Discourse knows exactly what you have read and even how long it was visible on your screen...
So Jeff did read my swear filled rant at him, because it was on his screen?

In nearly four years of using Discourse, I have categeorically never pressed the like button on a post I have not read.
Really? Maybe I can interest you in a certain userscript...

That's reasonable, the universe probably blows if you were born on february 30

@fbmac calendarnormative shitlord! If I identify as having a February 30th birthday I have every right to celebrate it then

Which sets strange limits on things you can do. Especially weird on a bug-tracker. "I can only accept 50 new bug/feature requests per day".
Which is why /t/1000 was a thing, and the increase we made on likes happened, when we were using it.

Jeff's argument is basically "I have never eaten food at a restaurant without ordering it first, and therefore eating food is a valid substitute for ordering food."

As a Discoanalogy, it's a restaurant that can barely open a tin of corn, but read in a book that pleasure from food and sex are related, so they hired hookers. Except they just hired one fifty year old quadriplegic midget with syphilis and open sores (get it?). Look at all the features this restaurant has!

Oh come on, you're leaving out about half the features.
The wait staff will happily inform you of... inadequate "performance" by handing out toast with messages on it
They will also feed you food, any way you like, as long as it's one of the two predefined meal options and you don't do anything to change it.
If you don't like this, they react by instantly charging your credit card and throwing you out the front door. Unfortunately for them, they forgot about the hole in the wall that allows you to walk right back in, despite it being covered by a huge pile of trash labeled "Javascript".

@izzion post 1.0 software regularly breaking plugins? They really need an actual API
-
@Jaloopa
Jeff the Magnificent does not do anything so uncouth as to break plugins. The plugin author merely fails to code for the Next Ten Years.

Or at least a way for plugins to identify which version they work with.

@boomzilla they do. If the forum whitescreens, the plugin doesn't work. Simples

Oh, goodie, that won't fuck people up royally.
Hmm, I need a private area in my forum so the support group can discuss their gay ass cancer without getting stoned to death by the local religious group. Like, literally stoned to death.
I have a plug-in that can make areas private. Here you go.
Sweet.UPGRADE! SILENTLY DISABLE ALL PLUGINS WITH NO FALLBACK!

I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt and give them credit for trying. Well, it's possible, anyway. The problem is that they're not competent enough to succeed at it.

So, we're piloting Discourse, and we've really noticed it's awful to try to create new topics from mobile
: Why create new topics? Just reply to one existing mega post, our forum is well tuned for a large omnitopic. And besides, our staff can help you split posts out into new topics when they diverge from the One Approved Topic, and move those split topics into the DiscoDumpster.

@Zecc no, I think they mean "we really do not optimise", a subtle but highly important distinction.

@Zecc no, I think they mean "we really do not optimise", a subtle but highly important distinction.
Given that they set up a CDN to deliver letters, I'm sure that's not the meaning they intend to convey.
-
@boomzilla no, that's exactly it: they really do not optimise their platform, as in zero effort, as opposed to not really doing it but vaguely trying occasionally.
Building a CDN because you have literally no better ideas for optimisation is not merely failing to do it well, it's failing to do it at all.
-
@Arantor
-- in the v0.1 days --
: Hm, I think we might be doing a little bit of premature optimization here, we should probably focus on getting a MVP done first, and then come back and see what needs cleaned up
: Excellent idea! Official company policy is to never optimize, so that we are sure we don't prematurely optimize!

@izzion said in How can this be so wrong??? (AKA the Discopocalypse thread):

To be fair, Discourse has never been close to a most valuable player.
Or, arguably, a minimum viable product
-
@Jaloopa Or a multi-purpose vehi- oh, wait, that's MPV
