Oh, an optimist!
...I'll show myself out.

@cvi said in Administration/Moderation Changes & New Admin Team Nominations:
Honestly, I don't. Sorry, but whenever shit hits the fan around here, you seem to be involved somehow (at least happily fanning the flames). Sure, there's always another guy as well (and they might even have started it after some fashion), but, well, can't help to notice a certain pattern. My €0.50.
No worries. I appreciate the honest feedback.
Also, note that no one nominated me for mod or anything. It was a nomination to help draft rules and guidelines.
-
@ben_lubar, I for one will be sad to see go.
I was already missing your presence here prior to all this, as my perception was that the frequency of your posts in this forum had been dwindling recently.
@ben_lubar said in Administration/Moderation Changes & New Admin Team Nominations:
I do not wish to have my content associated with a website run by someone who would reverse my actions against someone who sent me death threats without asking me a single question, and also claim that my actions caused irreparable harm despite them all being reversed within a period of six minutes.
It is my opinion, based on the information available to me, that you are exaggerating the seriousness of the death threat. If it is just the eugenics thing, it is a tasteless, reprehensible, below-the-belt joke; but nevertheless just a joke, as far as I can tell.
Having said that, I completely understand that it's not easy for you to continue participating in this forum, as some people seem to take great pleasure in antagonizing you to the point of getting on even my nerves.
I hope you've never felt hurt by anything that I've said. Know that any jab that I've might have taken at you has only been meant as playful banter; including the "give or take two weeks" in my previous post. FWIW I do agree it was an honest mistake and I'm not the least mad at you.
I urge you to reconsider and stick around, if only as a lurker, but ultimately it's up to you.
I wish you all the best in any case.
-
@ben_lubar said in Administration/Moderation Changes & New Admin Team Nominations:
no matter how much someone who sent me death threats and indeed has a reference to that in their forum signature claims otherwise.
While we disagree on what "death threat" means, I will explicitly state the original comment and signature were inappropriate.
I won't clarify why it's inappropriate, but I've edited the signature, and will discuss this exact topic, and how to deal with it specifically, and situations like it the future, with the prospective administrators.
Anyone can be nominated or nominate themselves, and I hope you consider nominating yourself. I would like to learn more about how to undo the toxicity, and have a balanced team who can work together despite technology/political/food/whatever disagreements.

@Benjamin-Hall said in Administration/Moderation Changes & New Admin Team Nominations:
This includes flames/attacks on the help threads
Unhelpful jokes, too. I've been called on that a time or two. I even created a thread especially for those OT (but not flamey/hostile; those should be immediately jeffed) comments.

and maybe an admin?
No - I was just bog-standard mod on CS.
When Discourse started, it was me and @dhromed as active admins/mods, but he ended up leaving later on, because he had a life outside of Discourse. Then it was just me. Then I got you involved.
And that 40% minimum for the compose window is annoying...
I don't know what' y'alls talking about. Just make your screens taller!

Yes, this was what I meant in my post in the other topic (I think; I can't remember where I posted stuff (or anything else)) when I said "I don't know what's happened recently", or words to that effect. @ben_lubar was definitely less visible for the last few months, at least, maybe a year? I noticed that, too, enough to break through my usual shell of cluelessness, which means it must have dropped a lot. But it's not my personality to reach out and say, "Hey, haven't heard from you for a while. What's up?", even to dear IRL friends. Wish now that I had.

I can be assertive if necessary. I just feel it hasn't been my role here. It hasn't been my purpose to split up fights.
-
@Gąska said in Administration/Moderation Changes & New Admin Team Nominations:
One thing, though. We're all grown-ups, so let's be honest - the major split in worldviews is between the left and the right. @boomzilla is rather far to the right. To stop people who disagree with @boomzilla from whining all the time, there needs to be at least one strongly left-leaning admin to balance him. Fellow forum members, please keep that in mind when voting.
Yeeeah, almost everyone who was anywhere near "strongly left" departed the site ages ago and the few that actually remain aren't likely going to step up now.

I will say that the worst of the Garage leakage was intentional, and done by people firmly opposed to the garage's very existence. It became difficult to tell whether their opposition was (as they claimed) to the tone or to the fact that people who thought differently were allowed to post on politics.
I would think the opposition to it has mostly been "I don't go there", as it is pretty much hellscape. Of course, you could rightfully counter that the personal conclusion one should draw from this isn't to complain about the garage but "no politics on the forum", as would be the case if the garage you don't want to go to wouldn't exist in the first place.

Jokes against marginalised groups from those in a position of privilege (punching down) need a much higher bar in terms of funniness. This joke was just plain nasty and can easily lead to a feeling of being victimised. Especially given that it was around autism, a condition which makes it harder to tell the difference between jokes and serious statements

I much prefer having a topic for it to the previous method of adding emoji to thread titles

His case would be a lot more sympathetic if it wasn't so full of Humpty-Dumptyisms. He keeps on ranting about "eugenics", "genocide", and "death threats", and then there's zero actual calls for selective breeding of humans, calls for widespread category-based murder of humans, or threatening to kill anyone (joke or otherwise) involved anywhere.
Words have meanings.

The particular people I was thinking about complained that the garage was a toxic hellstew based on content and tone. But then they posted blatant garage bait (both content and tone) outside the garage and threw giant tantrums when their inflammatory posts were (justifiably) moved to the garage. If they wanted "no politics on the forum", they wouldn't be posting politics on the forum. In or out of the garage. My impression (I'm not a mind reader) was that it wasn't the content or tone they really cared about, but the fact that there existed people who disagreed with their beliefs--that the forum wasn't an echo chamber for their side.
I have no problem with people who don't want to read the garage, and then don't post garage bait. That's a totally acceptable (and probably proper) view point--to keep politics, religion, etc. out of the forum. I do have a problem with people who complain about others' behavior and then do the exact same thing and throw a fit when called out on it. Inadvertent garage leakage is one thing (not realizing how it would come across). That's what prompt jeffing is for. And being jeffed into the garage is not a personal attack--it's a recognition of how the material posted has been perceived.
Generally, I just wish people would learn to separate the political/ideological stuff from their own selves. Questioning beliefs or condemning actions is not inherently a personal attack, even if a listener happens to have those beliefs or do those actions.

I'm not defending his actions or the way he went about them, but the post in question was definitely below the belt

We seem to be drifting back to debating policies rather than nominating admins. Alex asked us to keep this thread on-topic until the admin team has been picked, then we can debate the policies we want for the forum. Edit: Or do that now, but in a different thread.

@Benjamin-Hall I'll from now on mute anything which could even be somewhat related to politics. The whole Covid thread (if that still exists), the "In Other News" and so on.
I'm also not surprised in the slightest that some issue or other exploded in this spectacular manner.
That's what I've been saying all along: This forum needs more pro-active moderators (as in: There's a reason why those rods in nuclear reactors are also called thus). Yes, that's work. Moderating always is.
Also, I hope that none of you chuckleheads nominates me.

But it's not truly BSD, is it? Been a while since I checked, but last I remember you can't just
pkg install
shit and expect it to work...
-
@Tsaukpaetra It's BSD at the core, so it has all the standard Unix utilities. But uses its own application format and has no preinstalled package manager. Unless you count the App Store.
