THE BAD IDEAS THREAD

@RaceProUK Ah. Not nice.
-
@RaceProUK Wasn't that proven to be false?
Aside from potential SSD murder, and a poorly secured website, their DRM is cracked so quickly they might as well not bother.

Judging by some of the angry emails leaked, there appears to be some truth to it:
sendmail 2014-11-19 22:04:14 array ( 'name' => 'Broken SSD', 'email' => '<snipped>', 'phone' => '5555555555', 'message' => 'I have a broken SSD and from what my disk manager shows, the games that use Denuvo protection are the reason why. I have several hundred hours logged in Lords of The Fallen ( PC ), I tend to walk away from my computer during games to tend to things in real life. However it\'s shocking to see that your software destroyed my Solid State Drive, block by block. Are you going to reimburse me? Are you going to fix your broken or make it so it doesn\'t hit the hard drive so hard if you have a low amount of RAM / Use a pagefile at all ( like most computers that use Windows?).', 'captcha' => 'HE29a2', )

The problem with DRM is that, to people who enjoy reverse-engineering stuff, it's the perfect game.
Think about it. it's like a puzzle that has been carefully arranged by expert coders, with layers and layers of encryption and anti-tampering mechanisms to test your skills. At the end, a free game and +10,000 "hacker-points". The more effort they put in those things, the more fun they must be to solve.
-
@anonymous234 It's also an arms race between the makers of DRM and the hackers who want to break it. Thing is, innocent consumers are getting caught in the crossfire.

I still think Gabe Newell's method is the best. Don't make it harder to steal the game. Make it easier to buy it legitimately.
Just like how you don't need to be faster than a lion to escape it. You just need to be faster than your friend.
And that's how Gabe Newell got eaten by a lion.

If we're talking 'ease of purchase', GOG and Humble Bundle are technically easier, given they both favour DRM-free sales more than Steam does.

Steam doesn't require DRM, but they do provide it for people who want it. You basically upload your EXE to a website and it gives you back a DRM'd version.
-
@ben_lubar Some would argue that the Steam service itself is DRM, in that it often has to be running to play the games installed through it.

If only because there's an inbuilt dependency on
steam_api.dll
.

.steam_api.dll
andsteamclient.dll
are depended on by my game's dedicated server, but it works without the Steam client installed.

Well presumably he'll be hanging from a parachute which should help with that (I think).

Interesting that profile views seems to be inversely proportional to number of posts, at least for this small sample.

The more you post, the more people know you, the less they have to check your profile to figure out who you are...

Last night's bad idea coming out of my sleepy brain:
Boop boop
That was my phone complaining about low battery.
Should I get up and put it to charge or should I wait for the morning?
It depends on what time it is. I need to know what time it is.
But I don't have a clock on my nightstand. I use the phone to check the time.
And I don't want to turn on the phone's screen or that'll just make it discharge faster.
I know! I have a small torch at arm's length. I just need to shine the torch on the phone's screen, no need to turn its screen's backlight on.
TDEMSYR. Go back to sleep.

Bad Idea: trying to use voice recognition to search Google Maps when driving with a passenger.

Are the posts themselves deleted, or just the topics?
I seem to remember that they can be (have to be) deleted individually...
