which is magically cured by pot, was not a consequence of decades of excessive weed consumption, but pre-existing. I'm still not convinced excessive consumption is as harmless as people say. But whatever, let's not argue about that when we agree on everything else.
-
@Quwertzuiopp said in The official unpopular opinions thread:
But if your argument really involves "we shouldn't try because criminals will abuse this to make money"
The argument is "Don't make something illegal when everybody wants to do it anyway because then you've made everybody cooperate with the criminals instead of working against them". There's many other reasons not to do it, but that's one of the big ones.

Considering dividends are insignificant for most stock, they are like a pyramid scheme. There is no benefit owning it except for the others having the illusion it's valuable.

This might be an unpopular opinion: Jar Jar Abrams is a shitty director and Force Awakens is one of the worst sequels ever produced. All of the world's rules get abandoned, the story is mediocre and actors are especially awful.
I'm a firm believer in that there are six Star Wars movies.
Which six, you ask? Machete Order* and Rogue One.
*A couple years ago, some friends and I did a Machete Order marathon, in three installments (4-5 then 2-3 then 6). 2 and 3 become a lot stronger when you watch them back to back, as opposed to three years apart.

It wasn't their decision to kill off Solo, it was Ford's.
Fallon asked Ford: "So you're there, on the film set. You put Solo's clothes on once again. What did you feel? What did you do?". Ford replied: "I got paid".

Sufficiently excessive consumption of anything is harmful, even fatal.

Machete Order
Putting the prequels in the middle in general (which a commenter has pointed out is called Ernst Rister order) allows the series to end on the sensible ending point (the destruction of the Empire) while still beginning with Luke's journey. The prequel backstory comes at the perfect time, because The Empire Strikes Back ends on a huge cliffhanger. Han is in carbonite, Vader is Luke's father, and the Empire has hit the rebellion hard. Delaying the resolution of this cliffhanger makes it all the more satisfying when Return of the Jedi is watched.
Reminds me of the April Fools joke South Park did with one of their early cliffhanger episodes:
Since the last South Park, you've waited four long weeks to find out who the father of Eric Cartman is. Now, finally, the shocking truth about Cartman's lineage... will not be seen tonight, so that we can bring you the following special presentation.
