Disabling the “sleep when lid closed” in Windows is however not a satisfactory solution, as then it wont automatically do that when “undocked” either. Or turn off the built-in monitor with lid closed. So, yeah, Windows is as per usual doing it all ways of dumb.
Well, here I am arguing with you again, but what the fuck are you on about? There is a seperate setting for when on battery or external power, and every laptop I've seen in at least the last 20 years turns off the screen when closed.
Windows even flips the icons on the desktop around to the way they were last time it was plugged into the monitors with the lid closed (well, except when it loses its shit and rearranges by name, but it can do that even without rearranging the screens. Like when your desktop is on the server and the network connection drops momentarily.)

@boomzilla RealVNC?
If you had Windows and a Microsoft account, you could just use Quick Assist, which is just part of Win10.

B&H has plenty, what are you trying to do? I have this one: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1576157-REG/olympus_v207132bu000_om_d_e_m10_mark_iv.html
Can't be used as a webcam, but takes pictures and is small and light.

lockers. Or self-service delivery lockers.
There are, but they exist in the range that for average Merkin is further than a fridge (t.i., too far to go on foot), but not far enough to unpark ol' 5.8L V8 F-150, therefore they might as well not existNope, the nearest Amazon locker is an 8 hour walk or ¾-hour drive. I work at a small business so just get my Amazon deliveries there.

@blakeyrat The "extra shit" is just the TeslaUnread plugin, which is developed by the same developer as Nova itself. Install it, then you can configure which apps can display notifications by running the TeslaUnread app.

@error said in The curious case of the time-travelling SQLite CLI:
Wouldn't it be better to fix the permissions issue, either by editing ACLs or using a different location?
It depends. If he's only using the shell for dev/debugging purposes and the db is normally only accessed by a service, then elevation is preferred, as it will keep the db safe from accidental or casual tampering. He could just add himself to the ACL manually for that, or use an elevated prompt. If it's to be accessed by multiple users, then the installer should probably set the ACL.

I find it annoying that the peripheral manufacturers didn't unify on Bluetooth, instead continuing to come out with their own dongles.
The advantage of those dongles is that they show up as a keyboard and mouse and therefore always work, even before the OS is loaded.
Logitech, on some of the higher-end stuff, has started supporting both BT and Unifying.

RE: Aquiring an automobile
@TimeBandit Depends on how cheap you have to go. Looks like according to carfax, a 2008 Impreza is on the order of 10k or less, at least here in the US. They start new just under 19k, just under 26k for the highest-end 4-door (non-WRX)

Subarus are a bit big and expensive.
According to teh googles, a 2010 Impreza sedan is a whole inch longer than a 2010 Corolla. 2.5 cm longer is too big? Maybe it's different over there, but the differnce in price here for 10-year-old base Impreza vs Corolla isn't that much.

@GuyWhoKilledBear Calibre on the pc, sync via Calibre companion on Android devices, read with Moon+, which syncs position through gdrive. Manual sync (as in search for the top line on the screen) to go to/from nook, but your ereader as an android device might be able to install Moon+.
There's also a content server which you could also expose to the Internet if you really want to.
This all depends on them being drm-free.

RE: WTF is happening with Windows 10? And nothing else
@pie_flavor I think I must be on Earth-73 too, because I don't have these problems with Windows either. The worst I had was my profile getting fucked, but that was back in 1703 I think. Also, Edge fucks itself over occasionally, requiring reinstall, which affects some store apps that apparently use the html control (Netflix and Hulu). Maybe I'm on Earth-72?
ETA: two different computers. The profile fuckups were my laptop, the Edge fuckups were my desktop, which is an upgrade from Win7.

"Van Rijn" is actually the last name of famous Dutch painter Rembrandt.
So at least one of his parents was a huge art nerd, or maybe an SF nerd: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicholas_van_Rijn

RE: WTF Bites
@Tsaukpaetra Eh fuck Apple, the only mac on the network belongs to one of the other sw devs and he's been working from home since April so coming in via VPN, and phones shouldn't be on the internal network. I really don't want to fuck with renaming the domain AGAIN (it was set up by a friend of the boss originally with an .inc top level domain we didn't own, before .inc was even a possibility) and I've got a few people moved on to it already. The Big Move has been pushed off because of no-time-to-switch-shit-over-this-has-to-be-done-next-week for more than 5 years now.
Wikipedia says 8.8.8.8 is a global anycast, so I will probably set Panama to use that Real Soon Now™ since I've already put in a CNAME for the Subversion server, which will be moving as soon as I get the last two users off that old DC and shut down that VM.

There isn't an .exe.config file installed for the service (Yes, that was a real example). I guess, if there isn't, it just sees it's a 4.0 and runs. Until, as you said, it tries to do something that didn't exist.

RE: Blakeyrat complains about Android, because it's shit
@hungrier Of course, on Samsung/TouchWiz, which I am assured is complete shit by the "pure Android" zealots, I get this:
Spinners for the time (or just touch the blue number to get a keypad), circles around selected days with selected days shown also at upper left, and a date picker in upper right to change to a one-off alarm on a particular date. -
RE: Common phone number. Somehow.
The Skepticality podcast (back when, you know, they actually did any) used to play messages from there voicemail number of people trying to buy saddles. Apparently, the number was close to one for a saddlery, and people would just ignore the message about the podcast and try to order stuff for their horses.

RE: Stackoverflow has the password to my mail-account
@fbmac, @Jaloopa You put it on your phone, too. Then you can look it up and type it in. This assumes there's a local copy of the db on your phone, which KeePass will do, at least on android.
I use Keepass2android offline, which doesn't use any cloud. I sync all copies with a thumb drive. The phone I sync by copying off to a computer, opening with desktop KeePass and syncing, then copying back.

Bullshit. Amazon Prime can deliver a 30GB game on a Blu-Ray faster than you can dowload it on sub-Mb DSL, like my co-worker’s shitty, oversubsribed Verizhit DSL.

RE: The minor rants thread.
@Tsaukpaetra Er? It's a program running on your computer, NSSM runs any not-a-service program as a service. It's not a library. The program might still not work if it can't find a desktop, but it might be worth a try.

Why can't I scroll any more?
It doesn't matter what topic or whether l'm on my phnone or pc. Maybe it's chrome? In any event, I try to scroll down from say post 286. It immediately jumps to 296. Try to scroll back, and it starts loading the intervening posts. Then it jumps either to 286 or back down to 296.

@Arantor We must be on different versions of Earth. This is another one I've never seen and I've updated two personal laptops and at least 3 work devices using the store with no problem.
Unless it's only non-oem installs? The personl ones were an ASUS and a Dell laptop, and the work ones were all Dell devices as well.

RE: Pressure to upgrade to Windows 10 ratchets up. AGAIN.
@blakeyrat
Because they commit to some number of years of support after the last service pack. Releasing another service pack extends the support.Of course they could just release another one and say "nah, we're not extending support," but they'd catch shit for that too.

-
RE: WTF is happening with Windows 10? And nothing else
@Tsaukpaetra Well, if you're genuinely interested, keep reading, otherwise skip.
I'm not sure it really counts as a mount point, because that would require root access. It's using something called Storage Access Framework, and any software needs to be written to use it if it wants to access anything mounted by the Paragon software. FX file explorer is. Whatever part of the android os that shits all over usb drives isn't. Additionally, it has to allow adding locations. As I understand it, SAF is what allows the Samsung file browser to access my Samsung files, Google Drive, and Onedrive. Since there is no button to add an arbitrary location, it can't use the Paragon-mounted drives. FX does have such a button, so can.

It's the only one I know of right now, but I haven't heard anything about Sony planning on changing the lack of cross-platform play. Sony has done nothing to make me think they can be trusted to not fuck you over.
