@topspin Well, even Trent Reznor (the guy in the video who also wrote the song) said the Cash cover was better.

RE: WTF is happening with Windows 12? And nothing else
@Arantor We must be on different versions of Earth. This is another one I've never seen and I've updated two personal laptops and at least 3 work devices using the store with no problem.
Unless it's only non-oem installs? The personl ones were an ASUS and a Dell laptop, and the work ones were all Dell devices as well.

Disabling the “sleep when lid closed” in Windows is however not a satisfactory solution, as then it wont automatically do that when “undocked” either. Or turn off the built-in monitor with lid closed. So, yeah, Windows is as per usual doing it all ways of dumb.
Well, here I am arguing with you again, but what the fuck are you on about? There is a seperate setting for when on battery or external power, and every laptop I've seen in at least the last 20 years turns off the screen when closed.
Windows even flips the icons on the desktop around to the way they were last time it was plugged into the monitors with the lid closed (well, except when it loses its shit and rearranges by name, but it can do that even without rearranging the screens. Like when your desktop is on the server and the network connection drops momentarily.)

RE: WTF is happening with Windows 11? And nothing else
@Arantor But it doesn't fuck up the association. I tried two different Win11 PCs that never had any other 3D software installed. Creating an empty .stl file and attempting to open it pops up the app selection dialog. Suggested apps are 3D Viewer, Paint 3D, and Print 3D.

RE: WTF is happening with Windows 11? And nothing else
@hungrier You installed some shit software that fucked up the association and it's somehow Microsoft's fault?

But yeah, the bottom line is that icons move randomly around and it's easier to stop trying to worry about them and just hunt the one you want whenever you need it.

@Tsaukpaetra If it's not a brand-new drive, the "empty space" may actually contain sensitive data as well.
If it's a brand-new computer and you haven't used it yet and don't care about plausible deniability, feel free to encrypt data only. Future data will be written encypted and deleted data will remain encrypted.

RE: In other news today...
@DogsB So the same thing I've been doing with my Samsung device for six years already? I suppose Apple will "invent" it in 2025 now.
Yes, the original version "required" the DeX dock, but it was swiftly followed by third-party devices that supported DeX mode just as well. Now of course you just need a usb-hdmi adapter or wireless display for the phones, and the higher-end tablets don't even require an external display.

@Arantor No, it means they only sprayed "traditional" pesticides all over it. At least for left-pondian "organic."

I still have the last CD & DVD set in a pair of binders in my desk at work.

RE: The Cooking Thread
@Polygeekery I do something similar with taco meat. Two regular or one family size shells-and-cheese, add a pound of ground beef prepared by the directions on the packet of taco seasoning; use less water than the directions.
This was invented from leftovers once when I was broke.

RE: I hate printers, with a passion
@Arantor Except then the EU will mandate a filesystem driver ballot and require them to bundle the GPL driver and Paragon's driver and let the user choose which one they want to use.

RE: WTF Bites
@Bulb They saved a buck or two using cheap WiFi chips that can't simultaneously run client and AP mode.
Or that's just Tizen for you.
Both equally likely.

Parboil a little longer. The Brussels sprouts getting tender is still the gating issue in deciding when the meal is adequately cooked. I'm not quite sure where parboiling (to facilitate a later cooking step) crosses into plain boiling ((almost?) fully cooking), but I can push it a bit longer.
3-5 minutes in the microwave is good too.

B&H has plenty, what are you trying to do? I have this one: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1576157-REG/olympus_v207132bu000_om_d_e_m10_mark_iv.html
Can't be used as a webcam, but takes pictures and is small and light.

RE: Help Bites
@Benjamin-Hall "Other devices" have what for the DNS server? On my home network, the router handles dhcp and dns, so sends its own ip for the DNS in the DHCP offer. This means my PC is sergyar and my printer is ml2851 and can be found by these names by anything else, because they are told the DNS is the router.

@acrow I saw a youtube video about this. It was an Owens-Corning plant and they spun it into housing insulation.

@Tsaukpaetra At least it doesn't silently truncate it and then use the full entry when you try to log in.

RE: Help Bites
@izzion I got nothing. I do a lot of this stuff and I can't see any problems, though I use conn.CreateCommand() instead of the SqlCommand constructor. Is there anything useful in the exception?

RE: The Absolute State of eBooks?
@GuyWhoKilledBear Calibre on the pc, sync via Calibre companion on Android devices, read with Moon+, which syncs position through gdrive. Manual sync (as in search for the top line on the screen) to go to/from nook, but your ereader as an android device might be able to install Moon+.
There's also a content server which you could also expose to the Internet if you really want to.
This all depends on them being drm-free.

@HardwareGeek Runebox: Big eared ginger kitten? Consuming (Using) it adds the pet to your accout permanently. If you already have it on your account, or just don't want it, you can sell it or give it away. All runeboxes are like this.

RE: WTF is happening with Windows 10? And nothing else
@Tsaukpaetra You need faststream to do high-quality audio and a microphone, otherwise yes, you end up with headset quality. Almost nothing supports faststream, though. Avantree has a few items that work well.

@Zenith If I needed a new one, I'd get a Framework, even without a touch screen (though that is a selling point for some people.) But I don't, and will be helping my brother to buy our Mom a new roof next year.

@CarrieVS I used to use spray cheese. Sometimes it took two tries to keep her from licking it all off and spitting out the pill.

RE: The minor rants thread.
@Tsaukpaetra Er? It's a program running on your computer, NSSM runs any not-a-service program as a service. It's not a library. The program might still not work if it can't find a desktop, but it might be worth a try.

Subarus are a bit big and expensive.
According to teh googles, a 2010 Impreza sedan is a whole inch longer than a 2010 Corolla. 2.5 cm longer is too big? Maybe it's different over there, but the differnce in price here for 10-year-old base Impreza vs Corolla isn't that much.
-
RE: Aquiring an automobile
@TimeBandit Depends on how cheap you have to go. Looks like according to carfax, a 2008 Impreza is on the order of 10k or less, at least here in the US. They start new just under 19k, just under 26k for the highest-end 4-door (non-WRX)

It normally does so, in the .exe.config file:
There isn't an .exe.config file installed for the service (Yes, that was a real example). I guess, if there isn't, it just sees it's a 4.0 and runs. Until, as you said, it tries to do something that didn't exist.

RE: WTF Bites
@Tsaukpaetra Later runtimes in a major version will support anything compiled against an earlier rev. So 4.8 (which is installed unless you've been fucking up Windows Update) is what you're running on, but targeting 4.7.1 or earlier.
What really fucks you up is when you target a later version and then run on an earlier version. Like compiling for 4.6.2 and then running on 4.6, whereupon you get a crash every time you create an array because Array.Clear() doesn't exist.

RE: In other news today...
@TwelveBaud Some of the recent Logitech ones support both. Look for the ones that support multiple connections. I have an MX Keys and an MX Master3, both of which support 3 connections. I havr 1 and 3 set to the dongles that came with them. 2 is reserved for bluetooth, usually my laptop. 1 is the desktop. 3 is the dongle that's used whenever I need to connect to something else, like the server or a computer I'm repairing or setting up.

@Benjamin-Hall That's a reason to use real mayo instead of salad dressing. "Soybean oil, water, whole eggs and egg yolks, distilled vinegar, salt, sugar, lemon juice concentrate, calcium disodium EDTA, natural flavors." No dairy.
Oh. Fake cheese, not fake mayo. NEVER MIND. Punctuation blurs out if I hold the phone too close, lost the comma. Too much longer and my arms will be too short to see my phone when I have my contacts in.

RE: Common phone number. Somehow.
The Skepticality podcast (back when, you know, they actually did any) used to play messages from there voicemail number of people trying to buy saddles. Apparently, the number was close to one for a saddlery, and people would just ignore the message about the podcast and try to order stuff for their horses.
