How many times could you eat the same meal?
-
It seems some people can eat the same meal over and over without ever getting tired of it. Other people need a significant amount of variety.
This is in reference to a more "staple" meal. Not a fancy "rare treat" meal you'd eat every day if you could afford it.
Assume the following conditions:
- The meal is nutritionally balanced enough that you wouldn't die of scurvy or backed-up-pooper (or at least it's supplemented with, like, a salad)
- It is affordable, you aren't breaking any budgets by having this over and over (in fact the more affordable the better)
- It does not have an unreasonable preparation cost-- it's something you can make in bulk and eat over a week and/or can make several frozen portions and/or can easily prepare from scratch in, like, 15 minutes
- edit: It can be a "base" meal like pizza or tacos, where the variety is the toppings, as long as it meets the above criteria
- edit: Other criteria, yes, it should be a meal you enjoy eating. You aren't choking back baked cow livers with cilantro.
IE: Could you make a giant casserole, eat it every dinner for weeks on end, and not get sick of it?
-
@Lorne-Kates
Is this the exact same meal? or can we cheat and say something like Pizza?
-
Well damn, I suppose Ramen is right out then, I could eat it for days as the lunch staple so long as dinner had a little variety.
Yum!
-
I like variety, but I could eat the same meal for a few weeks straight if I had to, as long as it fit those criteria and was also something I liked to eat.
-
I was on a cruise for a week once and they had free pizza slices you could take. I usually only eat one meal a day so I had pizza as my meal at dinner for a week straight. Also I think I only swapped between pepperoni and cheese, so there wasn't a whole lot of variety.

Three days seems to be my limit. On day four, I'm sick of it but I'll eat it anyway. On day five, I can't eat it.
-
Yes.
Before I was married, I ate the same thing for lunch pretty much every day at work. Bologna on whole wheat, tomato, mayo, mustard, and usually some pickled jalapenos or something on there for spicy also (edit: and carrot sticks, usually). Dinners generally consisted of made-from-scratch hash browns and eggs, cheap packaged ramen (usually with some extra spices and something or other mixed in, like eggs), or canned chili beans mixed with tomatoes, rice, potato, and extra spices.

Yup, my father typically only eats dinner. Frickin insane if you ask me...
-
@Tsaukpaetra How much would you have to eat....
-
I could eat the same thing over and over again, but I eat in less than a minute and don't pay much attention to my food...unless it's a good meal of course.
-
@xaade said in How many times could you eat the same meal?:
@Tsaukpaetra How much would you have to eat....
He eats just as much during dinner as the rest of us plebes (that is to say, no more than you'd expect for a typical meal), and still manages to gain weight.
-

You and me both. Although it's probably screwed my metabolism up something fierce having done it for so long...
-
If salad counts, then literally any food preparable in Dwarf Fortress would be allowed.
I'll have some minced flour and minced sugar and finely minced flower and minced strawberries today.
-
@e4tmyl33t when I started working I bought lunch every day and ate the same amount for dinner so I put on some weight. Now I just bring a yogurt for lunch, it is light enough to keep me going until dinner without making me feel gross. Pretty sure my metabolism is super screwed up also.

Something like this.
I've given up on cooking large amounts of food as to last for a week (or whatever), each time I've tried to do so, I ended up with a significant part of it being thrown away (or it walking off by itself). Cooking single meals can be surprisingly difficult, though, since it's hard to buy some stuff in small enough quantities.
-
@Lorne-Kates said in How many times could you eat the same meal?:

No. I get very tired of similar dishes over and over. I can eat pizza maybe twice in a week, or like, chicken dishes three or four times if they're different ones, but then I get tired of it.
-
@Lorne-Kates My weekday lunches tend to be the same. A Caesar salad and fried chicken thighs.
Breakfast, too: Chop up 3 or 4 slices of super cheap bacon ($3/lb) and an egg or two, plus some shredded cheese sprinkled on top.
Extremely affordable. Obviously this is cooked every day and entirely eaten.
-
@Lorne-Kates If the assumptions are met, I would have no problem with eating nearly the same every day (or every 2nd day, then it would be great). But hard to find something that eaten so often would be healthy.
In practice I have a set of 5-10 meals I know I like and rotate between them.
-

Yeah, my problem is similar. Dinner around 5-6 PM is the only usual meal I have, however I tend to graze on smaller stuff like a bag of chips or something during the workday (partly because it's an extra stimulus to keep my brain from going into blah-im-bored-land and partly just so I can have that little bit of extra energy should I need it). Unfortunately sometimes that grazing ends up going a bit more than expected (i.e. bringing in a standard size bag of chips because it's cheaper than getting the smaller vending machine ones and realizing at the end of my 8 hour shift that I've demolished the whole thing because I wasn't paying attention)
-
I think it'd grow old very fast for me. There have been times out of laziness or whatever I'd just make something huge and eat leftovers for several days, but I don't think I'd be able to get much farther doing that without feeling like I need something else. Obviously, depending on the food, I'd tolerate it more with my favorites versus something I'm just meh about.
I'm still better than my wife, though. She barely enjoys any leftovers at all. She tends to complain more about wanting to switch things up from our rotation, and sometimes we're on a 30-day rotation.
I will say, though, that when it comes to breakfast, I'm probably the most boring and unadventurous. I could have eggs, bacon, and french toast every morning for the rest of my life and I think I'd be fine with that. With the cholesterol such a diet would bring, it'd probably be a rather short life anyways.
-
@e4tmyl33t I used to do the exact same thing, except with goldfish(the crackers). I would open a bag and mindlessly eat the whole bag while doing something else like reading.
-

I don't see the problem... Those are single serving bags. (The ones in the Costco box, right?)
-
When I was single I used to get a month's worth of meat in one as a variety box from my local butcher. They always had one or two joints of meat which I'd cook on a Sunday and then finish in sandwiches over the next week. I think I'd get bored eventually but I could handle 2-3 weeks of the same dinner without minding too much.
-
I can easily eat the same meal for a week or so. My family cannot/will not though. During the winter, it is no big deal for me to make a 7 quart Crock-Pot of chili and then eat that until it is done. A bowl of chili and a peanut butter sandwich will keep me pretty happy for lunch and dinner. I can do the same with a big pot of pasta and homemade sauce.
My wife and oldest basically will not eat leftovers though. The wife might take some for lunch the next day, but then she is over it.

I normally ate the 6.6 oz bags which have 6 servings in them I think.
Goldfish are weird, they come in individual snack bags, 6.6oz bags, boxes, groups of snack bags and cartons. At least those are the only sizes I've seen.

Back in high school I had a friend who would smoke copious amounts of marijuana and then eat Nutty Bars. One night, when in a mischievous mood, I stole his cache of Nutty Bars and he hilariously lost his shit about it. There was a long, hilarious, weed-fueled rant about how it was all a conspiracy, references to the Illuminati and the Bilderbergs, whitey was trying to keep him down, etc.
I cannot walk through a gas station snack department without remembering that night.

I think I've had slight variations on a single lunch over a hundred times in the past year.
Marbled Rye, Roast Turkey, Splnach or Romaine, Tomato, Cucumber, Bell Pepper and Red Onion if available, Caesar dressing. Cold with raw carrots.
If marbled rye isn't available, substitute panini bread or replace the deli meat with grilled chicken and put it in a wrap.
-
@ben_lubar Why is "finely minced flour" a thing?
-
I would say I could eat lasagne (my version of it) for quite a while without getting bored. It's not super healthy, though. Or a simple pasta with pesto.
Currently, I'm giving Joylent/Soylent a go so I haven't been eating real food for a while.

TIL of yet another new conspiracy theory.
-
I could probably eat various style of poutine for a week before getting bored.
-
@Lorne-Kates goes meal prepping?
I was thinking of trying something like that, because the only decent restaurant near my workplace makes delicious food but they're usually packed (it's a tiny bistro), plus the portions are gigantic sometimes, and I hate getting food delivered there because I always end up playing goddamn Marco Polo with the delivery person. (Why do half of them insist on going to the back of the building when the main entrance is clearly visible from the street?! Fuck!)
I think I could do something like this for a week or two at a time: http://newleafwellness.biz/2013/06/18/freezer-to-microwave-breakfast-burritos/
I'm pretty sure I could eat tortellini, ravioli or some other kind of pasta with filling all day every day if I'm allowed to switch up the filling (and maybe sauce). And pizza, of course... but I think the motivation to do this kind of thing is often to have homemade healthy meals with controlled nutrition in order to lose weight better, so pasta and pizza probably isn't the way to go.
And of course various sandwiches or subs, that's a classic. Lettuce, tomato and some kind of meat, all day everyday.

No, I drink enough coffee to keep my body healthy

At Uni, I often had One Square Meal for lunch. If those were available here, I probably still would.
-
Yeah, with a little bit of ingenuity I am sure that I could live off the same meal (with minor flare changes) for weeks. When I make BBQ pulled pork, I make enough for 7-10 days. Usually freeze half and eat the rest, so that is usually 4-5 days of the same meal for lunch and dinner.
In college, I had pizza just about everyday (Sundays were football days, and those required football food) for several months.

Wakeup: Coffe
Breakfast: Fresh OJ, 2 rounds marmite on heavily buttered lightly toasted white. Note: don't drink the Oj straight after the coffee.
Lunch: Tuna mayonnaise on brown, with tea.
Dinner: Ham, egg, chips and peas and an ice cold continental beer.
Supper: Cookies and ice cold milk.Every day for the rest of my life, no worries!

I have the same breakfast of cereal day in, day out, special circumstances excluded of course.
Other meals, I wouldn't fare so well.
-
I often have similar breakfasts, but since I switched my normal breakfast to bagels/English muffins and whatever cheese is in stock and sounds good where I shop, it varies a bit; even in the 'cereal every day' phase, I'd change up the kind frequently.
