RE: VAC detected a virus on my PC that neither my AV nor Windows Defender detected
VAC might be better than Avast at anti-malware, but it is, in its current state, literally the worst CS:GO anti-cheat software, with some free, widely used, open source cheats avoiding detection for almost two years at a time. Everything about VAC and Valves incredibly abysmal management of the counter strike franchise is a god damn meme because otherwise the community could not cope with the sheer sadness of it all. The people on the CS:GO subreddit always claim they are the unwanted stepchild of Gaben, while DOTA2 is the favorite and only loved son.
For instance, there is no beta testing in CS:GO. None. All changes immediately go to "production", meaning the official matchmaking servers. As soon as a feature is finished coding it gets put into the next patch which then get rolled out to all players, and when something is buggy they just hotfix it. Between the developer finishing the code and the entire playerbase "testing" it wether they want to or not, no actual player or tester seems to touch the patch at all. Valve treats it like some major technology breakthrough that they now have a "beta branch" which does not mean anything like what the name implies, but is pretty much just a way for turnament organisers to actually install an older patch so they don't have to play on sometimes broken live versions.
Also, there is no community manager. There is noone responsible at Valve for communication with the community. They prefer to "communicate" through the patchnotes of patches that can be month appart at times. They allways blame it on the structure of Valve where everyone gets to choose what to work on, and apparently everyone wants to work on DOTA2 and nobody in particular feels the need to do community management in CS:GO and hiring someone for that goes against company policy.
The community allways ironically treates it like some coming of a prophet when a CS:GO dev even does so much as leave a single god damn comment, because it practically never happens and never gives anything but vague hints of "there is a least 1 person currently working on CS:GO" and zero usefull info.
I absolutely buy that VAC complained about a manipulated DLL, that is, as far as I know, one of the few things VAC gets right (after two years of several cheats simply injecting themselves into DLLs to become undetectable because VAC originally did not check them at all).
I am uncertain though wether the virus truly is the thing that cause the VAC errors, as VAC is very wacky and often simply does not work on someones computer for no apparent reason at all, even after a full clean reinstall of the entire system, just to suddenly work again.
It has actually happened that pro players were kicked live on stage during Valve organised matches, but not for actually detecting cheats but for "VAC connectivity errors". Which is allways a massive annoyance because then the admins have to restore the entire game server to its previous state per hand because getting kicked is counted as suicide and suiciding gives the enemy team money, and if it happens at end of round time, the kicked player will not get any of the win or loss money, both of which massively screw over the game economy of the match, which is a massively important game mechanic that the majority of strategies revolve around; there simply is no built in way of saving the current state and reverting and replaying it in the player economy, meaning the admins have to manually spawn lost weapons and manually add and substract money from the players.

RE: Scandals in Communist Frenchystan
I feel so sorry for France. I had hoped both Germany and France could get their shit together in both their soon-ish elections as they are the center around which the EU gravitates and as it seems at the moment the EU will never do anything usefull unless both Germany and France have shit straight at the same time and want to do something together.
At least some good news from Germany: The moderate socialists (SPD) got their shit together and actually nominated someone who seems like a good person and is seen as trustworthy, Martin Schulz. Everyone thought the party leadership would just try to push their leader Sigmar Gabriel even though he is not very popular and seen as part of the party establishment that pushed the party to the right and made it basically the same party as the conservatives, who pushed to the left. But in a move that was actually unexpected to me he stepped down and left it to someone who actually has a chance to improve their results.
There are also the greens, who are in the peculiar position of having an increasing number of social-conservative who are also environmentalists in their party, so they too are dragged to the middle like seemingly everyone else, while also being more left than the socialists because those moved to the right.
Then there is the "Die Linke" (literally "the left") which seems to be the only serious left-leftwing party left and might just be able to get huge results were it not for the fact that a lot of people still distrust them because one of the consitutent parties that merged to found this one was the remnant of THE ONE party from the communist german one party state (though to be honest that remnant and what remains of it today were mostly the moderates and reformers and everyone that had a serious hand in the oppresion machine has zero chance of actually getting any positions throught this party and has left for actual (irrelavant) communist parties by now)
Even though there is a socialist majority in the parlament right now, they don't want to join in a coalition because all sides accuse each other of being either too left or not left enaugh, though the main problem is that the moderates' leadership is at the right most edge of the left side. I honestly to this day don't understand why they didn't just fucking make something of their majority and rather went "lol, better become junior party underneath the conservatives and lose even more seats next election lul" and it might just go the exact same way this time.
The conservatives (CDU/CSU) have a lot of problems right now. Their credo used to be "no constitutional party right to the right of us", meaning they wanted to capture everything on the right end that is not actually racist etc (so basically they are dirty liberals/comunists from a republican perspective). Then they moved to the left because germany has a pretty left majority, that worked everytime we stole the election from the socialists! Ups this time the new wave of right wing populism is stealing a few of our percentages, better start making hardline rightwing statements to try and steal the back! What, what do you mean that way we only legitimize them? But I am insulting our leader for being incompetent and a commie, why are they not voting for her anymore!???? You know what? Initiate emergency protocol start as much beef between the two sister parties as you can, insulting each other will make us seem more competent and votable!!! So yeah, that is Merkels party(s) for you (Yes, they are two seperate parties, joined in some kind of everlasting coalition and only one faction in parliament)
The liberals (FDP) used to exist but they did not make the 5% bar (got like 3%). Basically the most reagonomic repulicans you can imagine, except they like LGBT and don't like guns. They were perceived as #hailcorporate sellouts and that did not bode well after the financial crisis. Doubt they will come back.
Which leads us to the big problem, the new populist right wingers (AFD). They occupy basically the most right wing position the conservatives had, except you then move them to the right two notches and they are a-okay with all the nazis comming to them as long as they wear suits and don't say anything racist enaugh to be criminally chargable loud enaugh for anybody else to hear. So basically nazis, but they deny it. I highly doubt they will ever amount to anything because not even conservative hardliners want to have anything to do with them, but it remains to be seen wether their entry into parliament will shift the majority enaugh that there will have to be another big coaliton between the two middle most parties
Edit: How did I forget to mention that there is a palace revolution basically every six month and the current Führertess is basically using some kind of insulting right wing newspeak that would put a shizophrenic tumblerella to shame.Good new though is that while the Constitution Court decided to not ban the actual Nazi-no-we-arent-we-just-really-love-white-people party (NPD), they did decide that the party is unconstitutional. How that works, you ask? Well, they found them guilty on all charges but they interpret the constitution so that you can only ban a party if it is relevant enaugh to change anything, because they don't want to set precedent for banning parties, but *wink wink*unconstitutional parties are not protected by the constitution *wink wink*in regards to taking some of the freedoms a party is granted away *wink wink*, like getting public funding like all recognized parties do*wink wink*. So if the lawmakers take the hint and the NPD decides to protest on grounds of the constitutional protection of parties, it will be the shortest supreme court decision in history, making the NPD basically bancrupt effective immediately. Nobody sane should be sad about them though, the world doesn't need a party with slogans like "white shouldn't only be the color of our national teams tricots"/"It is called "National Team" for a reason" etc.
So basically +/-0 on the shit together scale for germany I guess? The left got it's shit together and the right lost it?

RE: Side projects Ben Lubar should do now that Alien Swarm: Reactive Drop is being released
Aww, and I thought this topic really was about inventing side projects for you.
I would like to recommend that you make your own reverse polish concatenative programming language with the entire syntax being in Dorf speak so that the language ends up looking like dorfs learned how to write spell rolls. That should be a !!FUN!! sideproject

RE: Free Delphi 10.1 Starter
It's even more ridiculus considering you can probably just switch to Lazarus and get an open source delphi for free. The only thing that would stop you from just opening your project in Lazarus and continuing work like nothing has changed could be that you need some sort of comercial tooling or library that does not work with Lazarus and freepascal. Usually you can just slap on the delphimode compiler switch on top of every file and you're good to go.
I was actually pleasently surprised how everything about Lazarus "justworks" after I was recently remebered how everything about C++ just wants to make me cry before I have even written a single line of code and encountered a language wtf. I just tried out Lazarus for the first time in two years or so out of couriosity and nostalgia and I could get a basic SDL2 pong running and building in under two hours.
It makes me sad to think of what could have become of Delphi/Pascal if they hadn't crashed and burned that thing by management wtf-ery.
@masonwheeler said in Free Delphi 10.1 Starter:
Nick recently quit his current job to return as Delphi product manager.
The entire Delphi community (what's left of it at this point) is basically in mode at the moment.I did not know that. Now I am in mode as well, though this move is years late I feel.

RE: 📧 The Official Spam Emails Thread™
@Jaloopa I have no clue why, but apparently a lot of North American systems don't understand international conventions. When I was in canada, neither 0049 nor +49 worked as country code for Germany, only just 49 worked. Except it kind of actually did work because it would actually ring through even though you got one of those "invalid connection" sound messages, so if the other side picks up you suddenly had TWO voices speaking to you. It was pretty infuriating to hear the person you want to speak to while a female robot voice yells at you for dialling an invalid number. And even though the connection was obviously, noticebly, established, the other side couldn't hear me. When I tried the same from an american phone, it just didn't work at all, though I am not sure if that is more or less.

RE: Shit Crusader Kings say
I fucking love this game. Just played a round with a friend yesterday evening. Gavelkind succesion is the bane of our existance. You build this massive, enormous Kingdom/Empire and in the end it all falls appart because upon your death all your titles are evenly split between all your valid heirs of same rank (in most cases all your legitimate sons produced inside a marriage, or in absence of sons, your daughers if you don't have pure agnatic succession) and everything crashed down burning because power is now split up so much noone can mount an effective defense against outside invaders/ unruly vassals.
The genious part of the game is that from iceland to bangladesh, every ruler, from emperor to little baron, and all their courtiers and families, are each independant NPC's with their own traits and interests that they pursue, creating this illusion of a giant, living and evolving world.
I spent the better part of my evening yesterday with unsuccessful fratricide as neither of my brothers were able to kill me, nor could I kill them, just for my high intrigue daughter to murder all of them, seduce her last remaining cousin, and then murder me. Wasn't even mad because it effectively reunited the realm.
Meanwhile my friend was busy defending against the Mongol hordes burning Europe from the East, while his character had the "Lunatic" trait and would do random bullshit. He too had too many sons and not enaugh royal authority to change the inheritance laws, so when he got the chance to throw the retarded son into a vulcano to appease the old gods from his imagination, he grabed it happily. Let's just say only one son was still alive by the time the father threw himself off the highest tower laughingly.
That son was a slavic pagan, just like his father and all his realm, but as believers of an unorganized religion you have multiple ways to convert to an organized one, of free or unfree will (You can also reform the religion and let some priests write a holy book if you are insanely powerfull, but what ever). He converted to persian Zoroastrianism for the sole reason that that religion allows brother-sister marriage and incest, because back when his son was still an NPC and had his own free will, he banged his genius, beautifull little sister and produced a son so perfect he just HAD to find a way to legitimize him (the son was dilligent, kind, just, brave, patient, genius, attractive; the beauty of the game is that you can see the stats and traits of every character and all their social connections, which is why a lot of people also roleplay their characters and later write AARs about their game)
Fun times indeed. This game is a masterpiece if you know how to get your fun out of it.
Edit: This is my favorite Crusader Kings post ever, abusing bugs and game mechanics to genocide all humans and replace them with sentient horses

RE: TempleOS and HolyC (Again. I think there's already a thread. Oh well.)
@asdf No, the guy literally has schizophrenia but refuses to belive that and instead claims its god giving him visions, but at least some time back he admitted he just swallows some of the pills from the doctors so they and his parents shut up about it. There is an indepth interview with him somewhere where he describes his descent into madness and how god gave him visions and saved him. Ever since he thinks that gods speaks to us through paterns in random noise, which started with him opening the bible at random pages and allways having the right answer to his problems, but he got more sophisticated and developed a program that turns grade A random white noise from some university server into random words through which he belives god communicates with him. He has allways had good and bad times, but he has allways been ranting about "niggers" and the CIA and stuff like that, so I wouldn't put it beyond him to forget to take some meds or simply advancing far enaugh into mental illness to need a stronger dosis and making that page himself.

RE: Time Warner Cable has some really l33t people working there
My ISP is phenomenal in every way and I have a 400
kM connection (plus 120kM upload should I ever need that, not that I would ever know what to use it for) for the price I would have gotten 16k for at my old home. They only operate in this city, but in this city they are unbeatable. I went to one of their physical stores around the corner, signed the contract, got handed a modem, walked home 10 minutes, plugged it in and immediately had internet. Most other providers can take more than two weeks to set up internet for you. Also, they don't throttle you and don't subtly throttle netflix or twitch or youtube, like some others do (or at least used to). When I had a problem with twitch being slow and some others random site not loading at all, I went to the store again, and was assured a technician would call me "soon". He called me 30 minutes later and sorted out some kind of routing error with the node I was connected to. This is just absolutely uncomparable to the horredous service other ISPs give you here.
BUT, I have to use one of their routers because are mainly a cable tv company and everyone, even those that don't get internet over their tv cable, are routed through this atypical infrastructure of theirs and for that you need a very specific setup. They just give you a router with all of this complicated mess preprogrammed, but you have to use that one. It's not a bad or cheap one. BUT, while they are not on the stock settings of that router in terms of passwords (which would be username:admin, password:(serial number of router)), the admin account is username:"" password:"admin"
The first thing I did when I got it was try out all the usual suspects when it comes to default admin accounts. None of them worked, but I accidentially did not enter a username and admin as password and it worked. I didn't even know an empty username was possible. It isn't even space, it's just nothing at all. Of course I immediately changed that, but I am still wondering how many people have the default still in their routers.

RE: Bad games you like
Man I absolutely loved Europa Universalis 3 even though it is nigh unplayable without all addons (and I mean ALL of them, if you don't have everything up to "Divine Wind" good fucking luck) and even then, the only way to convert it from ok to great is playing with total overhaul mods. The Clausewitz engine is moddable in all the right ways and if you don't take one of the super bloated mods like MEIOU and stick to the likes of Death and Taxes, it becomes a legendary game.
It occupied so much of my and my step brother's time. If I hadn't gotten this game outside of steam, it would be my most played game in the statistics. We once did some calculations, and it turns out we must have played ~1500 hours in MP each, plus any single player experience. And that's because this game is brutally difficult and unforgiving.
When EU4 came out, a lot of people hated it because muh cartoon graphics (which is a completely insane complaint btw, not only does it look better than ever - unlike in EU3 I was never tempted to install a graphics or UI mod - it doesn't fucking look like a cartoon. That honor goes to HOI4) and because the system of having a extremely limited amount of magistrates and diplomats that can do shit was replaced by a point system that measures the ability of your ruler to manage administrative, military, and diplomatic parts of the government and have those points accumulate. This was, despite being a way better, way more interactive, less cumbersome, more moddable method of achieving the same thing as in EU3, of course decryed as the impending doom of all that is good and right in the world. They decryed it as the three Führermanas and said that now you are some kind of wizzard commanding the use of paper, sword and bird mana.
Years later EU4 is still the best strategy game that ever was and will be for the forseeable future, but it's steam score has dipped massively because of entitled shitheads meming the score down to oblivion. You see, EU4 works on the model of optional DLCs. They are usually about 10 - 15 € and are the expansions that keep the game alive. They are allways accompanied by a patch with a boatload of free stuff and mechanics for all of those that don't buy it, but the core of the expension is the dlc. That dlc then funds the next half year of development, that allways includes another big patch with free extra stuff that roughly equals a small dlc, free for everybody. Rinse and repeat. If you don't like an expansion, don't get it. If you play multiplayer, the hosts dlc's are allways active, regardless of the other people in the lobby. If they don't have one or even any of the dlc, it doesn't matter: This session will activate them for them. If you save during multiplayer, they will even stay active in the save game. You can even rehost that savegame and thus spread the dlc so to speak.
For a long time this worked well because the dlc's are basically what used to be entire expansions. It keeps the game fresh and in development, for years. Someone who would get the base game and all the dlc as they are released would have payed about 200 € by now, but considering that all those that do have playtime in the 100s of hours and often support an entire host of friends that play MP with them and only have the base game, that's completely fine. My friends and I usually measure the worth of a game in hours/€ and EU4 still comes out on top as the best game even ahead of Skyrim. The problem just is that it's hard to get the full game outside of steam sales now. But it doesn't really matter, every DLC means two free content and mechanics patches for the basegame, the basegame is still perfectly playable and fun, contrary to what some people claim. What they are thinking of is "I can't game the technology system as a native american or SEA country without Common Sense DLC" and stuff like that.
But now, in the last few weeks, the score has dropped massively, with people claiming that it is because of the dlc policy, which is btw still the best possible approach for a non-esport title IMO, but in reality it's because they are entitled fucking shits from developing countries. You see, ever since the base game came out, Paradox hasn't adjusted their prices anywhere, at all. But with rampant inflastion in places like Russia, and cumultative inflation in places like Brazil, people from those countries could get the game for bastically jack shit. So Paradox adjusted the prices so that the game costs the same basically everywhere now. If they had done so over the years, noone would even have noticed. But this singular up in price, somehow, triggered them hardcore. I just can't understand why to be honest. It's not even like it costs massively much compared the the local spending levels, the game still costs about 8 snickers in all of those countries.
But that's russian and brazillian "fans" for you. They are by no means the only ones, but the magnitude in which those people started to troll down the steam score and hate on the game on reddit is unreal. From my compounded experience from e-sport games and this, it is really hard not to develop a prejudice towards them. I mean, some pro Counter Strike players won't attend events in Brazil and don't want any events to be held there because they get massive amounts of death threats from brazilians and those that do go get threatened in the streets despite having some bodyguards.

RE: Building a new gaming pc
@Dreikin Sooo... good news is it's booting? Is the keyboard thingy because you actually didn't connect a keyboard? Otherwise let me tell you that for whatever reasons most BIOS and Windows in Recovery mode often don't play ball with USB Keyboards connected to a USB3 port if they are not USB3. I thought my Mobo was broken for a solid day until I figured that one out when I tried to recover my PC a few years ago.
Now you just need to put the Voltage up to the max. save Vcore (1.35V I think), see wether it boots at 3.8, 3.9, 4.0 and 4.1 GHz respectively (a chip that goes to 4.2Ghz with a save Vcore that won't grill your chip is exceedingly rare), and play with the RAM timings, voltage, clockspeed and mutipliers (that chart I posted had some settings for your exact setup that worked). And then you're all set.
I don't remember wether you used an M.2 harddrive only, but be warned that you will need to manually package any Linux live system with fitting NVMe drivers or you won't be able to mount and partition. Also took me longer to figure out than I care to admit. Windows 10 comes prepackaged with those, but Windows 7 does not, so if you are going for win7 google for one of the guides that tells you how to load the driver during the install process.

@TimeBandit Well, they don't want you to know or you will start using it for just that

RE: Windows Update WTFs
@sh_code No, I mean literally stuck while opening and closing, jittering back and forth. It literally just works, and as I said it is required by law for either it or keeping the floor button pressed to work as a shortcut anyways, for emergency personn
alel. -
RE: Windows Update WTFs
@sh_code Actually, the elevator in my appartment comlex has this button and it actually works! You can make the door go openclosopencloseopencloseopenclose if you press the two buttons in the right rythm. Or you can fuck over other people that want to get on by keeping it pressed, then the doors won't open untill you reach your destination. But that functionallity is actually in every elevator in some way, often by keeping the target number pressed, so police can get up quickly in case of emergency.

RE: Building a new gaming pc
@Dreikin I hope that really was the problem, pinning down these hardware issues is a nightmare. If you have further problems with the ram, the people from the thread I posted can probably help you. The Asus CH6H really is the best AM4 motherboard out there right now, so a ton of people have it and a ton of people that are probably more helpful than me frequent that thread.
-
RE: Building a new gaming pc
@Dreikin Uhhhh, maybe the CPU is not sticking properly on the motherboard? A bent pin maybe? Otherwise, I have no clue as for how to proceed further without testing the same CPU with a differen motherboard. This looks suspiciously like "satans part" or something straight up broken.
-
RE: Building a new gaming pc
@Dreikin Actually, according to this sheet from this thread, there are multiple people running your exact RAM configuration on your exact motherboard, soooooo....
maybe look into that?
edit: maybe it really is something different? Did you ever actually get into BIOS? Maybe you could use old cheapo RAM to get into BIOS, hack in those supposedly working setting from that sheet, power off, put your ripjaws in, and boot again? Or maybe something is damaged from transport and is broken because of invisible microfissures? Or maybe you are one of the unlucky bastards that gets the occasional "satans part" as we call it here?
-
RE: Building a new gaming pc
@Dreikin I have no idea why one would want to do that tbh. 3200 is only really amazing for "gaming" workloads and I have no clue what game would require more than 16GB of Ram. They say there will be a new amd firmware that solves these problems "soon(tm)". If you have some needs that need this kind of ram, get it at a lower speed. 3200 is only point of diminishing returns, not the must have point. If you really have some workload that needs in excess of 16GB of ram, you are going to have to do some research because I have no clue. Are there even 16GB single rank DIMMs? I don't think you can even fit that much single rank ram on a normal motherboard.
AFAIK, if you really care about having a lot of RAM then according to the motherboard manufactuerers and the overclocking scene pretty much all RAM 2666 and below should work. Emphasis on SHOULD. But then again, you shouldn't trust me on that because I havent researched any of that.
