Maryland outlaws ransomware. What could possibly go wrong?

-
in what way does this help
is there a single person who goes "I want to extort people, let me check real quick whether that's legal"
-
"The effective results of ransomware are probably already illegal in at least two ways (misuse of computer, extortion), so let's add a third way!"

It’s much like when I took a plane to the USA in the 1990s: everybody who didn’t have an American passport had to fill out a form that had a number of questions (seven, I think), all of which were variations on “Are you planning on breaking the law during your visit to the USA?” Oh, and it helpfully included a line to explain that answering “yes” to any of the questions could be reason for not admitting you to the country.

In a legal way. Easier for prosecution to build a case.

Same here. Breaking the law alone may or may not be enough to deny future admissions. Breaking the law despite a signed statement that you won't do it, in addition to violating the criminal law also violates the immigration laws, which makes deporting and banning future entries much easier. Bureaucracy for the sake of bureaucracy, but it works.

Nowadays they ask if you've committed genocide (and no, my grandpa didn't fall from the guard tower).
Unfortunately there is no line saying "Don't you think if I did, you'd know?!"

@ben_lubar
No, no, you have it backwards. It's to help encourage people to not click links in e-mail. Because now, in addition to having videos of you touching yourself, the Maryland police will also arrest you for possession of ransomware, unless you pay me 0.1 BTC in the next 4 hours and then I'll give you the key to remove the ransomware from your computer.

Guns are, at the very least, usually sold by a person you have at least some vague idea of the identity of.
Ransomware is something you get from a group of people who are extremely unlikely to live in Maryland.

With guns, it's more like,
I want to shoot up my school...
a (guns are legal). I'll just head to the local gun shop and buy an assault rifle.
b (guns are illegal). but damn, I'm just a high school student that doesn't know any underground arms dealers.
-
@ben_lubar So you're saying that laws against guns work better than this law against ransomware would.
edit: and I tend to agree.

Proving that you know as much about the NRA as you do about guns?
-
@boomzilla Psh, I know all guns have a hammer that goes click when you pull it back, and only need to be reloaded when it serves the plot.
-
Nothing new. There are hundreds of existing state and federal laws written by a technophobic congress over the last 30+ years that are similarly misguided, poorly worded, and missing the mark terribly.
-
@boomzilla might be a language thing, then. When I read it, I understood it as "are you Hitler / Mao / Milošević / Mugabe / ..." etc., not one of their minions. That's why I said they'd know the person (i.e., by name).
But still, I don't think these alleged war criminals would actually admit to being war criminals. I see that the "are you planning to break the law" question would have the effect of making deporting easier when they catch them doing so, as "you lied on the form" is then easily proven. But for these it requires proving that they are in fact war criminals. I don't see where the bureaucratic trick of lying on the form is helping in that case.
After all, the guy got kicked out of UBER, not the US.
-

In Javascript operators and comparisons already work weird enough without that.

A local US Democratic Party politician, Susan Lee of Montgomery County, is the bill's lead sponsor. She told a local news agency: "It's important to establish so criminals know it's a crime,"
It needs to be criminalized so criminals know it's a crime! Because, see, we get all this cybering going on because criminals think themselves good, law-abiding citizens when they ransom people's data, they simply don't know what they're doing is a crime. They just want to be paid in shitcoin because it's a fad, not because they were afraid to send a bill with their account number. Good to finally have someone showing them the light, I'm sure those attacks will be a thing of the past in no time.

Isn't the idea of that that it's easier to deport someone for lying on their form than for actually doing or planning a lot of these things? It's not like they actually expect people to say yes
